I know the owners manual states you must use a trailer but I had no problems flat towing my Miata and prior to that towing my MR2.

Suggestion

I currently tow a ford focus in this manner and you are limited to not being able to back up beyond a couple of feet but it is easier than using a trailer and trying to find a place to store it.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

7 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Anyone flat tow? I know the owners manual states you must use a trailer but I had no problems flat towing my Miata and prior to that towing my MR2. In both cases there were no instructions that indicated it was permissible . I'm thinking of a mounting plate for a tow bar or possibly buying a tow dolly and towing backward. Does the tranny not lubricate when towing or is there some other reason? Thanks, Bob

POST 2Original post

There was a post, I think in the http://www.986forum.com , about flat towing a Boxster. Someone was trying to find out the same thing. IIRC, they eventually went with something else due to too many unknowns. If you find someone successfully flat towing a 986, then flat towing a 996 should be ok too.

POST 3Original post

I think it would depend how far....around town yes....but pulling behind an RV would scare me

POST 4Original post

My main concern would be that the oil could drain out from the main gear case when the nose of the car is lifted and leave the all those bearings/gears exposed.

POST 5Original post

Manual trans cars should be fine, as it's like coasting. You just have issues to deal with like not being able to back up like you could with a trailer, scrubbing the front tires and straining the steering lock when trying to do tighter turns, and ground clearance problems especially if you're towing backwards on a tow dolly and the already low nose, is pointed down. Plus, if flat towed with the wheels on the ground, the car needs to be street registered and have brake and signal lights in sync with the tow vehicle.

POST 6Original post

If all 4 wheel are on the round then oil migration in the transmission shouldn't be a problem but who tows like that? Most I've seen use at least a dolly.

POST 7Original post

It is very common among motorhome community to "flat tow" or tow all 4 wheels down. I currently tow a ford focus in this manner and you are limited to not being able to back up beyond a couple of feet but it is easier than using a trailer and trying to find a place to store it. I would love to have my 996 Cab available when I am on vacation.
