Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I just test drove a late 99 996 C2 with 60k miles / 100k km on original clutch. No slipping and engagment pt was near middle (not at top). But the clutch felt heavy compared to my 944 (which afterwards felt so easy to shift).
Searching the archive, it seems the early 996 clutch is in fact a bit heavy. So is this the normal feel of a 996 clutch?
Can anyone who have driven both the 996 and 944 chime in to tell me if this is normal or is on its way out (which I won't be totally surprise considering the mileage).
Thx!
In stock form, the clutch effort on my 996 was much lighter than the effort on my 944 turbo. So much lighter that there was practically no feel at all. Check to see if the assist spring has been removed or replaced. If not, look for clutch problems.
Have had the 951 and via other rides now have a 996. I rode the 996 thru hard pedal then harder pedal then rock hard pedal to failure instantly.
The message here is that the clutch is failing - no question. It will seem OK but then you might get a slight chatter - mine first showed up in reverse - then suddenly it will slip and in a matter of moments it will slip so bad you will barely be able to get it to the dealer for replacement.
However, don't be frightened the job is only about $1300. I bought my car with the clutch going (knew from the feel) at a low price because of this problem. An EZ fix.

That's what Im thinking. It seems "ok" for now, but I will be due for a clutch any time after my purchase. So I have to factor a new clutch (or + flywheel) to my offer.
It gets heavier the more it gets worn.
I had the my clutch replaced at around 100k, and it feels really light now - like a toyota or something. Didn't realize it was getting so heavy until I felt it after replacement.
When my old clutch was wearing out, it would slip sometimes under full-throttle in 2nd gear.
had one done about 6 mos ago
I don't know if they can resurface the dual mass flywheel though
I had the rear main seal and and oil / water heat exchanger seals replaced too and all in was just over 2K

I thought my C4S had a heavy clutch at first. 3 years and thousands of miles later, it’s fine. One of my GTIs had a clutch so heavy, felt like it needed two feet! Compared to that, C4S is easy!

The new post that revived the thread was about a clutch replacement! (And probably should have been in a different thread.)
I just had my clutch done (in addition to flywheel and RMS), dealer wanted a ridiculous $6.3k. Got everything done at an independent shop for about $3.4k.
