I wonder if there is a way to reset the shift commands and "start from scratch"...apparently the previous owner was an old slow grandma because mines in 5th before I know it.

I always tell my wife soon as you decide to learn how to drive a stick i will drive you from one Porsche dealer to another all day long and we can go on test drives.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

However I agree with you on the daily commute, the Tip is an absolute BORE in auto mode...I only ever use the manual mode on my tip for the daily commute - only way it makes it bearable...
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Just looked at a 997 C2S that I was interested in.
I'm pretty much a manual transmission guy, but test drove a Boxster R PDK at the dealer and fell in love with the PDK transmission with paddles and sports mode. Heard some semi-decent things about the tiptronic as well, so I thought I'd give that a try. Added advantage that my wife doesn't drive a stick, and I always feel a little guilty having a 'fun' car that she can't enjoy driving.
Not to **** off any tip owners, but it sucked! Wow... what a disappointment. I've heard that the 'sports' software software mod (at $1,100) sharpens it up a bit, but it was really dull and lifeless. The car was a flawless, gorgeous C2S at a decent price so I really wanted to like it, but the tip was definite deal breaker.
That is all...

I have a tip and I have to say at the track, it gives me a pretty big advantage over the average manual drivers. The tip is really amazing around the track, knows exactly when to downshift, upshift, and hold a gear, and I just worry about my lines...But again, I'm a very average stick shift driver admittedly so the Tip helps me.
However I agree with you on the daily commute, the Tip is an absolute BORE in auto mode...I only ever use the manual mode on my tip for the daily commute - only way it makes it bearable...
Driving tiptronic in D mode takes some adjustment and learning. Urgency and quickness of your gas pedal inputs determine the liveliness of the transmission. Transmission also learns and adapts to your driving style after some time.
So if you drive slow and don't stab the throttle, it will settle into the most leisurely shift program and up-shift as soon as it can. If you stab the throttle aggressively and drive in the urgent manner, programming shifts to the aggressive settings.
I love my tiptronic. When I need it, it is a very capable sports transmission. For commuting and daily driving I love the smooth shifts and seamless operation. I have no need to have a SMG type gear banging when I am trying to get through Scottsdale.
I considered a PDK car when I bought my 997. The only ones that I really liked were the ones with the sport steering wheel option that has proper paddle shifters (as opposed to the "push/pull" buttons on the steering wheel). In turbos, the PDK transmission wasn't available until 2010 and those cars were out of my budget. The 997 turbo tip is actually faster than the manual. That being said, I prefer the driving engagement of the manual and that's the way I decided to go.
Similar story here. It was down to an '09 C4S with auto or a '12 C2 manual. Big price difference so I was hoping I'd like the C4S, but couldn't picture myself in a Pcar without a stick. It was the shortest test drive of my search.
Drive it in manual mode before you decide.
I drove a manual car - I put it in gear and drove it for a while. It revved really high and never went fast.
Only way wife was going to OK a "weekend toy car" was if it was a tip (wife and 2 daughters don't drive stick). Besides, the haters/bashers of tips but does not faze me at all but every now and then, I put it in "manual" mode and hit the buttons
I tried manual mode as well. Undoubtedly, it was a limited experience, and I'm sure if I had a Tip I'd learn techniques to get it performing better, but first impressions were not good...
One of the biggest issues I had was the car felt pretty gutless compared to my '04 C2 manual, despite having ~+40 HP. Perhaps the turbo masks that perception with the tiptronic as it has so much
more
hp.
Call me old school but a true sports car should be a manual. I understand that different people have different taste and needs but i will never buy a sport coupe without a clutch pedal. Just my opinion and taste.
For me, it's not as simple... As I said, I drove a cayman with PDK/sport/paddles and would choose it in a second over a manual. It was excellent without the sport button engaged, but just blew me away in sport mode.
But I'm also not one of those guys who works magic with three pedals with
perfect
heel&toe/blip technique.

I think all F1 and most Porsche fans probably realize that...
But
1) they are not running torque converters or even dual clutch type transmissions. Rather sequential transmissions with computer actuated blipping and gear changes... Not like any transmissions available on a street Porsche, though cup cars have similar transmissions.
2) the 'work load' in a modern F1 car is tremendous.... Any 'simplification' offered by sequential blip-shifting is offset by huge amount of adjustments they are making on every lap to fuel systems, energy recovery systems, brake bias, etc. Not easy cars to drive, though I do wish they'd dump the stupid fuel regs and let these guys RACE.
I'm in the same boat here minus the two daughters. When it came down to getting my car, it should have been a "practical" car that we both could drive. I'm not the best at manual (and was a little hesitant to get a 911 as a first manual) and my wife has never driven one. So instead I opted to get the tiptronic for now so that my wife and I could both enjoy it. Now I wanna get a $2k beater like alpine003 said so that we both can learn and feel comfortable driving a 6 speed when its time to upgrade to another one
pfbz - question for you, you wrote "I've heard that the 'sports' software software mod (at $1,100) sharpens it up a bit, but it was really dull and lifeless. "
I just want to make sure I understand, did you drive it while in Sport Button mode, or was the sports chrono package not in the car? I ask because i'm thinking of doing the retro sport button option in my car
My only experience with the early Tiptronic was in a 968. It was pretty gutless, given that the engine only puts out 236HP. However, the owner of the car told me to put it in manual mode, and start driving hard. Oh, man! What a difference. The tip woke right up and allowed me to really push the car. I have little experience with the manual 996 and have not driven a tip, but I'm in the market for a 996 and the only thing I'm considering is the tip. You need to push them before the shift command changes it's attitude.
I wonder if there is a way to reset the shift commands and "start from scratch"...apparently the previous owner was an old slow grandma because mines in 5th before I know it. Not a problem when in manual mode which is still fun, and great on the highway. Pretty fun in my opinion, but to each is own
Anyone know if these are erased or disabled when Sport Mode is activated? I would assume so, but want to confirm
A lot of people would likely be faster in a tip. It's perfectly capable. But, I HATE feeling like there's a big rubber band between the engine and the wheels.
I read somewhere about the 991 GT3 press intro where one of the journos was complaining about PDK being the only trans option. One of the Porsche people replied "Every time you shift, I gain a half car length on you. Shift ten times a lap, and I'm five cars ahead. EVERY LAP."
PDK is great, and I'll likely get one in a new Audi S3 for my work sled. But, there's something awesome about my old analog 911 with a clutch pedal...
I've driven many Tip cars (not 996 though) Porsche has an upper hand on the TIps over Audi, however they both stink IMO. In Cayenne's its not bad, but in a sports car or even a sports sedan (Audi S4, S6, S8) its no fun.
PDK is fun...very quick, but gets boring after a while.
I happen to agree. I've nothing against tips or PDKs but I'm in it for the engagement, not winning track day races. If I owned one I wouldn't see the point in self-shifting and would leave it in auto all the time. I would have no problem with a PDK type transmission in a Merc or Jag or any sport-luxury vehicle but in something like a Vette or Stang or Porsche I would never buy anything but a 3-pedal stick.
