This is why many sellers are still trying to use the "friends and family" option withsocial media platforms that don't require direct payments to bank accounts.

it pisses me off to think that a service i use, connected to my bank, thought for even a moment that they could censor my speech and 'fine' me for something they found offensive.

Currently, the IRS will allow you to "gift" up to $16K without being taxed and so many people are trying to use the F&F option to avoid taxes and some trying to steal money through common scams without the risk of chargebacks.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

There is an item in the Market place that I need VERY badly. I sent the payment through PayPal, described the item and I added 4% for the PP fee. but the seller refunded it saying that he will only accept "friends and family" payment through PayPal. I need the item SO bad that I'm willing to take a risk, but is there any reason that could be legit? Thanks for anyones help.
There is no reason for him to not be okay if you cover fees and he does shipping and signature through PayPal. Maybe he is paranoid but you are giving him 90% of the weight by going f&f. If he doesn't have references I would stay away. I did get scammed one time for a couple grand through f&f. I somehow was able to convince a paypal rep to reverse the transaction.
Risk is only worth it if u can afford to loose your money. There is no reason that a seller cant take the $ as business tranaction as the goverent still requires a paypal to 1099 evey transaction over $600 (to each person i think) now.
Internet stalk the guy to see if he is legit?
The reason sellers prefer F&F payment is because ... starting this year, any payment for goods and services (Non F&F) gets summed up in a 1099 sent to the seller and the IRS. Who needs that for some stupid occasional sales of parts. I have even stopped paying for stuff using Paypal because of the exhorbitant fees my bank is now charging for paypal payment. I heard that Venmo and Zelle are much friendlier to both senders and recipients.
i would love to dump PayPal after their little "$2500 for misinformation" fiasco, but there are few alternatives that are accepted as easily. Venmo is owned by PayPal, btw, in case you're trying to leave the PayPal family, like i am.
it pisses me off to think that a service i use, connected to my bank, thought for even a moment that they could censor my speech and 'fine' me for something they found offensive. who the **** are they to decide what i say??
I don't want to reveal the part or the user yet, because I'm not sure it has anything to do with the user here on Rennlist. I think it may be a third party scammer and I don't want to bring any undue light on users here. Anyway. I've Pm'd him and if it is legit, I'll know. I was pretty sure that it was not legit but I was looking for a reason. Yelcab's offered a good reason. We'll see. thank you all for your input.
Legit sellers worry about the risk that they become victim of a scamming buyer who pays incl the fees for goods, receives the goods but subsequently claims with PayPal that these were not as described and requests a refund.
PP often sides with the buyer, so this is a risk for the seller.
PayPal and other sites must report transactions over $600. That doesn't mean you owe money on that transaction. Either the guy is confused or it's a scam.
If i have a concern I ask to speak to the person on the phone, if they refuse that's a flag IMO, if they agree and you just start chatting about your car and there car it will become apparent if you know your subject better than them, kind of test them with out calling them out, soooo " ok so what kind of 996 do you have?" once you get them talking for me it becomes apparent that they are legit, but like i said anyone that doesn't want to talk, maybe i don't need their part that bad, or if its cheap you could take the risk..
IMHO, do NOT buy from any seller that requires a "Friend and Family" PayPal payment. That's the first sign that it could be a fraud. Use "F and F" option from people that you know and trust.
There's a guy on Facebook (William Lelei at

) that is posting high-demand Porsche parts for sale but never sends them out. The tell-tale sign is payment ONLY by "friends and family" in PayPal. After he hits the maximum, he then shuts down the PayPal store and goes onto create a new account probably under pseudo identities.
Now regarding selling online and PayPal... I've been using PayPal since it began and honestly was a great creation that helped provide protection for both the buyer and seller when doing remote transactions. Love it or hate it, it worked. But eventually it's biggest user (i.e. eBay) split off and did their own thing. And, since most of the world has been actively moving to online purchasing of goods (i.e. Amazon), especially during the pandemic, the IRS has been actively working to tie up loose ends and prevent sellers from avoiding to pay income taxes as well as buyers avoiding to pay sales taxes. This is why many sellers are still trying to use the "friends and family" option withsocial media platforms that don't require direct payments to bank accounts. Currently, the IRS will allow you to "gift" up to $16K without being taxed and so many people are trying to use the F&F option to avoid taxes and some trying to steal money through common scams without the risk of chargebacks.
p.s. Venmo is another version of PayPal that was design just for Friends and Family monetary exchange and not commercial transactions.
Confused about how a third party is using someone elses user name to sell something on rennlist?
Or maybe you are referring to Marketplace as some other selling site.
I loathe PayPal and send all funds “friends and family” so they don’t get a bite. If I get screwed at some point, so be it. So far the only time I’ve been screwed is before I started doing friends and family. I bought a used turbo that turned out to be junk. Disputed it, lost. Fxxx you, PayPal.
