Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

14 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I bought a new to me 2003 996 last fall from an independent dealer. They provided me with the CarFax history, which includes several visits with various Porsche service depts over the years. Most of those entries just say service without any detail. I reached out to a couple of the dealers to see if I could get some of the more recent work history. It would be nice to know if plugs were changed in recent mileage, etc. So far, the only responses have been a big red stop sign. They say for privacy reasons, they wont share. Im not looking for any details on the owners. Just the car. I would think a major manufacturer like Porsche would have the ability to track service activity across all dealers based on a VIN. I guess Im being naive. Has anyone on here found a way to get history from Porsche?

POST 2Original post

I've inquired a couple of times, for both I didn't end up purchasing the related cars. Both dealers, Circle in Long Beach and Carlsbad Porsche said they would provide a printout with any personal info blocked but only to the documented owner and only in person and it would be no charge. For the LB one, the selling dealer I was working with couldn't take time to make the trip in person. Couldn't blame him though, it would have taken more than half his day. Maybe if you bought a part or got an oil change they might accommodate, at least give you a verbal of what has been done and when. (I avoid dealers like they are the plague, so I won't even do this)

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yeah. I know the in-person route is probably the most effective. Unfortunately, Im in MN. Owner #1 was in NYC, owner #2 was in Miami. That *would* be one hell of a road trip.... 🤔

POST 4Original post

They would have sold me a service booklet and put a stamp if a required maintenance was done to it. They would not give out any info on repairs or any other work that was done due to data protection bla bla. And their online database could only be traced back to 2010. This in Europe.

What you're running into is not uncommon with dealerships. It's all about liability. You're better off not wasting your time trying to squeeze the dealerships for service history; but instead, take the car to a respected Porsche shop for a full post-purchase inspection. You need to request an invasion inspection (e.g. bore scoping the cylinders) among many other things.

POST 6Original post

I got a 99 coupe. 5 owners. Anyway Awesome Car fax. The car was in Carlsbad and went to Carlsbad Porsche and other California Porsche dealers. The same in Arizona. Anyway I called them personally and they would not release info. My local Porsche dealership only could see some of the service. Anyway based on my car fax with 40 plus records. The issue is that some Porsche dealerships list the work and some just put service.

POST 7Original post

My car was purchased and serviced at Brumos Jacksonville Fl. Well theyve changed owners and records are not available. New dealership was accommodating, but nothing they could do. found salesmans card in owners manual. Searched and found on Facebook. Hes now an executive at Porsche experience in Georgia. He messaged back, remembered car(its unique) and gave me some extra info. found receipt from independent Porsche shop in Ohio. They were helpful. Maybe swing into St. Paul or mpls Porsche service and talk with them. Maybe the can run your vin? Grab a free coffee/water/mint on the way out....

Yeah, I was thinking the same. Ill be at the dealer later this spring to get a key programmed. Ill have to ask the service dept if they can find any history from other dealers.

POST 9Original post

I got some good service history from Carfax. I bought my 03C2 with a transplant engine. Through some investigation with the paperwork that came with the car I was able to figure out the donor car VIN. From there I got a car history. Found out the water pump had been replaced 20K miles ago. I'm going to tackle injectors before I service the water pump. Best,

POST 10Original post

So unless the dealers are part of the same dealer owner/systems, the service records only stay at the dealer. For Instance, I worked at Lexus of Kendall and then worked in West Kendall Lexus... they're owned by the same company so the transfer of documents is easy. Warranty work though is a different story, that probably goes through Porsche's database which can also be regional but inevitably provide the important info required by law.

POST 11Original post

Thats the reason I cant go to the Porsche dealerships in California and Arizona. Anyway I only had the car three weeks but I know I got a driver i already put 1,800 miles on it. The hillbilly mechanic that change the oil did not put a new aluminum washer. I already fix that, clean and apply a graphene coating to the paint, detail the interior and working on getting the radio to work. This car had a clutch replacement 20,000 miles ago and a 30,000 miles service 4,500 miles ago. At Porsche dealerships. All in car fax. Anyway I have figured out why these engines fail bore scoring. Garages and engine builders are making a lot of money because nobody has gotten to the root cause of the problem.

POST 12Original post

This is a real shame that dealers don't utilize the technology thats available to them. When I originally purchased my Lexus, all I had to do was sign up for their owner portal, type in my VIN number and I had access to all services performed, as long as they were performed at a Lexus dealer - any Lexus dealer. Since my car was first purchased new and then purchased as a certified L car I had every single record from mile 0. Why can't they all do that? Btw, no identifiable information was ever included. Just what service was done and when.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

That is EXACTLY what Im talking about.

POST 14Original post

I think that such information can be received from a dealer - it's just a question of whether they want to help you or not. I suppose the above mentioned idea of getting a part at a dealership and casually mentioning this while building rapport could work. That or perhaps network a bit with your local PCA chapter. You never know who knows who....
