Reported cause
The issue is the rear boots have internal stops that help center it.
Leading evidence: 'rear boots have internal stops' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'rear boots have internal stops' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check motor' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Only had one pop off when we changed AOS, and simply pushed it back in.

Well thanks I will order one of those hoses for now I pulled it out and ran a heater hose that fit tight inside each one to connect.

that looks like the hose on mine running from front of engine, I see that hose running through intake but it seems broken in the middle should it be one unbroken hose from AOS through manifold to front of engine on passenger side?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

then had the tiptronic limp issues got that fixed.
Seems like it never ends. On my 03 911
first got the immobilizer starting issue sorted.
then had the tiptronic limp issues got that fixed.
then my fuel sender was leaking replaced that.
then my headlight switch is bad fog and high beams only, ordered one will install it tommorrow.
so now I go to smog it so I can start driving this guy to work. It fails smog because two hoses are disconnected.
first one is a 1/4 hose on right hand side.
second is a 1 or larger flexible plastic hose deep in the intake area
the two bottom pics are of the 1 hose on the right side and it runs under the manifold and is open under there.
The two pics below are for the 1/4 hose one on left side one on disconnected right side.
The small hose is an overflow for the power steering pump and remains open on one end. There is a small clip behind it that it snaps in to, and then it points downwards.
I see the one you are talking about it is actually behind my hand in the picture above.
the one I am holding runs across the engine to the area marked below.
Your large hose might be part of the Air/Oil separator (AOS) system. A line comes from passenger side top of engine then goes under intake manifolds towards back of the engine on driver's side, and snaps onto bottom of the AOS. If this is your hose accessing probably requires removal of throttle body, both plenums, and driver side intake manifold.
View is from front of uninstalled engine and not visible when you open little hood. This hose on our car is routed not outboard of fuel lines, but inboard of them and then runs under manifolds towards passenger side. If not seated properly they will pop off.

Hose disconnected under manifold
modes anyone know how that flexible plastic tubing is supposed to run, is it supposed to be unbroken? Do the two sides connect to something under the intake?
There r PET drawings at autoatlanta.com. in the engine section it has the vacuum line picures and u can figure out which small line is disconnected and where it goes.
If the big line is cracked its the crossover aos line its not that flexable and u will need to pull both plenums and intakes and shift the ac compressor up. Some have fished the line but i couldnt.
thank you Ill look that up. It seems post sides are disconnected maybe at the coupling I see in pictures. Im hoping I can rejoin it and not have to replace it.
That small line is sold by the meter and is cheap from the dealer. Its a metric size. The line over the alt is the change over valve for the flap in the rear plenum. Its hard to reach but u can pull the plenums without removing the intakes.
That line plugs into the valve for the rear plenum flap pointing downwards. So gravity is working against it staying in place and I wish I would have secured it somehow, perhaps with a piece of duct tape.
The 996 Turbo's have about 5 times as many vacuum lines and sometimes they're under pressure. What we usually do is put a small zip-tie on each vacuum line to secure it to the fitting.
That big hose is one piece, from the (looking into the engine bay) right side head, near the plastic intake runners nearest rear of car, thru the runners, across the top of engine, thru the left side intake runners into the bottom outside of AOS.
On my 03 C2 I replaced that exact hose, removed the throttle body and the plenum attached to the TB. I was able to snake it through pretty easily. Not a bad job.
Make sure the replacement hose is warm before attempting to snake it through. If cold, you might snap it.
Well thanks I will order one of those hoses for now I pulled it out and ran a heater hose that fit tight inside each one to connect. See pic below
I now need to try to run all the small vacuum hoses. I only see 1 spot to connect to.
17 year old plastic and rubber should all be replaced. Do it right. I fished a piece of string attached to some stiff wire and pulled the AOS hose from right to left. Pushing and pulling at the same time with a twist here and there as needed.

If you have PSE, there is another vacuum reservoir and a line from the intake manifold, and to the PSE valves on the passenger side, but this link covers all the standard lines, mostly around the driver's side.
I also realized that's for a Manual. I don't know the differences to a Tip.
There ought to be one more vacuum line that heads forward to the tip's electric solenoid valve located up by the front driveshaft on the left hand side. It should come off the vacuum canister somehow, probably that 3-way becomes a 4-way. I can't say where the vacuum line is attached on the engine for the NA cars, my tip is a Turbo.
Well I dug into it today pulled the air box and throttle body and front plenum off,
I can now see what I was missing.
1. the hose going to the back plenum
2. hose going to front plenum.
3. I can see the hose going back to transmission and it is disconnected,
problem is I cant get my hand back there.
I am trying to get that back plenum off which should give me enough room to connect the tiptronic vacuum hose,
Ive got 3 off the bands off from left to right and the plenum wont budge. The 4th band all the way to the right i cant get even with a stubby as its in the back but high enough near the top.
any secrets to removing that back plenum?
Get all 4 bands loose, use a plastic interior trim removal tool or be real careful with a screw driver to force the plenum out in an angle. The issue is the rear boots have internal stops that help center it. U just have to force it out.
man that rear plenum is hard to get in.
finally got it.
question does the front plenum vacuum hose need to have the check valve? Mine doesnt have one
If its needed what do you call it so I can order it?
On a 3.4l the pass side front plenum boot goes to the fuel rail and does NOT have a check valve, the drivers side DOES have a check valve. U need to double check for your motor. The PET drawings at
www.autoatlanta.com
will help u find the part if needed.
