However back to your original question, there are quite a few people who have installed a momo wheel:
Leading evidence: 'Install momo wheel' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'lot more expensive than getting someone' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Install momo wheel' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I installed O2 spacers (not included) for the post-cat O2 sensors to avoid a CEL.

This guy installed a similar steering wheel in his 996.

This wheel was redone in France and was probably a lot more expensive than getting someone to simply redo a wheel here in North America.

I also have pse and wonder if xpipe would significantly change the tone of the exhaust.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello!
I am on a modding streak and contemplating getting a Momo steering wheel for my 996 c4s.
Anyone installed one? What is this washer that is needed with the wheel hub?
Thanks!
leon
Is this for track or street use? What about your airbag?
FYI if it doesn't have an airbag you need to wire in a resister to make the car think its still there.
Whilst I agree its a great looking sports wheel, for street use i'd be keeping my standard wheel with the airbag.
That's my opinion but its your car!
I'd be in favour of other mods like a 997 shifter if your car is manual or even some bolt on performance mods!
However back to your original question, there are quite a few people who have installed a momo wheel:

Those links refer to GT2s and GT3s but they will give you a rough idea
yes I agree the airbag is important to me so I may not go with the Momo.
what i would like is to go with an xpipe cat bypass but I hear it is rather difficult to get the stock cats off. I also have pse and wonder if xpipe would significantly change the tone of the exhaust. Hmmmm
The actual work of removing them and installing new cats shouldn't be overly difficult provided the bolts are in good condition. Having said that I haven't done it myself but im planning to. There are pleanty of people on here who have done it.
Removing the bolts on the headers seems to be the most difficult as the bolts can snap quite easily.
Going catless increases volume significantly from what I've read.
Catless is amazing. I love mine so much. It is very loud, but over 3.5-4k there is more power, the car is lighter and omg the sound the glorious sound.
Airbags are overrated
I dig the wheel that Sylvain has in that youtube video above. Taking out a side airbag would scare me but removing the front is less scary for some reason. To be fair, maybe this inclination will be weeded out of the gene pool at some point.
Carnewal has some pretty cool aftermarket steering wheels - with airbags! The prices are much more reasonable than Porsche offereings as well...

I actually had Machine Revival make me this steering wheel with my desired colours. It will be going in my car in the next month or so with some other things I purchased over the dreaded winter.
I put a Momo Mod7 in my 996. The washer is simply there because the adapter is a bit short. The threads from the steering shaft do no go all the way down the base. The washer just allows you to tighten the nut down all the way. There's nothing special about it. It's just there as a spacer.
I also put a Catless XPipe in my car. It sounds AWESOME. Even with a full Fabspeed system it was a bit too quiet for me. Now with the catless xpipe from Speedtech (much cheaper than Fabspeed and still top notch quality) it sounds like a race car above 3500 RPM. I love it! Speedtech's xpipe also came with all new hardware for the install. That was nice. I installed O2 spacers (not included) for the post-cat O2 sensors to avoid a CEL. I've had none so far and it's been 6 months of daily driving, spirited drives, and triple digits.
Here's the thread on that.
I honestly could not give you a very good estimate. This wheel was redone in France and was probably a lot more expensive than getting someone to simply redo a wheel here in North America. This wheel refinished in suede was a little over $600 CAD. I know you can find Momo wheels for a better price, but the OEM porsche wheels in alcantara are very expensive. Machine Revival was great to work with and their finished product (the picture shows it still in progress at the time) is absolutely beautiful. I will make sure to post pictures as soon as it is installed.
I bought my hub used and it did not come with the washer. I just took the steering nut to Home Depot and bought a couple of washers the right size. I only ended up using one.
No issue, but u need to put a resistor in the airbag plug. NRG makes one predone with a fuse. It comes included with their hub. Also there hub is much nicer because u retain the factory clockspring.
+1 on the NRG QR hub. High quality billet, comes with a resistor but no instructions. Only videos were for Momo hub--for which you sacrifice the clockspring and hack into the pin 71. NRG much better. The Mod 07 has a deeper dish and gives you 1.75" more reach than the Prototipo.
Im not in love with the dish on the omp i bought. Im gonna try it out but may be swapping it out. I do have the nrg disco too so that extends the wheel even further.
This was the short hub. It says boxter vut uts 996 too.

I had a Mod 07 for a short while in my 996. Didnt like it. The yellow stripe was slightly off center and it didnt feel as robust as I was expecting for a Momo wheel. Could just be me, though.
It's definitely worthwhile establishing whether you have/had a genuine Momo wheel. A recent conversation with a Momo dealer proved rather illuminating, there are a lot of Momo knockoffs being made in you know where.
Apparently they're an excellent replica, but .... one way you can tell they're not the genuine article, is the spokes are flimsy and will flex. I have genuine Cup wheel in front of me, its spokes have zero flex.
I thought I wanted to add a Momo wheel to my 996, but when I looked at it in person at Wine Country's store in WPB, I opted against it simply as a matter of personal preference.
Just in case you didn't know.
Porsche now sell the Porsche branded one in leather.
In the UK it is 270 plus tax.
