Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. I installed the 9x1.5mm and it fit perfectly and connected with a soft click.
Leading evidence: 'Install 9x1' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check torque' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I gave it a tug and the connector assembly pulled out by hand, even though I had tightened the nuts good and tight.

I found another post and the OP used 7mm x 1.5 Viton o-ring from O-rings n more.

If the repaired or replaced basket (part C) doesnt solve the leak then Ill order the 7mm Viton o-ring.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My 2002 Targa had an engine fire a year ago. I replaced everything up top with good used or new parts. Only got it started up a few weeks ago. The steering connectors held for a while in neighborhood drives, but the pressure line blew as I turned slow but sharp into my garage. All the flexible and the hard metal p/s lines came from an '04 Cabriolet. They are in great shape, no cracks. But the quick connector o-rings needed to be replaced. So I bought four sizes from O-rings N' More. I installed the 9x1.5mm and it fit perfectly and connected with a soft click. As soon as I fired up the engine I heard it pop and fluid shot out all over. I also have a bag of 8.5mm, 8mm and 7.5mm rings. Is the ill-fitting o-ring the problem? Or is it just a worn out connector? I found a post from several years ago that said the 996 takes a 7.5mm o-ring on the pressure line, but that seems too small. I'll try them one at a time from the 8.5 down to the 7.5 and see if they will make it past the nipple on the quick connector piece. That's been my problem with the boxes of o-rings from Harbor Freight and the auto supply stores. Any input will help. Thanks.
Update. My car dealer service advisor (not Porsche!), who is also my son, suggested I start with the smallest o-ring. So, I tried the 7.5mm just now. It actually fit over the nipple, but... same result – expensive Pentosin poured out on my garage floor. I gave it a tug and the connector assembly pulled out by hand, even though I had tightened the nuts good and tight. I took it apart again and noticed the retainer basket had a bent tooth and was separated at the "notch" where it was joined at the factory. Is the cage supposed to separated with finger pressure, or is it supposed to be braised closed so it retains it's circular strength and shape? That basket is what holds it all together. Maybe that's my problem. And of course, Porsche does not sell the baskets. The entire assembly, including o-ring and basket is around $150. I guess I could have a local welder gently braise it closed, and then file it smooth. Or just break down and spend the stimulus money on parts!
Thanks, yaz. I'll double check torque with those specs. I'm almost certain now that the little 'C' basket retainer is the problem. The entire torqued assembly is popping off of the straight steel line nipple end. I'll try to source a good retainer from the same roller cabrio I bought the lines from. It's just sitting in a warehouse that no one knows about but me and the owner. There's not much left of use to me, but this little basket may be there because I bought the hard line and left the connector going to the rack in place. Now to find the time to drive the 60 miles round trip...
Finding the correct size has been the only mystery in this process. I found another post and the OP used 7mm x 1.5 Viton o-ring from O-rings n more. I forgot his size and ordered 7.5-9. If the repaired or replaced basket (part C) doesnt solve the leak then Ill order the 7mm Viton o-ring.
Okay, I think this issue is fixed. I worked on the basket/retainer by straightening the "forks" and bending it gently back into a circle, and matched up the tiny tab. I did not glue or braise it. Then I torqued it to spec. Possibly the lack of proper torque (I first had only wrenched it until it felt tight) was causing the fluid to gush out which in turn caused the connector to pop off a couple of seconds later. Now it holds firm, no leaks even on tight slow parking lot turns. Thanks guys!
