Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I used GPL205 on every rubber surface I could reach.
Leading evidence: 'Use gpl205' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Run around the perimeter of the targa glass' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I used Super Lube on the slide surfaces and pivots.

There is a rubber seal running around the perimeter of the targa glass.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Researching here and elsewhere brought up quite a few threads on dashboard and windshield creaks so I focused on those, but nothing fixed my issue.
I have been chasing creaking noises in my 996 targa for the past several weeks. The source of the noises was very difficult to pin down due to sonic reflections off the windshield. Researching here and elsewhere brought up quite a few threads on dashboard and windshield creaks so I focused on those, but nothing fixed my issue. Finally I simply opened the targa roof slightly -- PRESTO. No more creaking noises. So that is the first piece of advice to any would-be creak hunters. Open the targa top and see if the noise goes away. What follows is my solution; please by all means feel free to add your own insights.
These are the products I used.
Super Lube spray lubricant. PTFE, starts out liquid but dries to a light grease
Kyrtox GPL205, which is expensive but a little bit goes a very long way. I put a dot on my fingertip and wiped it on my desired location, spreading it as thin as I could. It only takes a thin coat to be effective.
These are the lubes I used
Make sure you get GPL205
I used GPL205 on every rubber surface I could reach. I used Super Lube on the slide surfaces and pivots.
There is weatherstripping on the roof surrounding the glass targa section. I used GPL205 on the underside of that weatherstripping.
Lube the underside of this rubber strip with GPL205
Press the air deflector down to gain access to the underside of the front seal
There is a rubber seal running around the perimeter of the targa glass. I used GPL205 on every part I could reach. There is also a rubber seal along the back edge of the roof, where the targa glass meets the roof. GPL205 on that.
GPL205 on the rubber seal attached to the roof at the back of the targa opening
GPL205 on the rubber seal along the front edge of the targa glass
I used Super Lube on the slides and grooves, and the pivots of the wind deflector mechanism. I put some GPL205 in the top points of the side grooves, where the slides will rest when the top is fully closed. I also applied GPL205 to the metal surfaces on the sides, where the targa glass rubber seal mates to the roof when the glass is closed. I did this because I could not reach the rubber seal itself all the way around the glass.
The white stuff you see in my pictures is residue from spray-on "white grease" that had been used at some point in the past. Awful stuff.
Red = GPL205, Yellow = SuperLube
The result of all of this is an utterly quiet and creak-free targa roof. For me it's been a revelation. I've had this car for over a year and always ascribed the occasional creak to the fact that it's 20 years old with 110K miles under its wheels. It was only when the creaks became unbearable that I finally took action. The creaks are gone! I can enjoy my car again. Good luck in your hunt and I hope this information is helpful.
Glad you got it all figured out. I don't have a targa, but thanks for sharing the info on that lube. I'll have to keep it in mind when I get around to messing with my sunroof and exploring a few creaks on my own. I also never thought to use super lube on the sliders. I'm sure it works better than the white stuff though. I've been using super lube for years, but mostly for O-rings on injectors and such. It's a great product.
