Bet the majority of those who went with the orange cap mod......are the same guys back in the day that installed playing cards on their bicycle spokes.
Leading evidence: 'Install playing cards' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean mass air flow sensor' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I changed from stock to BB exhaust and that was by far the best and fairly easy reversible improvement for regular driving.

Raby’s word, but as per thurstonpowers3 post, that you quote; Mr Raby has tested too many airflow combos to not know.

I used the cap from a quart bottle of Castrol Edge oil.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have a 01 996.1 and I wanna have it sound more throatier. I am thinking about putting a BMC drop in . Or possibly a EVOMS v flow. Does anyone have either one of these and could give me little advice on to if they made the car sound more throatier. The morning gargle is what I am looking for .
My car came with a K&N intake kit on it. I just removed it and replaced it with stock. It sounded very nice and throaty, but I kept getting MAF codes and was tired of cleaning it. Not sure about a drop in BMC, but I don't think I want an oiled air filter in my 996 again.
Well, you could do the red cap mod, or whatever its called on the intake. You replace the resonator by removing it and replacing the hole it leaves with a plug or cap. And then you add a silicon intake tube. That will give you a throatier sound at WOT in the inside of your car. Sounds pretty good, although not as good as a similar mod on the Boxster or Cayman because the engine is closer to you in that car.
The Gundo or Fister hack is for the exhaust and is even more of a pronounced sound, both inside and outside the car. Its much louder outside, but only when you really open her up.
I have both on my 996. Both retain the stock components and are generally reversible.

Im not quite old enough to have performed the playing cards trick on my bike, but I did install lights on the inside of the wheels on both my kids bikes, so Im sure I qualify, l!
That's just a low blow man...., come on..., we're better than that...,
You drove over an empty cola can with the rear tire and it'd seat perfectly for that throaty V1 grumble.
I'm insulted...and yes I did both.
. But baseball cards not playing cards.
I used the cap from a quart bottle of Castrol Edge oil. It fits perfectly. See Post #3

I second going straight to the Fister/Gundo. I just did it, and am shocked by the transformation. It is way better than the sound in the videos can reflect! It'll be cheaper than at least one airbox option you mention (maybe as cheap as 1/3 the price if you can pull the mufflers yourself) and make 10x the difference. More "gargle," no additional hiss/suck/intake noise (which isn't for everybody), and not obnoxious at all.
Paul
I have Fisters and agree that it's the best mod you can do. The airbox trick gives a little more of a throaty sound above 4k ,but the change with this is subtle, On the other hand, the Fisters are amazing.
The Hemholtz delete is a great mod to accompany the Fister or Gundo exhaust. It definitely adds a noticeable throatiness to the mid range that is very enjoyable on longer gear pulls. Add it's extremely inexpensive. As far as intake mods go Raby says the 997 airbox is the best performing one they have come across in their testing.

What are the beneifits of replacing the 996 airbox with the 997's? Other than
aesthetics and possibly induction sounds.
Performance increase due to airflow, although not a big one, has been reported by Mr Raby. Sure, anecdotal evidence because it’s
just
Raby’s word, but as per thurstonpowers3 post, that you quote; Mr Raby has tested too many airflow combos to not know. And he does say that the 997 airbox is a better performer, several times and places. If you want specific data, I’m sure you can open a ticket with FSI and ask for the proprietary test results. And best of luck with that.
What's your end goal? People say 997 airbox and to me it's only an aesthetic feature. Did orange cap mod and can't say notice a difference, but it cost zero otherwise wouldn't have done it. I changed from stock to BB exhaust and that was by far the best and fairly easy reversible improvement for regular driving.
Depends on what you want and your expectations.
I have heard the Fister/Gundo hack mod on Mike Murphy's car and it sounds incredible. I am running FVD 200 cell cats and sport mufflers so I get plenty of sound.
I have what I think is the Flat 6 cold air intake elbow kit, but I put it on with the IPD competition plenum and GT3 throttle body a number of years ago. The combination creates an incredible intake (sucking) sound. Doubt it would add much sound without the plenum/throttlebody combo. Also really didn't add any performance gains. However it did change my powerband a bit, taking away low rpm per and adding it to the midrange and upper range.
While I have read about and looked at the 997 airbox, I haven't added it. Don't know if it adds any improvement in air flow, but it does certainly looks better. Every time I think about spending 400 on a used airbox on eBay, I decide to spend the 400 on something else on the car. As an example, I just decided on titanium wheel studs instead since I went from 7 mm spacers to 15 mm.
Hope that helps.
Just more glorious noises
This winter the plan is exhaust and a deep sump along with a new shift ****. The IPD and throttle body are on the roadmap along along with the Numeric SSK and cables. @GC996 hopefully I'll meet you and Mike at some of the events next year, you guys have been a wealth of knowledge as I'm figuring out this build.
Sounds like you are in the Chicago region. Love to get together with you. Plenty of non-track events this off-season as well as track events coming up this spring. PM me with your contact info when you get the chance and we can connect. Chicago region is loaded with good events and good people.
The Fister mod can be done for as little as $715 skipping the ceramic coating and other extras. New bolts, etc. are another $50 from Fister. First mod to do.
Or as little as $100 - $200 if you just have your local muffler shop do it. I was quoted $120.00 back in 2018 by a local shop that had already done a few but I ended up going with B&B.
This. I don't think the ceramic paint does that much outside of race or very tight tolerance application. I painted mine with heat resistant paint for some "protection" and cause they look nice in flat black
