Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So I know that in a 996.1 you can relocate the HVAC and install an in-dash cup holder (pictured below). I'm curious if anyone has ever done this in a 996.2. I absolutely hate the weenie cup holders that come in the 996.2 which seem to always hold my drinks at a 15 degree angle, have no bottom, and appear prone to splash hot coffee all over my HVAC/radio/hand at any given moment -- so I would like to replace them with the (seemingly) more robust version from the 996.1. I know that the air vents & shroud located here are a slightly different shape from mkI to mkII, but it would appear that if you left the original mkII cupholders in place and just removed the HVAC, that the mkI in-dash cupholder insert would fit in it's place. Can anyone confirm this? I also realize that things like the ultimate cupholder and the like exist, but I'm going for as much of a stock look as possible.

You will need to probably replace the whole cage/trim. Best bet is to find another member wanting to do the opposite and trade all necessary parts.

POST 3Original post

I just completed this on my 2001 996 Turbo. 996.2 Cup holder, Center console/vent silver, cage behind Center console. 996.1 Air vent will not match up with 996.2 vent. Too much work to replace inside vent. I Cut and spliced 996.2 vent to 996.1 vent, works great ( 996-572-171-04 AS AIR DISTRI). AC control was flipped upside down. This is not shown in pic but worked great. A new one was $300+. Maybe able to just shorten/cut the Center console vent to hook up to the 996.1 inside ac vent....
