Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So what's the craziest thing you've heard about your 996 or any other car?
I know similar posts have been made but oh well.
Today at Mobil, paying inside, "what kind of car is that! ? " a 911, "oh cool, is it fast"...It's quick enough, I wouldn't say fast though. "What's in it", what do you mean? "Well my charger is a 3.6, how about yours"...oh Mines a 3.4l..."oh my charger is faster? " Idk could be. "Why does it sound so good? " thanks, I'm running an aftermarket header system, cat and muffler bypass pips. "Could it beat my charger"...around bends probably, Idk about on a drag strip (trying not to sound like a snob or tool), with out the cats I lost low end torque.
Lol nice guy, but it amazes me how some people have no clue how cars in general work. Thinking displacement is a direct indicator of speed
I was waiting for my wife at the airport a few years ago. I was parked curbside, in the passenger pickup lane with the trunk open. I saw a police officer approaching and I asked him if I needed to move the car. He said that I didn't, but that he had always heard that Porsches had the engine in the back and he wanted to see for himself!
The one I get is, "It's got back seats? How did you fit a car seat in there?!?"
Speaking of people relishing in the thought of a broken Porsche, I was in Nashville last month and a new Turbo S had parked in a spot where the meter ran out. He was getting ticketed and during that time people had their cellphone cameras out and were laughing and making jokes about how he deserves it. I guess you get no sympathy as a P-car owner eh?
99% of people have no clue what Porsche is and where the engine is. Car enthusiasts are a pretty small group, most people don't care a bit about 911 having a flat 6 or engine being in the ***. I expect people to largely be unaware of specifics of any given vehicle.
Analogy here would be sailing or HAM radio operation. I would guess that number of car enthusiasts is about the same as number of sailing enthusiasts or HAM operators. I wouldn't know a thing about a sail boat or the type of ropes or how the hull is made or what type of sails it uses.
My dad, while I put in some stuff in the frunk, says: "Where is the engine?"
I picked up a friend from airport recently, came to my house for a bit before dropping her off at her parents' house, between loading at airport, her taking a little present out for me when arrived at my house, then arriving at her parent's place, she went to the back of the car each and every time.
She looked at me with the "I must have been stupid" look when she went to the back of the car a her parent's place, and just said: "Don't you say a word!"
Granted it was a red-eye flight she was on.
No real comments, other than people seem to like it and don't realize that it's 15 years old.
Last night I got a kick out of going to this local place -
www.caferacermn.com
- with TAXFREE last night. A person working there, who is a great car and bike guy, commented on the car and he and I talked. Followed by him commenting on a red 993 in the area, the owner of which I just had a happy hour with. And then I said my friend was stopping by with his 996.
Kind of like a mini Porsche flash mob.
=)
I was out on a first date earlier this year and as I opened the door for the woman, I noticed she paused briefly to try and decipher the Carrera script on the sill. When I sat down next to her, she turned to me with a big smile and said "Nice Camaro!".
Other gas station comments/questions that I have gotten include:
"How fast have you been in that thing?"
"What's the top speed of that car?"
"Is that a 944?" (yes, I really got that question while filling my 996 C4S with gas)
"What kind of car is that?"
"What do you call that color?"
I really haven't had any unusual questions. I always enjoy talking to people about cars.
Came out of Trader Joes with my wife, my 2 boys, and a cart full of groceries. Opened the frunk and loaded it up. Got the kids in and before I got in, I saw this old timer staring in amazement. As soon as our eyes met he goes: "What in the hell? How did you fit all that in that thing?"
Another one:
"Is that a 2012?"
"No, it's an '02."
"Damn!"
I've had plenty of people compliment the car and ask me routine questions about it (e.g., what year, how many miles, how do I like it, etc.) but recently a guy in a new-ish Audi A8 pulled up along side of me at a stoplight and we exchanged the following comments:
Him: Beautiful car.
Me: Thank you.
The light turned green and we both moved forward to the next block. He then pulled up again and continued.
Him: That's a Carrera 4S? My son lives in Colorado. He just bought one, too.
