Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

All,
i removed the oil cap on my 2004 996 C2 this morning and not long after putting it back on, the engine started running extremely rough and then threw an engine light. Almost like the car was missing but running real rough. if i give it some throttle, up to 3k or so and hold it...the engine sounds great, and the engine light goes out, but as soon as it goes back to idle...rough running and the check engine light comes back.
any ideas? im wondering if i somehow introduced an air leak? any ideas?
Make sure the cap is on tightly and correctly, but it sounds like you may have broken the oil filler pipe. Check it carefully for cracks. Mostly happens where the straight part of the pipe meets the corrugated part.
I purchased this:
3:1 Heat Shrink Tubing Adhesive-Lined Heat Shrinkable Tube Waterproof Insulation Sealing DIY (Dia 1/2” (12.7mm)) (Dia 2"(50mm)) : Amazon.ca: Industrial & Scientific

In case I crack the pipe, I can use this until I replace the oil filler pipe. I'm thinking I might do it pre-emptively to avoid future cracks.
What Joe said.
Ive read on here numerous times where someone barely touched that filler tube and it broke. Its old, brittle plastic thats under reverse pressure, and constant heat/cooling cycles. And a leak can be hard to spot.
the cap was on extremely tight when i removed it and when i put it back on the filler neck seemed to rotate about 5 degrees...it was covered with intake stuff and i was short on time. ill be getting one on order ASAP
I broke mine while replacing my AOS.
I replaced it with the new "updated" 997 part.
I fixed mine with heat shrink, and then gave it as a temporary fix to someone who broke theirs.
They were going to give me their old one to fix but theirs could not be repaired.
When they bought a new tube, they threw away my old repaired one.
I have plenty of heat shrink, so I'll eventually repair another one for temporary use.
It sounds like the temporary fix may be better than the original part, with less chance of failing/cracking in the future. Its sort of like the BASF we dont make things we make them better concept
