With the seats $300, leather $500, misc supplies and tools you will need, and the hours upon hours it will take to remove, breakdown, sew, reupholster, and reinstall the seats, you will be investing more money and effort than a pair of great condition used seats.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hey guys, I have the opportunity to pick up a pair of 996 sport seats in pretty bad condition (leather) for 300$. The seller has told me the seat frames and hard shell back are in good condition only the leather needs to be replaced. I'm pretty handy with a sewing machine (semi industrial walking foot Singer) and have found a dealer that sells Porsche Napa metropole blue leather hides for around 500$ shipped. (1%-1.5% color matching variation) I found a diy for an 84' interior on the pelicanparts forum but was wondering if anyone has done this already or has seen a diy around? Also have you ever heard of a "press kit" to emboss the headrests with the Porsche crest or anything like it? Thanks in advance. If I can't find anything in the DIY department, I'll make sure to document everything!

POST 2Original post

Check out youtube..I'm pretty sure there are some diy's on there. I remember looking before I did my LW repair on my drivers seat. Good luck

POST 3Original post

I've seen really bad condition leather brought to like new status. If it doesn't have any rips in it, you may want to look into leather restoration products like Leatherique.com to bring it back.

POST 4Original post

Embossing the Porsche logo would be cool. Mine had this from the factory. If I ever replace the leather, it would be nice if I could get the logo redone.

POST 5Original post

I'm just thinking of embarking on the same...we bought a written off 996 as a donor to our 1999 cabrio. The seat leather is gone but the rest of the seat looks ok. Would be keen to know how you get on. I'm possibly not as nifty as you with the sewing machine, I can make a horse bridle no issue but auto upholstery leather is new territory for me! Good luck - keep us posted!

POST 6Original post

Hi, I see that you live in Nice. If you can drive 250km (2h45) there is an excellent "artisan" in Chateaurenard (13160) called Assela. He is specialised in leather and I saw him do a lot of cars (Porsche speedster, Mustang, Jaguar, Alfa Romeo ...), boats and motorcycle seats. I think it is worth the trip and if you go on a weekend it is 7km away from Avignon and there is a lot to do in Provence.

POST 7Original post

Great price on the seats I'm looking for a similar deal. I think recovering small plastic parts can be an easy DIY, but the seats need some skill. From what I hear even upholsterers have difficulty with the leather attaching to the hard rear shell. Good luck.

POST 8Original post

Good luck pordlanzer, sewing your own seats will be very challenging. I can't imagine even attempting that without a verified template. With the seats $300, leather $500, misc supplies and tools you will need, and the hours upon hours it will take to remove, breakdown, sew, reupholster, and reinstall the seats, you will be investing more money and effort than a pair of great condition used seats. There was a guy in NJ about 2 months ago selling perfect 996 sport seats for $1200. So I don't think the DIY route here is a money saver. However if you're doing it for the experience, that's awesome. Please document and share! I have reupholstered two corvette seats (no prior experience) and it took me a good six hours start to finish, but I didn't sew the seats I had purchased new seat covers and new foam. Will you need new foam? because if you do it's quite expensive and will really add to your cost.

POST 9Original post

I've tried putting new covers/foam on my Alfa Romeo seats.....half way through it I brought it to a pro....best thing I've ever done, you'll never match their experience on your first try. And if you don't have all the tools/knowledge, you'll be spinning your wheels. $0.02