Me: Yes, it's a great car. I really appreciate the AWD capability plus I've always loved the wide body. How does your son like his?
Him: He loves it. It's a beautiful car. Enjoy it.
Me: Thanks again.
The light turned green and we both moved forward to the next block again. He pulled up closely but this time spent some time staring at the back of the car before pulling up alongside of me again. He continued...
Him: What year is your car?
Me: 2004. Yep, it's 11 years old.
Him: WOW, it looks brand new!
Me: Thanks.
I gave him mental points for actually spotting the differences between my car and what was likely his son's 991! Most people have no clue.
One quick(er) story. I once spotted my wife standing behind the car when we were about to head out for a drive. I asked her what she was doing and she said, "I was going to ask you to pop the trunk." I chuckled, popped the rear lid (yes, I'm a wiseass), and said, "Not sure what you need in there but here you go..." In my defense, I smiled, took the bag she was holding and put it into the frunk for her. She also laughed at herself since she knew the car's engine was in the rear.

Pouring bags of ice in a cooler in the frunk this summer... A staff member from the grocery store runs out and said "I can believe those things run on ice. What will they think of next?"
Back when I had my 911sc I got a comment from a guy at a gas station he said," is that your car". I said yes. He then proceeds and says. "Porsches they're just like the old vw beetles. Why do people pay so much for them." I tried not to laugh and said idk good question. Haha
Unloading my car at the hotel at a track event last month, a very nice British tourist struck up a conversation with me. After explaining why I was there and what the roll bar was for, she stated, "I didn't think Italian cars were very reliable".
I kicked her in her lady parts.
A guy I know has a large exotic car collection. It includes a bunch of Ferraris (Enzo, F-40, all sorts of great stuff).
Of course, they are all red. He told me that his mom once asked him why he had so many of the exact same car.
Lady in grocery store parking lot: "Is the engine in the back?"
Me (feigning concern); "God, I hope so ... that's where I left it!"
It took her a moment, then she cracked up laughing. Sometimes you just can't pass up a good straight line.
I had a 3 year old boy stop and stare at my car car in the ferry line up , his dad's like come along , yes it's a nice car.
I've had kids admire it a few times.
Theses cars just look awesome like a piece of art
The best was on a rally from New York to Nashville, my girlfriend and I pulled into a speedy mart somewhere in Kentucky to grab a Red Bull and snacks. She went in the store and I'm on my phone suddenly there's a questionable group of people gathered around my car. One of them comes to my window and I lower it.
Questionable guy: I never knew they made hybrid Porsche's, why the hell wouldn't you get the real thing?
Me: It's not a hybrid, It's fuel injected just like your F-150.
Questionable guy: Well then why's it so damned quiet?
Me: *puts foot down on the pedal*
Questionable guy: [looks to questionable friends] *inaudible*
Me: *thumbs up & smiles*
While easily 95% of the comments I get are positive, I think my favorite happened to my wife...she was coming back to work after lunch and a San Diego patrol car fell in behind her...and proceeded to follow her for a mile or so. When she pulled into the parking lot and LEO followed her, she walked up to his window and asked if she could help him...
Turns out that neither he or dispatch could decipher "5CHN3LL" without her help.
Was in Seaside Oregon just over a month ago on our way to Cannon Beach. For those who don't know, Seaside is a bit like the Jersey Shore on the East coast, full of 'rambunctious' kids, amusement arcades and iffy street behavior. We came back to my 996 cab parked in the street and there are about 5 or 6 'iffy' looking kids surrounding the car. I think, oh oh, here we go.... One of the kids pipes up and says, "cool car Mr., mind if I take a picture of me next to it?" "Knock yourself out" I said. I was totally and pleasantly surprised. Nice kids in Oregon. Sucks about today's shootings....
While I sometimes get comments on my new'ish (981 Cayman S), it's always the 996 that attracts. Almost every time I go out, I get a thumbs up, from exotics on the freeway to people at the gas pump, or ask me if I want to trade cars for the weekend. And this is in LA, where there's a Porsche on every corner.
