No way the Boxster can run with the Turbo, not saying that, but power and speed at least the potential for speed is not all there is to a Porsche.

Before my 911 I did a test drive in a Cayman, I almost wrote the check for it, but I like the power and the space of the 911, Boxster are selling out dirt cheap I think is a great car for the money But I would never pay over 50000 for the new ones Sent from my iPhone using Rennlistedtrtfytj

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I know this has been discussed, although I figured I would give my opinion snow after owning both.
I always dreamed of having a 911 turbo. I had the money at one time, wife and I disagreed on using the money for a car.... But, that's another story. Then, after buying the wife a Miata, I saw a 986 Boxster S that was inexpensive and I sold the Miata and bought the Boxster for her. After all, it's a chick car, right. Well- flying down to Louisville and driving the car home 6 hours... I was sold and ear to ear smiles that people who think it's a chick car are idiots and never drove one. I loved the car.... I took the car in our divorce.... Yeah, I liked it that much. I sold it this spring when I saw a 996 C4S. It was sooooo close to my exact wish list in a 996 turbo, just no turbos. So I bought it. Awesome car. I did a track day and it was unbelievable on the track. Yet, cruising around town I just missed my Boxster for 1/3 the price. I was also ticked off I let a great driving Porsche go for $11,000.
Well, on the hunt for another Boxster as I decided to be a "collector" as I also bought a 944 turbo this fall, I looked for a 987S. I found a mint condition sub 20k mile car with sport chrono and sport suspension. Flew to the seller and Drove it home 18 hours this weekend. I have to admit, I'm thinking of selling the 996 C4S. I think the Boxster is THAT good.
I'll chime in more through the discussion, but chime in with your thoughts.
when I was shopping for my pcar, I drove a few boxster S's. really enjoyed the car but I had to have a hard top for tracking duties. not all tracks around here will let you arrive and drive with a convertible so it came down to the 911 or cayman. I wanted to be able to bring my kids to the track so I had to have seats in the back. plus the boxster was just too slow for me.
now that they are in the 10k range, I may pick one up once I am done with my 4.0 project..
Hey its your life chummy why not sell the 911 buy a Boxster and with the change set up a hairdressers. You still get the P word of the bonnet.
What ever you do be happy!
I have both a 986S and a 996 Targa
They are both great cars.
For pure driving enjoyment, the Boxster wins hand down. For driving in bumper to bumper the Targa wins as it has a Tip.
They drive differently and sure, who does like an extra 60 hp! I find in back road drive with my PCA club, the 911's pull away in the straights, but I am up their *** in the twisties with my Boxster.
Oil Slick. No need to make snide hairdresser remarks about a Boxster. It is every bit as much a Porsche as your 996. Oh yea, you do realise they are the same car from the front seats forward don't you?
AWD, you can always buy a hardtop for a Boxster. I see lots of them on the tracks in So Cal
Well I have owned both . A 2000 Boxster and a 2000 911. When I had the Boxster I loved it. It is a wonderful undervalued car. It handles like a go cart and is fun to drive. But there is something about a 911 that goes beyond all that. Love the sound of my 911(gundo hack) and the lines (coupe) are just perfect. It is a bit heavier on the steering but I love that feeling. I would not go back to a Boxster because the 911 is a notch above and i never go back in life. Seen it. Done it. Next
I have owned both as well - a 2003 Boxster and now my 2004 996. Gotta agree with lahalte - the Boxster is a very well balanced and extremely fun car. I would still be driving it if I didn't start going to the track. The very first day on the track with the 996 I discovered what the 911 is all about and I fell in love with it that day. I don't think I'll ever go back either, unless there comes a time when the track is no longer for me. In that case I think I'd go for a 981 Boxster.
In terms of price and cost of ownership, my 996 was twice as much as the Boxster to buy and it has cost much, much more to keep it running.
Hey none meant. The point is if you / he / She want a Boxster and save the cash go for it. There all Porsche. Its just a strange post for poster in this section wouldn't it be better in the Boxster thread. An "I tried a 911 but hey I'm back in the Boxster fold"
I like Boxsters don't think otherwise and for sure I have nothing against hair dressers either.. As I say sorry if I caused offence none was meant.
PS There is a link below comparing the Boxster and the 911 in the most basic way on you tube.
I don't like posting links but if it helps :-

I've owned a base 2002 Boxster since Jan 2002 and a 2003 Turbo since June 2009 and love both cars. Switching from the Turbo to the Boxster I don't feel like I've giving up the important things. Sure I lose around 200hp when I move from the Turbo to the Boxster but the Boxster's ~220hp is plenty given the car's considerable lightness compared to the Turbo. No way the Boxster can run with the Turbo, not saying that, but power and speed at least the potential for speed is not all there is to a Porsche.
In the twisties I can toss the Boxster around, get it light over the rises/crests, really push the envelop, make myself car sick if I want, while over the same road in the Turbo requires I be a bit cautious. Having 3400lbs pushed by 420hp could have the car off the road and where I drive the twisties there is no shoulder, not even a guard rail, as there is no room at the side of the road. I don't fancy a tumble down a mountain side in my Turbo.
I owned an '03 Boxster immediately prior to owning my 996. The Boxster was a better-handling car when overdriven (at least when it comes to just recklessly throwing the car into any corner) - but my 996 makes up for that in the looks department. My Boxster was good looking...my 996 is beautiful. A 986 Boxster with side skirts looks about as good as a vanilla 996 - but throw an aero kit on a 996, and...rowr.
Having driven the hell out of both, I'm going to differ with OP. At the end of the day, I like my 996 more than I liked my Boxster...
My '03 Boxster...
...sold when I bought my '99 996. Hubba hubba.
Add me to the list that has a Boxster and a 996, and some other stuff. The Boxster is fun, and a great car, but no where near the 996 in terms of enjoyment. Maybe a Boxster S with the 3.2 could be close, never driven one.
I have driven both the s and non s versions of the boxster. The s is much more car. From owning both a 986s and now a 987s with the 3.2 (280hp), the 987 is everything the 986 was not. It's such a good car- I'm considering selling my 996 C4S.
To clarify- I'm liking the 987S as much as my 996 C4S. For different reasons though. They are similar, yet very different cars. I like the updated interior of the 987. The power on the 987S is enough, not as much as the 996, but the butt dyno in the boxster feels quicker than the 996. The 996 seems so stable, as if it's underpowered. It gives you a different feeling as a driver. The boxster feels more like a go-cart.
I posted this in the 996 area on purpose. Why post in the boxster area as it's biased and everyone will just say boosters rule. The point I was trying to make is that I have owned both and thetefore I have a qualified opinion and not an opinion that can only be one-sided. Many people make comments about the boxster while never driving one. Same goes for the 911.
I have a 981 Cayman S (almost the same as Boxster S) and a 996. I drive both on the street and have tracked both. The Cayman is faster, dual clutch, amazing interior, etc....but (stock) you reach the limits pretty quickly - it's got massive understeer, and some other issues (at the limit). It's all fixable - but it's a LOT of money and if something goes wrong - it's a REALLY expensive mistake, and racing always tears up a car.
The 996 is way more old school - but it's really fun, and you can do things the Cayman just won't do. You can throw it into a corner and stomp (and it can get away from you if you lose concentration for an instant). But if you can drive it well....you can drive anything. I just won the class championship this year in POC. And it gets way more thumbs-up out on the street.
So the answer is - have both... it's REALLY fun!
