Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

Advice needed. Clutch is shot. 10 years ago and 20k miles ago a LN Engineering retrofit IMS bearing was installed. With the clutch out now, is it worth doing the IMS and RMS again? There are zero signs of wear. Oil is good. Oil pan is good. No RMS leaking. I am doing the UAOS while trans is dropped for clutch and flywheel. Im just torn on whether or not not to drop $1900 on the LN Engineering IMS Solution knowing the IMS has already been upgraded, albeit 10 years ago. Thanks.

The LN Retro has a stated life span and then it needs to be replaced. The LN Solution is permanent. I am on my 2nd LN Retro. Just replaced it 2 years ago. I have no issues with the Retro over the Solution because I have my indy drop the engine and go over it every couple of years which makes it easy to pop in another Retro. At 10 years old you should replace it.

POST 3Original post

The IMS is past the recommended replacement interval. How long do you plan to keep the car? If you plan to keep it for a long time, put in the IMS Solution and never worry about it.

POST 4Original post

I recently had mine replaced while working on the clutch. I had the original LN IMS bearing installed on my 2002 Targa back in 2012 so over 10 years ago. When my mechanic felt the bearing recently it had noticeable play and was clearly worn. I'm pretty sure I just dodged a bullet. Definitely get your bearing replaced while you are in there.

The Retro at $1k now, and failing as well? Hmmmm

POST 6Original post

If you purchased the retrofit from LN, I thought they had a program where they would upgrade you to the Solution at a decent discount. Not sure if that's in place but worth checking.

Indeed it is in place. https://imsrebates.com/ This also applies to any other replacement IMS bearing as well.

At the time that would have been a Classic Single Row. These had a 4 yr/50k service interval well knowing it had half the load capacity of a dual row bearing, which we assigned a longer service interval. However the worse thing for these cars is for them to sit or driven short distances. That's the hardest on all engine components, including the IMS bearing, as it's in service 24/7 with one ball carrying most of all the load based on the load the IMS bearing sees.
