Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I pull her into my shop and also msg the previous owner as in his spreadsheet, he had the AC filled like 3x times over 10 years.
Leading evidence: 'Fill like 3x times over 10 years' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check " and not allow the ac system' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

the system's leak has leaked enough to cause it to no longer "pass the system pressure check" and not allow the AC system to fully engage.

the small cans with gage cans don't work well, I bought a basic gage set from harbor freight and it worked great to fill the system,

Any other items I may be missing and any seals or parts yall recommend me to replace "while I'm in there"?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

the small cans with gage cans don't work well, I bought a basic gage set from harbor freight and it worked great to fill the system,
Hello again yall!
So I was driving home and suddenly, it was quite musty in the car, odd... *keeps driving.... gets REALLY musty* OK, somethings up. I then notice my temp gauge is up like when my AC is not on (aka hi speed fans are not on) and the AC is blowing hot musty-ness...? AC is def at fault here
I pull her into my shop and also msg the previous owner as in his spreadsheet, he had the AC filled like 3x times over 10 years. He says that its a small leak the car has where every few years he needs to recharge the system. I decide to investigate the engine bay and take out the air box for once. What I see is black goop flung from the AC compressor
dead. PO says the leak is prob the schrader valves at the firewall. But then I actually LOOK at the compressor. Oof. Black goop thrown from the AC pully
I made a quick post on the r/996 reddit and people say that this is prob one (or two, or three) of three things: 1. the AC clutch going out, 2. the compressor itself has seized, 3. the system's leak has leaked enough to cause it to no longer "pass the system pressure check" and not allow the AC system to fully engage.
I own a durameteric tool but have only used it once, but it has the function of "turn on air compressor". I am thinking I can first turn the car on, plug in the tool, and then try to manually override the system by pressing the "turn on AC compressor clutch" button and see what happens...
My thoughts are this: "If I turn on the compressor manually via the durameteric tool and see it engage, then the system is at low pressure and needs to have the leak found and repaired. Then, I need to figure out
why
there is that black goop and repair and buy parts accordingly. But first I should do everything I can do not open up the system. So first I should try and fix the clutch (if thats the issue). If its not the issue, then I need to replace the air compressor and recharge the system. While I have it uncharged, I aught to replace several AC components that could cause leaks"
Any other items I may be missing and any seals or parts yall recommend me to replace "while I'm in there"? (oh the classic "while youre in there routine -_- lol)
Thanks all!
Behind the pulley is a coil winding that makes the magnetism to pull in the A/C clutch. It looks like that coil melted.
It is possible to replace just the coil, if you can find a new one. It is fairly involved which is why nobody does it. They just replace the compressor.
Just my limited experience..
One of the leak fails on most auto-ac systems is the front seal around the input shaft.
If the clutch dies from shorting out it overheats the seal and the lube leaks out of the system.
The clutch should come off your can take it apart and clean it then clean up the front of the compressor, put the clutch back on.
Get a small can of R134 with leak detector in it, and one of the UV mini flashlights, you can get both at Oreillys most of the time.
By the time you finish filling it with the engine running you can see the leaks with the flashlight.
For a full service. the small cans with gage cans don't work well, I bought a basic gage set from harbor freight and it worked great to fill the system,
I made an adapter to make the small cans fit the gage setup. FWIW the difference between under filled and over filled is a
ounce or two, thats why the disposable cans with gages don't work well the scale on the gage is too course.
If yours is leaking around the compressor shaft you've lost lubricant as well as refrigerant, and the pump is likely going to fail at some point.
Sometimes its just worth it to have a shop do it because they can pump the system out and
also get the oil out...
Trick is finding a shop that wont Porsche tax you too hard on a task thats the same on all cars..
