Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Does anyone have any experience with the Flat 6 group in GA.? I have a friend in Chicago that's thinking about sending his 996 down there for a motor rebuild. It sound like a Singer operation for engine only in GA. Do they have a good reputation, from what I know it's $20K+ and this is a good friend of mine, so I don't want him throwing away good money. He loves his 996.

FSI (and LN Engineering) are quite literally Pillars of this community. While they rightfully promote their services here and elsewhere, they at the same time are extremely generous with their knowledge and help very many with suggestions and free technical advice on this forum. Not sure how much research your friend actually did here...
A rebuild at FSI is not cheap, but you know it will be done right/once.
You say he loves his 996? Then he's sending his car to the right place for an engine rebuild. My engine is there now for a Stage I build, with a few extra goodies thrown in
. The intake process is involved and it's a 2-way street; Jake has rejected rebuild requests before and FSI still has a year long queue. Many of the known modes of failure for the M96 engine will be addressed, e.g. D-chunk, IMSB, RMS, etc.
I have spent my life working in educational media and communications for more than 25 years. I've had the honor of working with US presidents, civil rights leaders, scientists, law enforcement, military, health/medical doctors, lawyers, athletic coaches, clergy,... the list goes on and on. But I have NEVER met someone as brilliant as Jake Raby. Never. He is the real deal folks! And, he runs a tight ship at Flat 6 Innovations. Working with The Knowledge Gruppe for the past 3 years has been one of the highlights of my career. He really cares about helping people learn more about these cars and these engines. Not just Porsche engines, but also aircooled VW engines. I joke sometimes and call him the engine whisperer. He literally can walk up to one of these cars and diagnose it on the spot without even touching the engine. Guess you could say he tunes into "other frequencies" that the average mechanic can NOT receive.
There would be no one else on this planet I would send my Porsche to have a reconstructed engine done. The "reconstructed" part is important to remember if you go with Flat 6 Innovations. Most of the parts that go into his engines are patented or proprietary parts designed exclusively by him. Jake Raby is a master engine builder, inventor, and U.S. Marine... and someone I call my friend.
dporto, wildbilly32, bill808 and I have all had the pleasure of dealing with Jake. Tell your friend to not come across as a "privileged jerk" or he wont make the first cut. Best of luck getting in the queue.
While that's great advice if your friend wants to have the best M9x engine built...it's also great advice for working with anyone!
Even in my work, someone who is reasonable and easy to get along with gets more from me than a jerk.
5 o'clock means I stop working...if you're a jerk.
If you're not, I'll work all night long and through the next day to fix your problem.
In work that I do on the side, I've told people to find someone else based on their attitude.
When I ran our family business, my father often told me "you don't have to please everybody. You don't need everyone's business."
I still live by that.
He's made the right choice...tell him to get in line for 2022 if he hasn't already.
He could get in line before me even since I chose a later 2022 date.
If it's an elective build like me and he can drive his car until he ships it off to be rebuilt, the time will go quicker than if something is broken and it will have to set in the garage for the duration.
If my engine was broken, I'd consider shipping it now and not having it in the garage reminding me of the wait.
This
. Describe your love for your car, don't question him, and BE PATIENT. The experience I had with FSI was and continues to be amazing. The engine is worth the wait.
yea, he has 160K+ miles on a 1999 and he's bitting at the bit to get it down there. I only have 46K on a 2001 and I'm contemplating at 100K shipping in to him. Mine's not a daily driver and sits in a heated garage in the winter but I take it on long drives up state 2+ times a month and I love it.
Jake, has responded to that very question many times in words that you might not like to hear. haha But here is a response on a thread that he made a few years ago. I think you can get the picture...
that's a lot of words... and I don't know anyone named jake. Flat 6 seems to have a good reputation with a vocal fan base here so I'll leave it at that. But give me a break with the "don't question" cucking.
Cucking? hahaha I think you meant to chuck or "chucking". Be careful with the cuck work. haha
Seriously, not trying to beat my own drum, but being on RL or Porsche 996 owner for as long as you have and not have heard of Jake Raby is like walking into Waffle House and being surprised the waitresses are missing teeth.
Nope, I meant cucking... I'm not here to dump on a dude's business in any form. But I assure you "Jake from flat 6" is not infallible questions are healthy.
I gotta say that this is the most unique thread I have read. Scratching my head a little bit. Not being familiar with Jake, his work, or his company is a little unusual as a 996 owner, but some folks own the car and may not be in the community. So I tip my hat to you for asking the questions.
Spat my ****ing coffee all over my monitors at this epic exchange, thanks dudes.
I love the mind blow some dude not knowing who FSI is... Off to the education camp for you.
