Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello, I currently own a low mileage (45 k miles) well sorted 996 c4s. IMS done, kw v2 adjustable suspension, everything suspension related replaced as well as all hoses etc. Generally is in mint condition, silver on red leather. Car needs nothing for. I am very happy with the car for the last 1 and a half year and it is in great condition. But i found a trade deal on a 50k miles black on black 2010 targa 4. Am not sure i will like the targa as much but is an 8 years newer car with lower road tax and DFi engine. How much should be a fair price to pay on top of it. Of course i ll test drive it first to see if i like it. Anyone made such a similar jump?

POST 2Original post

I have thought about getting a 997.2 for my next daily driver. I will keep my 996 as a track car, unless I have the additional funds to add a Radical in the future. My recommendation is to hold out and get exactly what you want, or at least close to it. Values of any given C4S and 997.2 vary widely. Most of the 2010 to 2012 range from about 45k and up for what appears to be a good example. A good C4S is about 25k and up, from what I have seen lately.

After owning my 996 Targa for a year and a half, I can't imagine not buying a 997, especially a .2! The Targa part is great, and even if you never open the roof, you still get the benefit of an all glass panoramic roof and the wonders of the hatchback. I believe the .2s also benefit from having better UV protection on the glass. Might not be an issue for you as I'm guessing you live in Englandland. but useful for others.

POST 4Original post

That sounds like a fantastic trade. Having owned my early 996 6MT and my 997.2 C2S side by side - it's a huuuuge gap in the better direction with the 997. Do it and don't look back. The interior alone and engine upgrade are worth it.

I'd stay with the 996 4S. First it's sorted and you know what you have. Second the 996 4S is just so different than the others in appearance when it comes to the water cooled 911's. 996 C2's, 4's and 4S in general are just a cool visual design. The 4S is commonly referred to as one of the best looking 911's of all time. You see it and immediately now the period (what 3.5 years like 20 something made which isn't much). It is sort of the like the 964. The mid years are cool but is it a 78 or an 87, what does it say on the back? Probably applies to the long hoods too. Yeah faster but so you can go 180 vs 172 or get to a stop light .5 seconds faster, really not going to knock your socks off IMO. 9964S might be at the lower end of the depreciation curve too if you want to look at financially. Now if you want a Targa, which has to be it's own awesome experience; go for it. Or if the IMS thing keeps you awake yes again. Tracking maybe. Or it you just get bored and flip every few years then go for it. Maybe the 996 stigma bothers you among the other 911 guys. Good luck, fortunate decision to have. I personally think a well sorted 996's better days are ahead. Keep us posted.
