Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Symptom: Whenever I push in my clutch about 80% down I hear a small click noise (sounds exactly like blinker click). Does not affect driving and cant hear when music on or windows down. Upon further investigation It sounds like click might be coming from a relay on the panel by the driver side. I tried to research and found that sometimes the clutch spring can make a noise, but it doesn't sound like its coming from pedal. I also pressed in pedal about 75% of the way right before the click happens and car wont start, but once I press a little harder to 80% the click happens and car starts. My thinking at this point is if there is a position relay for the clutch that might be making this sound? Let me know what you guys think or have had this problem.

I am pretty sure what you hear is normal. I am not an expert but both my 986 and 996 do this. My 951 is older and does not and you can start that car without pushing in clutch...I think what you are hearing is some type of something engaging the clutch to start. How's that for technical?! I had this same question a few years ago when I got my first 986...

POST 3Original post

Although I have never seen them, on the clutch and the brake pedal are small identical switches. The clutch when pressed hits the switch, telling the computer that the clutch is disengaged and that it is safe to start the car. The brake pedal switch indicates that the brake is coming on and therefore disengages the cruise control. I call them safety switches. It appears that you might have a noisy clutch switch. Apparently they are cheap and very easy to exchange. You could try swapping them and then if it is simply a noisy switch, you should hear it again as you push the brake pedal. If not and the noise is still coming from the clutch, maybe the clutch pressure assisting spring is at fault or that the spring has been removed. There as some people on this board who have removed that particular assisting spring in the past. You may have bought one of those cars that was interfered with in that fashion. That way you can either live with the sound of the switch or exchange that particular switch for a new one, or buy another assisting spring. If the clutch is getting harder to push down then it may be that your clutch is on the way out and probably beyond your DIY capabilities. It would be beyond mine if that was happening to my car. I don't do clutches. Just a few thoughts to throw your way. Good luck.

Even if you change the relay you might still hear the new relay click when you disengage the clutch. #16 and #17 are the clutch switches #9 is the spring in a can. In this diagram #17 is also used as the brake switch although I think they are different part #s. Read this Pelican DIY for more info on your clutch/brake/cruise switches. http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarti...eplacement.htm