On the way home a couple days ago I pull up at a stop light. I hear some kids talking two lanes over and the Mom shushing them - then I hear the word "car". I look over at a minivan with two boys hanging out the window and pointing at my car and the mother looking horrified. I smiled at her and gave the boys a thumbs up as I rumbled from the light and we all laughed. High point of my day
In my hopped up 70 914 on the way home from an Autocross I stopped to fill up and grab a bite. As I am sitting on the curb with a sub sammich the group of teenagers come up to check out the car. "So how fast is it" as he stick his head the open driver window. "speedo goes to 150 !!! yeah it's FAST" he says.
Me "Yup" and kept eating my sub. Thinking to myself foot pasted on long down hill 125 is all it will get.
I was at the gas station filling up the Boxster the other day and this nice looking woman walked over and said "you have a very nice car" Before I could say thank you, the yahoo on the other side of the pump with his raised 2wd pickup (yes, not a 4x4!)and hat backwards said "Yes, I do have a really nice truck, want to go for a ride?".
She turned to him and said " I was speaking to the guy with the nice Porsche not you Jethro" turned and smiled at me. I smiled back and shook my head in wonder.
Finished filling it up, got in, drove off and and laughed
Waiting for the flow of pedestrians to pass at the Mississippi State vs. Arkansas football game I heard a particularly redneck looking fellow say to his friends "That's a nice lookin' Carvette!" One of his friends replied "That's not a Carvette, it's one o 'em rice burners."
(Since I'm a Mississippi State fan, I can only assume they were from Arkansas!)
right.. because you know exactly what Seaside NJ is like
this thread is strange cause no one says **** to me about my car, and i like it that way. no one cares, ppl are too busy going about their lives. but if you love writing about what small children and moms say about your p-cars in grocery store parking lots... cool i guess

I've never seen a child under 8 pass by my Porsche without smiling & saying something positive about it to their parent! I'm sure the Speed Yellow helps, at that age even males aren't ashamed to admit they like it!
Taking a left turn at an intersection the other day, I hear "Niiiiicccceee porsch maaan... Niiiceee", I turn my head and it was a homeless (?) guy holding some sign. LOL
Just a few years ago, driving through the downtown eastside, in the Boxster with the top down, I hear some homeless druggie on the sidewalk shouting at me something like "HaHa look at the pansy car". Just couldn't live it down so now I drive a 911.
Some great things in this thread. A lot of my comments I think are because it sounds great, looks the part, you know a taco is a beautiful thing and I'm a pretty happy/open looking got (I think), which doesn't intimidate people from saying hi, nice ride, she's loud, etc.
Today I was pulling into the office lot and below me is a school for mentally handicapped teens. They were out side with the teachers waiting for the bus to go bowling. I turned off the car, got out and smiled/waved, one boy said "cool car, is that a Cadillac! ? " his teacher said no a Porsche, then another boy says it sounds like a race car. So I walk up and am talking to them, they're asking questions, the two boys that started the convo say, I like your hair and the other, you have a nice sweater on sir. It was a great way to start the day. I think next week I'm going to see if the teachers would let me take the ones who want to for a ride down the road. No not because it's the best car in the world, or for brownie points, but if I can make just one of their days, weeks, month, etc that would be great.
A local guy has an db9 and he'll take kids down the block, so it's still ok in that community to do things like that. I'm really loving the small town thing.
That's actually a pretty cool idea and I'm sure you would make their day, but make sure you protect yourself. Either take one of the school staff along with you or get yourself a camera that films inside the car (make it clear to people they are being filmed though). That is if they would even let you (probably not unless maybe you are pretty well known to them).
It's unfortunate, but in this day and age it's far to easy to get burned just for being a nice guy. All it takes is for the kid to use the wrong wording when trying to tell their parents about it and an over protective and paranoid parent will go ape ****
Whatever to the jackholes in this thread.
I get tons of nice comments. I can't get gas without someone asking about the car and I get a bunch of thumbs up. It's fun.
My best was sitting at a red light out on a deserted area and a guy pulled up in his minivan with several 6-10 year old kids. Both of us had the windows down. They were all checking out the car. And the kids were yelling "race him race him." Dad revved the engine and gripped the wheel. At the light he "floored it." I let him win to the next light, which is always red because traffic engineers are ********.
