Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
47 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

2 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

Worst case, you may have to get it worked on, but it's a better option than your current wheel.
Hit a huge pothole while I was out Sunday and now my left front wheel is bent, not terribly, but the vibration is not so good. I will be filing a claim with USAA.
Options:
1. Live with the vibration - don't think so
2. Repair the bend - this wheel has already been repaired twice before, I don't think it can handle another repair
3. Buy one exact used wheel - no guarantee it's not bent either
4. Buy one new wheel from Porsche, $1,136.32, and it's on back order, no idea when available.
5. Buy four new aftermarket wheels, $????
Question: Are there any aftermarket 18" wheels that don't add any weight but don't bend so easily? This is the fourth incident in three years where I have a bent wheel for one reason or another.
They are 18" Carrera II wheels from the factory on a 03 C2.
Thoughts...suggestions...humor?
I cant say for certain but I believe the OEM wheels are cast or similar technology. I have a set of OZs which are a flow formed and super light but arent as robust. Forged monoblocks start as a block of metal and then are milled(CNCd). Forged wheels are generally stronger. CCW is a brand that came to mind but BBS, Volk and higher end wheels have forged options.
Ebay may be your best bet for 1 wheel. Worst case, you may have to get it worked on, but it's a better option than your current wheel. Many folks have two sets of wheels which gives them an option to switch wheels "just in case" as well as run two sets of tires. Never an easy decision.
Once you figure out what to do for a wheel, you can try running a higher profile tire. May help to absorb the shock a bit better. Many guys are running 35 instead of 30 in the back. Don't know what has been attempted in the front with 18s.
Ive been to Wheel Collision Center more than Id like.
Had a few repairs done there and also had them source a wheel after a large pothole made it unrepairable.
I was really happy with their work and would definitely recommend them.
I try, but it's my daily driver and they seem to be forever working on the roads around here. That huge pothole was at the transition between old pavement and a "new lane" for a temporary deviation in the route. I told TXDOT and they fixed it within 2 days! Not soon enough for me...
Thanks for the links! I will probably get a wheel from one of those guys.
What you should care about is weight....more weight - so that it's a stronger wheel. You will be hitting more potholes no matter how hard you try not to. You are not standing behind the car pushing it, so what do you give a crap if the wheels are a bit heavier? They will roll just the same.
My understanding about weight on the wheel/tire combo is that the heavier, the harder it is to turn, and the less responsive to small bumps in the road.
I'm going to be looking for stronger, lighter wheels first, then if too expensive I'll probably just get another 18" Carrera II wheel. Still researching...
This is the very reason I removed my mint sport classic rims and purchased a moderately priced aftermarket wheel .... If I bend one of my rims no big deal I just buy another for $500 and my oem rims stay nice and mint.
FWIW take a look at APEX SM10, which is similar in look. You can choose how convex you want them as well as they are beaded which may help with tire slippage and the need for balancing. Especially important on the track.
I'm obviously biased because I own a set but for similar price check out the SM-10 from Apex Racing. Very solid wheels that are on par weight wise with your stock wheels. The best part is that if you damage the wheel again you can get a new one for half price.
Don't know anything about USAA or Texas insurance regulations, but before filing a claim you might want to find out if there are potential consequences to your premiums vs. cost of out of pocket replacement. GLWS
Apex is doing a group by for their new lightweight forged wheels in various Porsche fitments. I'm in for a set of 18x9 and 18x12 in WB fitments, if they add those sizes to the design I want.

I'll look into the APEX SM10's. At the price of a new wheel the Alleggerita HLT is looking pretty good, but keep the suggestions coming! I'd like a "strong" wheel if possible. I looked into monoblock, but at $900 a wheel, I'll pass.
TXDOT came through and opened an incident with Zachry, the company responsible for the pothole. First I'll see if I can get reimbursed from then. USAA is always in the hip pocket if needed.
The 18" Carrera II wheels are cast.
Not repairing will lead to a crack and losing tyre pressure eventually (and at the worst possible occasion..)
TBH I doubt that the aforementioned wheels that are all optimized regarding weight are more robust than your original wheel as OEMs have internal standards also wrt impact loading that generally surpass the requirements that an aftermarket wheel has to fulfil in order to be allowed for use on a public road (in Europe).
I get what you're saying, but here's a thought. Back in 2003 when the specs on these wheels were decided on by Porsche they didn't have the metallurgy/manufacturing techniques we do today. So maybe the newer wheels are lighter and stronger? Something to ponder...
I do have to say the Carerra 5 spokes are not only light but very strong. You must have hit a huge pothole. Over 19 years I never had a problem with them. One time I did hit a pothole and popped the tire on an extremely cold day. But not one bit of damage to the front rim. I figured it was toast. So unless you are looking for a new look, eBay always has single wheels for reasonable prices and you can replace your banged up rim. Your local Porsche shop will know where to go if you need to repaint and straighten an eBay rim in case it's needed. Good luck with whatever you choose to do.
Running the OZ setup here. 225/40/18 front, and 295/30/18 rears on pss10s. So far I’ve had good luck with them, driven on some harsh roads, no potholes however. Figure if I ever bend one, I’ll order a new one, or I’d consider APEX wheels also. Both offer a very nice look on our cars and cost is very reasonable.
I have these as well, they are very strong and light, but are not immune to being bent as well. Road wins every time.
Insurance might help but it still sucks, especially if Tire gets damaged as well.
Try to find used one, most reputable places will guarantee straightness.
I decided to go with one refurbished wheel,

Should be here the week after Thanksgiving, I'll post pics, results.
Thanks for all the help!
Until I read this post, I didn't realize which wheels you had. Good choice to replace the bent wheel. Yours are, IMHO, the best looking wheel Porsche has done since the Fuch.
For daily street driving, a slightly heavier wheel/tire combo will survive better on rough roads and won't make a noticeable difference on turning and responsiveness. You are driving public streets, not the Daytona 500.
I don't track the car but I'm one of the Tourmasters for Longhorn Region and I do drive very briskly out in the middle of nowhere, so I do want to have the benefit of a not to heavy wheel.
Mine are dirty and full of left over residue from previous balance jobs. I can see the value of just putting it in a box and getting a new (to me) one in return.
That is highly unlikely, that wheel bends alot & it takes a high speed hit to crack it. Normally it just bends & there are shops that can straighten the bend. I have been running these wheels since 2003 & never had to replace one. That doesn't mean I don't have spares .
they are light and look good but these bend super easy, I have had to had two of them trued after hitting potholes. They are simply not durable. The heavier cast BBS factory wheels are definitely more durable.
