Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I just did my own oil change after acquiring my 996 C2. It's a 99 with ~100k km. I did a PPI and had the mechanic cut open the old filter and drop the sump for inspection and borescoping. His opinion was everything looked good. After about ~3,000km in driving I did my own oil change to put the car away for the winter and noticed there were brown specks in the oil filter. It wasn't much but there were a handful of specks that were more noticeable than others. Is this just normal wear? The car had a magnetic drain plug and I didn't notice much debris on it. Doesn't seem to be much metal material on the filter either. Curious on what your more experienced thoughts are. Also, I noticed at the bottom of the oil pan were some specks as well but not sure if it was just a dirty pan to begin with. Also, here are some photos from the PPI.

POST 2Original post

If they feel like a hard plastic then it's probably from the timing chain tensioner pads. Do you know what your cam deviation numbers are?

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Are the chain tensioner pads a typical wear item or should I be more concerned? I do not have the cam deviation numbers. I'll have to get that checked out. What constitutes a good cam deviation number (I'm reading +/- 6 degrees)? What causes the cam deviation to deviate from acceptable values (ie., is it stuff like wear on chain tensioners, the way you drive, etc)?

POST 4Original post

I had to have the pads replaced on my 99. All four were worn, resulting in brown bits in my filter. My cam deviations were affected as well, showing -1 and 0 after the change.

Yes, they are a typical wear item and require periodic replacment. Cam deviation numbers can help you determine how much wear you currently have (max spec is +/- 6 degrees). I would be concerned with anything over 4 degrees as the pads tend to wear at an accelerated rate as deviation increases.
