Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Pull the exhaust system and look for a wet exhaust port, or a cat/ muffler filled with coolant.

I use a cheap but excellent endoscope(FleaBay/china!!) USB attachment on my laptop - crystal clear compared to the fuzzy picture you have.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

7 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

  • Rennlist: 1 discussions

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My 2000 C2 was diagnosed with a fatal crack in the cylinder a few days ago. Car has 60K and has led a pampered life. Just went out to drive it, started really hard and had white smoke and a not too pretty sound. Towed it to dealer and got the bad news. This is the photo from the scope. There is coolant in the cylinder so makes it hard to see. Anybody know if this is absolutely the picture of a cracked cylinder?

POST 2Original post

My 2 cents : Ask here for a competent ,honest Indie and take it there for diagnosis.Where are you? Doubt you would want the dealer to repair it($$$$$$$$$) - so why get him any more involved ? I use a cheap but excellent endoscope(FleaBay/china!!) USB attachment on my laptop - crystal clear compared to the fuzzy picture you have. Before you even start, ask here for advice on the "What if..." strategy from those who have trodden this sad path before you. You would be astonished at the costs and time involved - I was !

Makes sense. Thanks for the tip on getting a better picture.

POST 4Original post

Based on what your wrote, the engine acting up, white smoke, and the presence of coolant in the cylinder, whether that's the crack or not what difference does it make? Could be a cracked cylinder. Could be a cracked head. Could be a failed AOS. Of the three could be's, AOS is the most common. Is there coolant in just one cylinder? IF so that points to a cracked cylinder/block or head.

POST 5Original post

It does look cracked to me. That said, typically a cracked cylinder will dump coolant in the exhaust. Pull the exhaust system and look for a wet exhaust port, or a cat/ muffler filled with coolant.

Remind me not to party with you Schnell. Ah but it's such a great hobby.

Thanks Jake. With your expertise, it is truly sounding like the death knell. Looks like it will be needing to find a new home with someone who can get it back on the road cheaper than I can. It's available.
