Since I am someone who has changed from a .1 to .2 cluster, it is doable....however you need to change the engine, abs, even HVAC module and a bunch of other stuff to a .2 as well.

When I swapped out the clusters i also had the new one sent to a cluster company who reprogramed to match the miles of the old one as well as change the faceplates to yellow..I have done this as well.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

9 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My current 911 has white instrument cluster and I like that. Car I'm looking at has black instruments. They are within 10K miles of each other. One car is a '99 and the other one is an '04. Can I swap clusters and keep the odometers intact in the cars?

POST 2Original post

I was looking into this at one point, as I like the newer cluster better. But was told that the new cluster will not communicate with the car's computer. And the plugs are different as well, I'm told. But splicing the wires into the correct pins, maybe? If I could get a cheap 996.2 cluster to try at some point in the future, might be worth plugging it in to see if it works or not.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Good point; there are two questions here. Can you swap a '99 cluster for an '04 cluster? and if you can, can the odometers be swapped between them?

POST 4Original post

Since I am someone who has changed from a .1 to .2 cluster, it is doable....however you need to change the engine, abs, even HVAC module and a bunch of other stuff to a .2 as well. I would argue that you should stop thinking about upgrading clusters....go for a .1 that has the color dials you want. When I swapped out the clusters i also had the new one sent to a cluster company who reprogramed to match the miles of the old one as well as change the faceplates to yellow..I have done this as well. Also, it matters whether you have c4, c2, turbo or gt3 cluster. All give you erroneous dial readings if not matched. Ask me how I know....

If they can change faceplate colors, then that would solve the challenge. Do you have contact info for them?

Okay...how do you know? LOL This is excellent advice and one based on experience. I like my black gauges. Seems more 911 retro in a way. If I wanted a different color, I would send the gauge cluster off to someone who knows what they are doing. Pedro's Garage?

Dundon Motorsports sent it out for me...I can try to get who they used.

POST 8Original post

There was a fake GT3 for sale last year where a GT3 cluster was swapped into a 996.2 C2. I asked the owner how difficult of a swap it was and he said it was a simple swap of the clusters and that the tach was accurate.

POST 9Original post

Quotes source post: 16629939

The tach is accrrate but not the redline. I did start with a gt3 tach and ended up selling it for that reason....my tach ended up being C4s (though I didn't know at time) and as a result the car ran out at a quarter of a tank....I tried to get it reprogramed and we could not. So now I just refill well we for quarter of a tank.
