Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion
I had to replace the hinge on the fuel door and I had ordered a new cap with lanyard to go along with it since mine was broken.

OMG, it’s one of cheapest things to replace on these cars, spend the $25.

Suggestion
Unfortunately the new hinge covers up the lanyard mounting hole so I just kept using the old cap since I cant install the new one.

So with the new gas cap I continue to use the hook on the inside of the fuel filler door to hold the cap up and out of the way.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

When the gas cap lanyard broke on my Boxster's gas cap I just bought a new cap with a new lanyard. The cap seal was dried and starting to crack so it was not like I was throwing away a perfectly good gas cap. A gas cap leak was probably in my car's immediate future.
So with the new gas cap I continue to use the hook on the inside of the fuel filler door to hold the cap up and out of the way.
To me this is the best solution. No need to worry about getting fuel on the painted surface if you put the cap on the car or if you put the cap on the fuel pump no worry about driving off and leaving the cap at the gas station.
Cuda,
Since you drive an 03, maybe you should just hang it from the hook. Or, you could try looking at the fill tube before you close the door. Sorry for your loss.
Ah, Jay G. "Where do you put your fuel cap thread?" .... CHECK!
I usually put it in the door holder - lanyard or not. Never had a car with no door holder, so I don't have anything else to say.
I'm waiting for Jake to come up with The Fuel Cap Solution.
I would try to come up with one myself but I maybe wasting my time as Jake probably put several patents on it already and I don't want to get sued.
Who knows, it might be included in the addendum section of his upcoming book too.
I let it dangle now, as that hook really doesn't work for me or I haven't mastered the part where it stays in place.
Maybe Jake can have a few different products for this. The "solution" would be a more robust re-designed lanyard and gas cap with a serviceable gasket. Although this has to be replaced by an approved dealer and only after an exhaustive inspection.
Then a second option which would be a larger hook or better hook that holds the thing in place.
You can buy the leash as a separate item 955 044 200 05 "gas cap tether", but if it broke you likely have an older cap and the seal is drying out. When it cracks, you will get a gas cap error code, so you might as well get the cap assembly, it comes with the leash (but not the rivet, get one from the dealer or match the size at an auto parts store). The rivet is removed by pushing the center pin through with an eye-glasses screw driver.
I wonder if the Cayenne tether will fit the 996 cap.
Looks similar, but is the diameter the same?
I may get one to try, but my caps tether is n good shape and I have a new in box spare.
I also have spare replacement cap o-rings too.
My current cap is an aluminum-look one I picked up slightly used.
Not a cheap to replace part like the original.
Hey Tex , the replacement o-ring you have for the cap is it a Porsche part number ? Or a generic ? If generic what size and material is it made of ? Thanks
I just do the windshield thing. I had to replace the hinge on the fuel door and I had ordered a new cap with lanyard to go along with it since mine was broken. Unfortunately the new hinge covers up the lanyard mounting hole so I just kept using the old cap since I cant install the new one. I guess I could wallow out the offending part of the new hinge but Im not motivated. Maybe when I finally lose this cap.
They are replacements for VW/Audi caps and have been reported to fit our 996 caps.
They look like they’re the correct size but I haven’t had the need to confirm yet.
Here’s where they came from:
I just saw they have SAI Reseal kits and wire loom tape so I placed an order.
The 10% off code still works.
I’ll be resealing and re-greasing my spare SAI as soon as I’m cleared to lift more than 10 pounds by my doctor.
