Leading evidence: 'Replace stock 265 size' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace diameter of your front tires at the same time' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. I'm running 285/30 19's on the rear of my car with H&R Lowering springs.

I run the factory sized tires on my C4 and have zero complaints.

I'm curious are you changing the diameter of your front tires at the same time to maintain the ratio between front and back?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all,
First let me say what an great place this is for a newbie like me to learn! Brilliant!
My question is about tires. Mine are just about dead and I will need new one. I have a 2003 Carrera 2 Cab with 18" stock wheels. Fronts seem to be relatively easy to source, but there are limited selection in rears. Mine are 285/30-18. I seem to see that early 3.4 996s used 265/30-18? Why the big change over the years?
I have an opportunity to get a great deal on a set of Falken fk453s, but can only get 275/35-18 rears. I have looked at the online tire calculators and realize these are slightly taller than stock but will these work properly?
For the record, this is my first Porsche. I use it as a daily driver in the summer months. With my work and a sportswear crazy son (always wanting to go for drives...bless that boy!), I put a few miles on. Something like 10,000 kms in the last 2.5 months, and have no plans to track the car other than maybe a track day to get a better understanding of the limits.
I did do a search but with limited success. What is the collective wisdom on a) going to a 275/35-18 and b) on Falken fk453s? Also any other suggestions welcome. I also have readily available Continentals, but about 30% more $$
My 996 originally came with 265/35-18 on the factory Sport Design 18" rear wheels.
They looked a little on the narrow size for the wheel width, the rims were exposed and indeed mine came with some significant rash on the rears. When I bought new I switched to 285/30-18.
265/30-18 sounds unlikely for a factory size. Here's the official factory docs.

I run the factory sized tires on my C4 and have zero complaints. Just about EVERY other car I own has gone plus 1 at least. no need on this Porsche. Just sayin.
Sorry, my mistake on the 265 profile. My question was more around why did they increase the width? 265 too narrow? Maybe the exposed rim and rash explains it.
I read where track guys will occasionally run 265 (narrower) with stock sized fronts to lessen understeer, or run wider fronts.
If yours is a C4, running a taller tire on one axle and the correct height tire on the other may not be the best thing for the viscous coupling...
*edit* Never mind, I'm an idiot, your original post says C2.
You'll be fine with 275's on the rear. The 18" option on the Gen II came with wider rims and 285 on the rear. Most people generally prefer the look of the wider tires but I have seen 265 on some cars and my 996 had 265's when I got it (which I quickly wore out on the track and switched to 285 Yokohama AD08R's).
My '04 C2 cab currently has 265/35-18s on the rear and on Friday AM will get a set of new Michelins at 285/35-18. As a byproduct, the speedo should be almost accurate with the larger tire.
The 275s should be just fine for you.
I'm curious are you changing the diameter of your front tires at the same time to maintain the ratio between front and back?
The reason I ask is that I seem to regularly see threads on various forums from people claiming to be having problems with ABS and PSM as a direct result of venturing significantly from the factory ratio.
It does make sense that these particular systems would look at the difference in angular speed of the different wheels to work out if they need to intervene. Note I have *NO* personal experience with this, nor am I saying it won't work out, just a topic that crops up every so often, and I'm curious how much flexibility in deviating from the factory numbers before things go south.
For this:
I'm curious how much flexibility in deviating from the factory numbers before things go south
my thinking is one can take the factory sanctioned wheel/tire sizes and work out the range of tire diameters when both front and rear tires are new and when the fronts are new and the rears worn to the wear bars and at the other extreme the fronts are worn to the wear bars and the rears are new.
You should end up with a "box" into which the stock factory sanctioned tires fit into regarding diameter deviation.
Then you can take the set of tires you are considering and work the numbers to see if the numbers fall inside the box you have created. If they do the chances are good the tire combination will work at least not cause any issues with the PSM or ABS systems.
Maybe.
A complication is if the tires are not N-rated the actual diameter might be different enough under usage -- due to sidewall compression from the considerable weight the rear tires have to carry -- that the diameter of the tires may be less and less enough to cause problems.
IOWs, while the static numbers might indicate the non-factory sanctioned tires will work -- at least peacefully coexist with the PSM and ABS systems -- the real numbers the tires produce with the car on the road might cause problems.
I just put the Falkens Azenis FK453 on my 996TT and have been quote impressed so far. Much quieter than the Hankook Ventus. A bit greasy at first, but have settled quite nicely. Sidewall are a bit soft making a more complaint ride and slightly less crisp handling.
We will see how they wear.
