When replacing the underbody splash shields on my new-to-me 996.2, I noticed a broken plastic piece that was attached to a metal bracket on the passenger side of the manual transmission with a T30 screw.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

When replacing the underbody splash shields on my new-to-me 996.2, I noticed a broken plastic piece that was attached to a metal bracket on the passenger side of the manual transmission with a T30 screw. Not sure what the purpose of the piece was, as not much was left. Does this piece extend down to provide support for the underbody shield (996-504-129-01) that extends across the car forward of the rear wheels? I have noticed that this shield sags ever so slightly at its rear, so maybe a bit of support there is needed. Or does the plastic piece in question serve some other purpose? Does anyone have a part number for this piece, or a diagram? I have searched online with no luck so far. Thank you in advance for any information provided!

Have you tried The Autolanta diagrams? Body > Linings for Underbody: http://www.autoatlanta.com/porsche-p...section=801-70

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for sharing. That is the diagram I ordered the underbody splash shields from, but I don't think it shows the plastic piece that attaches to the transmission. I checked transmission diagrams and could not find the piece on them either. Does anyone have underside photos showing the passenger side of their manual transmission? Next time I am underneath, I will shoot a photo and circle the location where the piece was mounted with a T30 underbody screw.

A good place to find photos are BAT auctions.

POST 5Original post

I was underneath mine yesterday right by the transmission and the only piece I can think of that matches your description is #16 on that diagram, which hugs the cross member support. a plastic piece connected to the transmission?

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thank you for sharing these photos. The plastic piece is further forward on the transmission than what they show though - about 12” forward of the crossmember that extends across the chassis, and 4-6” forward of the large underbody splash shield that extends across the car (the second rearmost shield - not the one that slips onto the crossmember). I have one more splash shield to install this weekend (the rearmost one), so I will take a photo of where the piece attaches when I am under there, and then share here.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Okay, I finally had a chance to get under the car and take some photos of the bracket and torx screw at the front of the transmission on the passenger side of the car. The plastic piece was attached to the black bracket with the torx screw. Does anyone know which diagram shows these parts, or have the part number for the plastic piece? I am thinking the plastic piece my have provided addition lift to the underbody splash shield immediately below, as mine sags very slightly - maybe a quarter of an inch, so probably not a big deal.

POST 9Original post

You are not missing a plastic piece... What has happened is that your metal bracket has been smashed and bent out of shape.. Bend it back down ( or replace) so that the screw goes directly upward.. The screw goes through the body liner to hold it up... If the hole is not there for the screw, you will have to locate the position and drill the hole for the screw to pass through... simple

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Now we are getting somewhere! Thank you for the information, Porschetech3! Makes sense now that my metal bracket is bent 90 degrees, and that the piece of plastic attached to it was from my former splash shield. I will probably try to just bend it back, and hopefully it doesn’t snap off when doing so. Another option is to leave it how it is oriented and then zip tie the splash shield to it. Do you know if the bracket is part of the transmission carrier/bracket, or it’s own piece? In either case, do you know the part number in case it breaks when bending? I couldn’t find the part on the Auto Atlanta diagrams.

POST 12Original post

The bracket is a mild steel, nothing fancy, it will not snap/break, .....trust me... Mild steel can even be reworked with a hammer and anvil if need be, but with the right leverage it will easily bend back in exact reverse...
