Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

The rocker switch is still not operating the top although I can open and close the top using the key from outside.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

Outcome without a verified action link

The rocker switch is still not operating the top although I can open and close the top using the key from outside.

No unique explicit quoted action; no causal link assigned

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hopefully I haven't submitted this twice, the system logged me out when I tried the first time. I have a 1999 996 and the convertible top rocker switch is not working; I pulled the 7.5 amp fuse (5b) and it looked good to me, but I replaced it just in case. The rocker switch is still not operating the top although I can open and close the top using the key from outside. I just got the car back from the mechanic who did some maintenance work on the top (among other things), so I'm thinking he forgot to connect something, somewhere. It's an hour round-trip to take it back to him, so I'd like to fix this myself if possible. I've done engine work on the car before but nothing with the convertible top mechanism, and am pretty clueless about its operation. Does anybody know where I should begin looking and what I should be looking for? Remember I know nothing about this top, so very specific instructions would be much appreciated. Many thanks!

POST 2Original post

Make sure the rear engine deck lid is closed and the handbrake is engaged. Could be many different microswitches that prevent the top from operating, but those are the first things to check.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks, I did some research over the weekend and I think it's the microswitch associated with the hand brake; the dash light is not illuminating when it's engaged. I just ordered the part and it should be here by the weekend, so we'll see if that does the trick.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I did find this connection near the convertible top mechanism on the driver's side that wasn't plugged in. I looked all over the place but didn't see a place to plug it; any idea what it controls and where it's connected?
