Hi All, My car is a 1998 c2 3.4 tip tronic, I had not driven this car when I bought it as it had been standing for a few years, It had a fuel leek from the fuel rail now fixed and no brakes, so it could not be driven, I have had the engine and box out and replaced all the brake pipes.

replaced loads of bits on the engine, re sprayed Ocean Blue, engine and box back in and running, all the lights back on, Problem I have is when selecting Drive and reverse I am getting a clonk, putting it up on the ramp it looks to me as there is a lot of play in the near side drive shaft at the wheel hub end, I think I am going to have to remove the drive shaft for further investigation, I am quite sure that this is where the problem is , not engine mounts, or gearbox mounts.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Any advise on how to get the drive shaft out, This car is very difficult to remove anything, nearly every bolt wants to snap off every time I try to do anything. Not looking forward to the task, but it has to be done. Any help or advice would be very much appreciated. Paul

POST 2Original post

The drive shafts are pretty simple. IIRC there are 8 - 8mm hex (Allen) bolts on the transaxle end and a 32mm nut on the wheel end. If theyre rusted soak them good with your favorite penetrating oil/mixture (many here like acetone/trans fluid) Ive had good luck with PB Blaster on most things... If you use a long extension(s) you may be able to get on those inner bolts with an impact gun - which may help crack them loose if theyre frozen... good luck

POST 4Original post

What? Post this car on ebay and get rid of it. Obviously this car is a disaster from the get go, and you will never enjoy it. Get rid of it. That is my "advise"

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi had a good look at this car today and the drive shaft is ok, The problem I am having is when selecting reverse i get a clonk /thump, if i go back to park and then back to reverse it is not bad, but if I go to drive from reverse it is a big clonk/thump , it is like it is taking up backlash somewhere. It is quite bad sometimes, would it do it if it was low on oil?. I am thinking of changing the oil and filter and see what happens, I read the transmition with my autell and got codes 000052 Please refer to vehicle service manual 000018 Please refer to vehicle service manual 000050 Please refer to vehicle service manual 000010 Please refer to vehicle service manual I dont know why I am getting these sort of codes and P codes if I clear the faults these 3 come back without even starting the car 000052 000018 0000C6 Can anyone give me some help please Paul

POST 6Original post

The clunk is probably the CV joints (there's one on each end of the drive shaft(s) )... They're both technically re-buildable but the outer one is sort of a pain - if you don't have experience with this type of work just buy a new axle (which comes with the CV joints)... You can buy new or used in good shape... for example https://www.pelicanparts.com/More_In...%20Catch%20All Or https://www.ebay.com/itm/17386499885...93df29adfcde0e

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi Dporto, Thanks for the reply but I think it is a lot more that a CV joint. I cant find any play in the drive shaft whatsoever . Paul

POST 8Original post

Did you check it with the wheels off the ground? If it's not the CV joints then it would be inside the transaxle... bummer!

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yes and up on the ramp, when you are on the ground, it seems to take a couple of seconds, a sort of delay, I have had the engine and box out, I did not split box from the engine, I am wondering if I have left anything disconnected , But I don't know what would cause that problem. Paul
