Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

So due to both the db level and that the MOT will most probably not be a tick in the box next Year I have been scouting a new used exhaust.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have ruled out the exhaust system on my car, to loud, probably the mufflers are completely empty and the catalysts are really messed up 200cell aftermarket ones. So due to both the db level and that the MOT will most probably not be a tick in the box next Year I have been scouting a new used exhaust. Last week I came over this, a PSE system including catalysts for a good price. The winter is coming so I have some time to fix these ones up a bit before doing the swap. My intension is to have them Laser cleaned, so far so good. But the question is what I should do after the removal of the rust, or should I do anything? The catalysts I think I'll keep as is, surface rust will come for sure but that's ok. Then we have the mufflers, should I go all in and buy VHT primer and paint? Or only VHT primer or anything else that kind of protect them? Its a Sunday car living in a garage. There is this curing process on the VHT paint as I understand and I heard some comments regarding not so pleasant smell after painting the exhaust. One reason as well to do minor work is that I guess the inside of the mufflers might be even worse condition so the lifetime might not be forever.. Thanks in advance/J

POST 2Original post

I’m unfamiliar with laser cleaning. For a low-tech process, I’d sandblast with 60 grit Aluminum Oxide. Once the surface rust is removed, I think I’d have the parts shot with high-temperature powder coating. The PSE looks, externally, to be in decent shape, other than a uniform rusty surface. The issue you may have with using VHT Flameproof paint is you need a scuff sanded surface for the paint to adhere. Will this laser process leave a smooth finish?

POST 3Original post

Paint, not even Vht is going to anything to extend the lifetime of the back boxes. Don't waste any time, effort or money on it, is my advice. If they go, it will be due to the bottom folded flange rusting through or inside (metal next to) a weld will break resulting in an annoying rattle. The exterior will last, even without paint.

^^^^^ This. Look inside those cats to make sure they're whole. Clean up the mating surfaces, put the rig on the car, call it a day. Exhaust system is invisible on a 996. You'll love PSE by the way. Great sound.
