Homelink and Compass both work, but I have yet to test the electrochromic mirror because I haven't had a chance to drive it in this cold weather.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello! I just acquired a 2004 cabriolet and I want to access the power cable in the console for a Homelink mirror install I'm planning. I popped the plastic drivers side panel off the center console, and now I think I need to remove a piece of carpet. Not wanting to break anything, can someone tell me how to get that carpeted panel off? And is that the best way to expose the 'phone' power cable? I plan to use just ground (brown) and switched power (red/green). Thanks!

POST 2Original post

Most of the time the phone power cable is underneath the panel on the PASSENGER side.

Some people have communicated the power lines WRONG on the phone plug on the forums. The RED/GRN line is CONSTANT 12V+ POWER. GRN/BLK is SWITCHED 12V+ When in doubt, use a multimeter to check! The original factory cell phone plug is located in the lower console and usually lays on top of the airbag module. [IMPORTANT!] Always pull the E8 fuse BEFORE splicing these wires! Brown = Ground Red / Green = Constant 12+ volts Green / Black = Switched 12+ volts Yellow / Black = relayed 4+ Volt Signal (originally used for Radio Mute when using the factory cellphone) For removing the lower console's side panels, watch this video at the 2:30 mark... Thanks for correcting the switched power note! Naturally I don't want to put in a parasitic draw to drain my battery. I watched the video, but the poster skipped removal of the carpeted panel. I'll just assume you pull it off like the plastic panel adjacent to it. The Homelink feature will probably be the only mod I do to my 996. Thanks!

POST 5Original post

That's correct it just pulls out and snaps back in like the other side panels. No screws to worry about.

POST 6Original post

Pull at the edge nearest the front of the car, and pull straight away from the tunnel. Two plastic nubs fit into metal clips there. -Tom

POST 7Original post

I found mine laying on the carpet after I pulled the panel that had my heated seat switches.

OK! I yanked on the carpeted panel and Voila, out came the panel. I had to dig around a little and sure enough, the wire with its proprietary connector revealed itself in allits glory! Now, armed with the knowledge of the correct switched power source, I will soon be powering up my Homelink mirror with auto dimming and Boy Scout Compass! Note for future explorers: I pulled the carpet panel on the driver's side, but I think the connector itself was squarely in the. middle of the console and could be reached from either side. The mirror I'm installing came from a late model Hyundai (Gentex mirror) courtesy of LKQ pick-your-own-parts, and has the same form factor as the original Porsche mirror. A big THANK YOU to everyone who responded to my original post. Porsche parts are pretty expensive, and I didn't want to break something that would have sent me to the Porsche dealer looking for a replacement!

POST 9Original post

v cool - tell us more about this mirror install.

With the help from Rennlisters, I did the wiring today and got it working (20 degrees in my garage!). I'll put together some pictures and make. a separate post. I'm out of town next week, so it will have to wait til I get back, but it's a good project for the winter, and nobody notices it unless you tell them!

POST 11Original post

Very, very cool. Does the Homelink and compass work in it?

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 19861942

Funny you should ask! Homelink and Compass both work, but I have yet to test the electrochromic mirror because I haven't had a chance to drive it in this cold weather. Our streets are covered with salt, so I was able to program the homelink to open my garage door (Works!), and the mirror says I'm pointing North (which I think is pretty accurate!). Testing the mirror will take place when I drive the car at night on dry roads! The total cost of this mod could be $200 if you go the established route, or less than $50.00 if you follow my example. (LKQ pick your own parts($20 for mirror), and mirror to mount adapter from Mastertailgaters.com ($20); and electrical connectors from your own surplus parts box! Most auto mirrors are now from Gentex, and if you find one that has all the options you want, it will work in any vehicle. I WILL post a how-to in the next few weeks. This is a great community, and this mod looks factory stock, IMHO, and adds lots of value inexpensively.

POST 13Original post

Old thread... Sorry for necromancy. Does this phone cable exist on early 996s?
