The aftermarket stereo was installed by tapping into the wires upstream of the plug at the head unit, then they ran a harness out to the amp and tapped the speaker wires coming off the amp plug.

Since I am not willing to put money into replacing stock amp or head unit (as neither are particularly good and the more I research the more reliability issues I run into with them), I guess I'll likely be stuck going back to a aftermarket head unit.

Suggestion · Original poster

I definitely have no idea how to test the output from the head unit, as my understanding is that this is all through the MOST (fibre optic) cable, so have to assume this is working or an error message would appear on screen.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

First things first, 2003 C2 Cabriolet, with BOSE factory. PO removed the head unit and amp and installed an aftermarket head unit. I removed this aftermarket unit and am attempting to reinstall the factory kit. After much digging and discovering, I removed all the extra wiring the installers ran and think I have all the factory harness back in order. Plugged everything in and powered up. Head unit powers up, no faults or issues in the display. Radio channels tune, CD player (no CD changer) sounds like it is changing channels and tracks fine....but there is NO SOUND. All fuses appear to be in order and pass continuity test. I'm assuming since the head unit display doesn't show any issues, that it is "likely" ok? There is power to the amp, but I'm thinking maybe it is the problem? Is there a way to test a BOSE amp? Any suggestions welcome and appreciated.

POST 2Original post

This may seem like a stupid question. Main difference between cdr 220 and the 23 is that the 23 uses a fiber optic output. Are you sure your car came with the 23 and not the 220?

POST 3Original post

Were all 2003+ BOSE systems MOST systems? I know my 2002 Bose is not, but I thought all 2003+ were. But if the PO went to aftermarket, there's a good chance speaker wires were rewired/removed. Have you tried hooking up a speaker to the amp to see if you get sound? I'd work my way from the head unit out.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yes, it seems that 2003 was the year of MOST. Both my amp and head unit have the fibre optic connections and the cable is in the stock wiring harness and connects up to both units fine, so I'm pretty confident this was a stock installation. The aftermarket stereo was installed by tapping into the wires upstream of the plug at the head unit, then they ran a harness out to the amp and tapped the speaker wires coming off the amp plug. I know the aftermarket one worked, so know the speaker wires are in tact coming out of the amp. Being very non-electronic, I don't understand how to test the output (or if these is any) from the amp. I definitely have no idea how to test the output from the head unit, as my understanding is that this is all through the MOST (fibre optic) cable, so have to assume this is working or an error message would appear on screen. Hence my logic (and I may stand to be corrected) is that the next step would be to test to see if the amp is working, as it seems to be the bottle neck. Trouble is how do I test that?

POST 5Original post

You should be able to wire a speaker directly to the amp outputs just to see if you are getting sound from that end of the system. If so, the problem is probably the wires from the amp to the speakers. If not, then the signal isn't getting to the amp.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

As everything was working off the aftermarket head unit before and it was tapped directly into he speaker outputs from the amp, I am pretty confident the wires from amp to the speakers are all fine. All indications point to either the output to amp or amp itself. Since I am not willing to put money into replacing stock amp or head unit (as neither are particularly good and the more I research the more reliability issues I run into with them), I guess I'll likely be stuck going back to a aftermarket head unit. I just thought putting them back in would be a nice fix since I had them anyway....and gives me a winter project
