Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just as the title says, if you know an indie shop that could take the pan off, and cut open the oil filter and do an inspection for IMS failure, please advise here.

What prompts you to suspect there's a need to drop the oil pan? I can tell you the pan likely has some trash that has probably been there since day one. If the IMS is going bad the first signs are noise and generally an inspection of the filter housing oil and filter find scary metal trash (ferrous fine metal particles) along with some what is often bearing seal material. Sorry but I do not have an indy recommendation. There is Jerry Woods Enterprises down in Campbell CA but I do not know if he and his shop do I guess what you are looking for is a PPI. You'll have to call and ask. Here's the number: [phone removed]. If the answer is "no" ask if the shop can recommend some other business that can do what you want done.

http://imsretrofit.com/pre-procedure-qualification/ Remove the oil pan and oil filter and inspect for debris....

POST 4Original post

BRRacing are a great shop located in Los Gatos. There are others (look up Golden Gate Region PCA), but BR is the only shop in the South Bay that I've worked with. Great guys and they know their stuff:

POST 5Original post

Sharkwerks is also in Hayward, or somewhere not too far away.

IMSB pre-procedure qualification? Didn't think of that.

No worries. I'm just in an OCD mode on the bearing. My sphincter is starting to relax a bit on the issue. I did find a shop, but the car in question had the airbag light covered with a sticker, the warning for the retracting wing was lit, there is something going on with the fabric top so the whole thing sort of went pear shaped. It's on a dealer lot in SJC area, but I think I'm going to move on to something else.

POST 8Original post

Not sure if FD Motorsports will do your PPI, but they are great folks. http://fdmotorsports.net/ Also, $10 says that the airbag light is caused by the failure of the driver's side seat belt receiver. The electrical components wear after usage and the failure triggers the airbag light. Obviously confirm the fault error, but save yourself some serious money and fix this one yourself. http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/151141293830?lpid=82

Thanks, good to know but I'm kinda over that car now. It's not so much the airbag light was on, but that the 'fix' was to put some tape over the lamp. I tend to subscribe to the theory of comparative neglect. If that was the fix for this problem - what else has been overlooked or just forgotten?

POST 10Original post

Totally understand. It would certainly make me wary, especially with the other issues. It just happens to be that the failed drivers belt clip was the only thing that I have ever waited on with my 996. I drove around with that light on for months, but would never consider taping over it.

POST 11Original post

The photo of car 115 made me laugh out loud - it's amazing what hoops you may have to jump through to meet sound level limits...

POST 12Original post

+1 for BRRacing. If you haven't replaced your IMS bearing, my POV is: don't waste time/money trying to monitor it; just replace it and stop worrying. It's about $1,500 for peace of mind.
