While the 996 seems significantly more complex I am thinking about making some of the DIY things like replacing the water pump and IMS bearing, just because it would be enjoyable after standing at a desk all day.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So I was trying to best decide how to introduce myself when user 'f3d' beat me to the punch and provided a good example on how to start. Hello to all and I look forward to consuming and contributing as I gain knowledge.
I picked up my new-to-me 2005 996 C4S with only 21K miles. I actually didnt even know that Porsche sold a 2005 996! I had been searching for about 1.5 years and my wife was about to kill me. I wanted a low mile garage queen 996 C4S. I know some find it hard to believe but I prefer the 996 4S to the 997.1 4S and I want to drive whenever I want. I am a bit finicky about exterior and interior condition. Luckily I found a great local 4S at Loeber motors in the Chicago suburbs. Much against my better judgment and after having some time difficulties getting a PPI scheduled with Eurosport Motors, I went cowboy and just bought it without a PPI. It is awesome. More than I had hoped!
I have been reading rennlist for the last year as I searched for a 996 and am blown away at the level of help and support. I have read, in-depth, about the IMS issue and committed to make that the first thing I did on my 4S. During the sale the finance guy offered a $3300 4 year/48K mile extended warranty through Fidelity. Apparently because it was not 10 years old yet, I still qualified. My math was forgo the $2100 LN bearing replacement and the coverage actually only costs me $1200 net. I bought the insurance. Now I can drive it like I stole it, I think.
I bought my first Porsche back in 2000, a 1995 993 C2. It had 5K miles and look like it just drove off the showroom floor. I had it for a couple years and then sold because I was too scare to drive it. I am not going to make that mistake again!
Now the problem I will have is I do like to tinker. When I was a kid, I worked with Dad and rebuilt a VW beetle from the ground up. I could drop the engine myself in short order. While the 996 seems significantly more complex I am thinking about making some of the DIY things like replacing the water pump and IMS bearing, just because it would be enjoyable after standing at a desk all day. I am in the midst of ordering a Bendpak HD-9XW life for my garage. This should help with some maintenance activities.
I look forward to the exchanges in the forum. Thank you for everyones incredible previous contributions and future comments.

Welcome neighbor!
I believe there is Joe1972 that just joined and he's in Naperville as well.
Man, it seems like Chicago is really coming out of the woodwork this year. I think we have close to a dozen new members that joined this year from the area.
Welcome and congrats. Looks like a very clean example. I myself like the low miles cars over the higher ones that everyone prefers. I want to be the one rolling those digits up into the 100's.
I like slickrock22 I am also a new 2003 C4S owner!! and from the sound of it you and I have probably been reading all the same material for the last year
just got mine a little over a month ago and im addicted to the forum, ebay, craigslist, google world!! too much stuff to buy! anyways look forward to the new FAM
Congrats and welcome from a neighbor to the north (21 mi) and
a satisfied 40th AE owner, my first 911.
Let us know if after reading the fine print that you are satisfied with your coverage, insurance companies are notorious for excluding 'known problems'
that being said,
I'd invite you for coffee and a drive
Congrats again on really nice 996!
Thanks everyone. I will work on getting some more photos. Fracture I will check the fine print and let you know what I find. Also I would do a meet up one of these days in the Chicago area.
