Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion
For now, I finally got the whole back-side apart (I didn't want to risk removing the front lens) and I was able to do shrink wrap repair on the wire insulation.
Leading evidence: 'Use personal account' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Repair on the wire insulation' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I remember reading that you need to remove the headlight lens to replace the wiring.

He once need your headlight to re-use the connectors that are not sold separately.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

To sum up, was going to retrofit new HIID's into my 2000 litronic headlights. No big deal, but noticed the internal wiring was basically shot, with most of the wire lining deteriorated. Installation, wire repair, etc etc is not where my question lies though, I'm just wondering if we have DIY instructions for getting all of the wiring out of the headlights? Most of htem are easy to get to, but there are a handful (looks like 3 wires) that run to the very front of the headlights, and I'm not sure if I have to disassemble the headlight to get to those front wires, or i i can get them out (and later re-installed) without disassembling the entire headlight. thanks!
Wouldn't surprise me at all. I 've got a fair amount of butyl left over from previous retrofits, I was just hoping to get validation before I take it apart.
Like others mentioned above, Adrian will do it.
I just put new harnesses and upgraded projectors in my lights; removed the lens on the first light but left it in place on the second. Its doable but a pain in the butt.
Option code 601 on your build sticker will tell you which kind of lights you have - 601 is Xenon, aka Litronic. The Litronic light assemblies don't need to be fully disassembled in the same way as halogen lights.
My car came with xenon's so the rebuild is much easier and everything is accessible from the back of those fabulously expensive assemblies. Doing this is a classic case of "once you know, it's easy". There are some things on the 996, like the coolant expansion tank that fall into "once you know, it's still a bitch", but this isn't in that category.
I think Adrian will do the whole rebuild for you, but I chose to do it myself because I didn't want to risk shipping. He might have a solution for shipping now, but I'm not certain.
Do tell! I have a 996.2 with xenon's, and all the wiring insulation is shot... In the headlight I just paid good money for off eBay. How do you get the xenon bowl out of the way? I've removed the back cap, xenon bulb, stepper motor, all kinds of Torx screws, but I can't get the brown bowl or its black cage out. The internet is surprisingly silent on the details of the 996.2 bi-xenon innards. Even my Bentley manual is no help, as it only has info on the halogen lights. :/
I'm about ready to halt my attempts at disassembly here, fix the wires I can get to, schmultz liquid electrical tape on anything leftover, and hope for the best.
I haven’t figured out how to make this board flag me when someone quotes me.
Adrian’s videos were my guide. Adrian sells wiring harnesses for our cars. He found connectors that were previously believed to be unobtainums. I have no connection to Adrian other than I’ve bought his stuff and was really happy with the quality and support.
I had an electrical fire erupt in my first car while I was sitting at a traffic light minding my own business. It instilled a no-compromise attitude about auto wiring/electricals. I never owned a British car after that one.
This is good to know. My Plan B will be to reply to one of Adrian's threads if my own attempt at a fix doesn't hold. I knew from other threads that he would sell a wiring harness for a 996.1 car, but last I read he needed people to send him the whole light if you had a 996.2. If he sells the harness for the 996.2 now, so much the better.
For now, I finally got the whole back-side apart (I didn't want to risk removing the front lens) and I was able to do shrink wrap repair on the wire insulation. All the copper was in pretty good shape. So far, all the bulbs work. For mine, the insulation for the fog light and the little side/outboard light were fine. Whew... what a pain though. Had I known then what I know now -- since my right side light was already destroyed by an impact -- I probably would have "down"-graded my lights to regular halogen, which I understand are easier to maintain.
Hi,
I've got 996.2 headlights and have followed Adrian's posts. He once need your headlight to re-use the connectors that are not sold separately.
Now he's actually 3D printing the connectors and building his own wiring harness