At the next light the kids were pointing and whooping it up. Dad was laughing. I looked over and said hold on, let me put it in race mode and leaned down and hit the spoiler button. The kids were like "oh ****" and then I just dropped it on the light. At the next light, because traffic engineers are ********, the kids had huge grins and thumbs up.
Cars can be fun, try not being an ******* and you can find out all for yourself.
That's the thing, if you're enjoying your car and have a huge grin on your face I think people will see you as approachable and want to share in some of that enthusiasm. But if you're acting like a Porsche "*****" you'll just continue to perpetuate the stereotype.

"So I walk up and am talking to them, they're asking questions, the two boys that started the convo say, I like your hair and the other, you have a nice sweater on sir."
Sorry, but this uneccesarry part of the story creeped me out. I also think that offering to take the kids for a ride during the school day is not a great idea...for a lot of reasons. Most of which have to do with holding onto your money...and your reputation. It's a different world out there.
Depending on their issues, that isn't surprising commentary from special needs kids and I can see how that is an important part of the story given how said the interaction put him on a good foot for the day. It's nice to be flattered from time to time regardless of the source
Indeed it is and thus a quite sad one too.
My parents wouldn't know where I was most of the day and now you get CPS called on you if you let your kids walk home alone from the park
Havent gotten too many comments about the 996...Maybe I look too scary.
Have gotten a lot of comments about our 56 Ford sunliner, including a woman in a parking lot who waved me down so she could kiss the car (didn't even ask, was just kind of mesmerized by it), and also causing 2 accidents while people were staring at the car.
gnat, for sure, would have it videoed or at the very least a voice recorder. Like you said, you just never no. Also I'm sure some sort of waiver/permission slip would need to be signed. It isn't a bad idea to have the teacher(s) in the back seat either.
Fortunately the town I'm in is still about a decade behind the lawsuits and b.s that happen often. It is still ok to do some stuff that would be odd in a larger area. The population is about 5k people in about 40 square miles.
For sure realize the comment could be creepy, but again they where moderately to severely challenged. The hair comment was from a balding pre-teen boy...my point it is, I'm happy I have been so blessed and if/when I share that, I feel great to make a difference.
I got some great LOL's from some comments, "nice Camaro"
jesus man stop taking. you're just making it worse, why do you continue to affirm that you seek the approval of children?! (or anyone for that matter! lol) this thread cracks me up
gnat - EMBPilot is just over here trolling from the lawnmower engined forum. He does that when it gets boring over there - which is most of the time. The 996 forum is where it's at. The 993 forum is where it isn't.
The plump ones sometimes have self-esteem issues and are willing to do the really dirty stuff. Drop a couple "You're beautiful" and "the Embraer is just as good as an entry-level Bombardier" and you'll find yourself in blumpkinville in no time flat.
Haha! The old emb was pretty long ago, long before u were even on RL. I can be found in larger equipment now if ur so interested in body types lol
I guess you could compare the EMB to something like a 996? It's the kind of thing you evolve out of.
I'm going to call a forklift to carry me out to my car now, maybe I'll get some reassuring feedback from strangers like u guys do
Don't know about the shore, but the odds aren't looking good for the state as a whole
So Quad, if we are so mentally deficient, why is it you keep coming here and posting drivel? Looking to try to feel better about your own mental inadequacies? Unfortunately your lack of mental capacity has led you down the wrong path.
KK might be an *** and an idiot, but at least he has a clear purpose to his life. You're just the guy running in circles while flailing your arms wildly about something the rest of the world doesn't see.
I was busy laughing my *** off and didn't have the time to think. When You're on a roll, it's hard to keep up.
FWIW, I know four 993 guys and they're all - shall we say - on the husky side. So, DT is spot on.
With that much surface area, spray tans must cost you a fortune. Do you use an airless sprayer or HVLP?
I'll be outside handing out "ways to compliment my 996 using terms that I will not accidentally interpret as IMSB-related and take offense" cards to passers by if anyone needs me.