A lot of people wouldn't know of Flat6 without this forum, myself included. Jake, Charles, and whoever else is on his team are dialing in a "somewhat" problematic platform and provides insight to a lot of questions posted here, not many "vendors" do that. The 996 has it's issues and they're addressing them with tact and diligence. If or when my 996 dies, they would be the first and probably only choice to bring it back to life. Plenty of other builders out there, but not many that have educated and trialed to this level for a mere M96.
Man do i miss going to Waffle House. Lived in Arlington Tx for many years and back then it was all you can eat on Sunday mornings. Always greeted with loud Mornin from the staff upon entry. Americana at its finest!
I should clarify, when I said dont question I meant during the initial conversation if you wish to purchase an engine. Question him all you want otherwise, but if you want an engine be willing to play the game.
Don't question during the initial conversation... OK, that's ****ed up. I hope it's inaccurate.
If it were me, it does not sound like I would make the cut.
What, if anything does your engine do to alleviate the oil starvation issues these cars exhibit on track, I am looking to be able to run on slicks and exhibit well over 1G in cornering and braking force
I would like the power band of my engine tailored to 4.5K RPM and above and am willing to sacrifice low end for top end, what do you suggest ?
What do you consider the safe red line RPM for your engines ?
Do you recommend running external oil cooling for extended track sessions in the heat of the summer, what, if any provisions does your engine come with to accomplish this ?
I do not like running a deep sump due to low ride height and possible damage in an off track excursion, is it required with your engines ?
I want to run discrete sensors for Oil P, Oil T, Water P, Water T, AFR in both banks to log on my Aim data system, can you outfit the engine with provisions for these in the locations you think will provide the best data return ?
What do you suggest, what can be done to minimize rotational mass to the greatest extent possible ?
I run a cup deckled with airscoop, can we take advantage of the airflow ?
And that is just the stuff off the top of my head...

You know I must take exception to some of the "don't ask questions" of Jake comments. During the initial talk I had with Jake he answered my questions even though I didn't have many because I knew what I wanted from reading his comments here for years. In my opinion and from my experience Jake is incredibly knowledgable, intense, direct and does not suffer fools gracefully.
In other words the kind of person I prefer to deal with.
How to go from FSI to Waffle House in 3 easy steps. This has to qualify for the thread drift of all time.
FSI gets it done in a refreshing manner. Sad to say but in this day and age it is a rare commodity to hand over large sums of money to an engine builder (or any company) and have the product delivered on time with the quality as described.
Asking questions and questioning his abilities/process are two different things, so I suppose it is inaccurate. Obviously anyone putting down that kind of money asks questions.
Im outta this thread lol.
I asked some questions and Jud & Jake answered them all.
I dont think that asking lots of questions is a problem, just dont be a jerk, no one wants to deal with a jerk.
Jake is very open about everything and theres
no fine print.
Everything is discussed in the open, and youll find that youll have very few questions.
Most of my questions were about options and what they would give me. ( I chose to get all the options)
98% of your questions will be answered before you get a chance to ask them.
I dont think any of your questions would be a problem, and some of them will be answered in their pre-sales webinar.
Open a ticket with Flat 6 Innovations and let them know youre interested in getting in line and would like to view the webinar.
If you want the most reliable engine, that is redesigned to handle long sweeping turns, with the best torque curve for the track, that has all the vulnerabilities dealt with...open a ticket now!
Dont take my word for it, get it directly from Jake.
Shoot. Late to the party, again.
No further comments need to be made, but I'll make some anyway. Get your engine reconstructed by the Flat 6 group. You will have a significantly better machine than came from the factory, with the lowest level engine he makes. If you buy the monster R43, you'll have an engine like no other. All due to his studying and experimenting with these engines to understand and fix their weaknesses over the past few decades.
I found Jake to be quite straight forward, no nonsense, good conversationalist. Answered all my questions. Mine were not as involved as some of zbomb's, but I know he'd be happy to discuss all these points. They are interesting aspects of the engine. He likes to think about these things in detail and has ready solutions to them. If he doesn't, and the issue is interesting enough, I bet he'd go figure it out.
Waffles with a side of pancakes please! Waffle House is required dining when we visit relatives in Indiana. Carbo loading for the week!
I'm pleased to say that the Waffle House started in the town where I was born. The little town of Avondale Georgia.
And, for the record, I don't care how many teeth my Waffle House waitress has or doesn't have... all I need to know is how fast can you get me those hash browns!
Smothered and covered People!!!! Can I get a witness??! hahaha
True Waffle House story. I was sitting at a Waffle House near the FloriBama lounge (bar) with some good friends of mine. One of those friends had recently had a DUI court date, and had mandatory community service as part of his outcome. The Waffle House waitress that came over to us at the counter was VERY pretty - and had all her teeth. My DUI friend made a comment that he had never ever seen a Waffle House waitress that pretty. He said he wondered why she worked there? I quipped back - well - maybe this is HER community service! Needless to say, all my party exploded in laughter - except for Mr DUI...
I know I'm late to the party (I was stuck at IHOP), and I've already forgotten who posted it first, but I think "don't question" someone is not the same as "don't ask questions", i.e. the distinction is between doubting or challenging an expert opinion, not asking about how something works.
There's a m96 builders' group on Facebook. Jake is active on there as well as Baz and Lee from Hartech in the UK. All have an apparent respect for each other, but every once in a while some tool will come in to the group and question why something is done in a way that is clearly a "challenge". The best one in recent months was about using stock connecting rods. So here's and example of the distinction I'm making: asking a question: "Do you use stock connecting rods, or upgraded ones?" vs questioning " Are you seriously only using stock connecting rods? (usually followed with some form of "analysis")". That second one usually elicits a reopnse like - "we built 200 engines last year. and the year before. How many have you built?"....of course the real answer is "I'm preparing to get ready to start planning the process for finding someone to build my first one."...but we usually get silence.
A good test for the radar detector that I haven't bought yet. Oh! and I need a car to take a picture of. ETA for my Waffle House car pic is late August. Stay tuned!
I think I might have started something... Something GOOOOD! haha
We can call it...
Porsches and Waffles
or
Porsche and Places without Teeth
or
Waffle House or Bust
or
Smothered and Covered Porsches
or
WaffleRun 2021
hahaha... maybe y'all can think of better ones. This would make for a great t-shirt!
My wife's only demand when I bought my 911 was a top notch radar. Worth all the $ I spent, 30k miles and haven't got me yet, and I give them lots of opportunity.
Hey Guys,
Another point of trivia.. the other great southern first similar to the great Waffle House chain is called Huddle House. Basically identical with similar dining and menu... and get this... it also originated in my home town - Decatur Georgia which is the location of Avondale.
Even better news for YOU Bill... There is one in Nebraska!!!
https://locations.huddlehouse.com/ne...-s-lincoln-ave
Better only 92 miles RT. Can you get covered and smothered there? Just exactly what is covered and smothered? I have a guess it ain't the best nutritionally but it sounds delicious and another guess is there is some cream gravy involved...yum...
"scattered, smothered and covered" is normally a Waffle House expression, but YES, they can "smother and cover" your hash browns at the Huddle House. They cook them the SAME way as Waffle House. Usually, "scattered, smothered and covered" means the hash browns are cooked spread out and browned and then the cook adds onions and cheese. It a little taste of heaven my friend!
Oh... and in the south, the waitresses at the Huddle House have about the same amount of missing teeth as the Waffle House. Gotta keep the consistency!
hahaha
No cream gravy!!??
edit: I see Option posted the menu. I would have to do scattered, smothered, covered and country. You got to have cream(sausage) gravy!
edit2: Huddle House looks like the same website as Waffle House except the name.
edit3: I realized I would have to add egged. "Three over easy please."
3am on a Satuday night, two (what I later presumed as friends) had gotten into a fist fight in the parking lot. Nobody thought anything, or said anything for that matter. That is until the waitress yelled that their food was ready, which promptly ended the fight, they sat down and ate, never saying a word.
You don't go to Waffle House only for the food, but the whole experience. It's a national treasure.
I haven't been to Waffle House since the 80's. It was a regular thing back then, racing 3 nights a week at 3 different local tracks, and once a month to Darlington, Rockingham, Bristol. The Waffle House was the only place to eat/gather after a race, most times ending late midnight or after, still pumped up on Adrenalin from a win (or licking wounds from a lose). But I don't remember all the "toothless waitresses" ? or else I just didn't look at their teeth, I got a Waffle House about 3 mile from me, I'll have to go check it out now !!!!
We havne't got Waffle House up here - or Huddle House either. More's the pity. We have to make do with Denny's. I have been known to pop into Waffle House when I'm down in Alabama or Georgia. That hasn't happened in over a year either (*$#^& Covid).
Up here in Marin County, we don't have Waffle Houses...only Amy's Organic.
Sometimes ya just want to eat the junk. Have to go to the East Bay for it...
Yes I have been there for the 1st engine rebuild class taught by Jake in 2009. Jake is a perfectionist Ex-Marine & your car/engine could not be in better hands.
As soon as I win the lottery I'll buy another Porsche & send it to Flat6innovations to let Jake do what ever he recomends to it.
