May be a moot point since I want to put on Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4's rather than the currently installed Pilot 4Ss since I'd like to use this car to run up to Tahoe during the week to go ski.

The front tires need to be replaced asap, but the rears seem like they have plenty of tread left.

That or I'm looking at using the AutoSock which seems more attractive to me since IF I were to ever use them, these look like they would cause less damage to the inner wheel well if they got loose.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi All,
Just picked up a 1999 Carrera 4 I found though a 996 facebook group, and I'm now doing the typical new owner maintenance to ensure trouble-free motoring. I;m not new to the 996, (this is my second one) but I am new to the AWD C4.
The front tires need to be replaced asap, but the rears seem like they have plenty of tread left. I'm toying with the idea of just replacing the fronts for now to get another year or so of use out of the rears. Does anyone have experience with tire wear on the Carrera 4? Do they wear out the rears twice as fast as the fronts like the C2s do? I know the easy thing to do would be to simply put on all 4 new tires, but just hate to throw away money if the rears have plenty of life left.
Thoughts?
Cheers,
-Glenn
Rears do tend to wear faster in my experience as well. We use Continental tires for summers, and we have had Pirelli for winter. I like the Contis, but would not recommend the Pirellis.
Not your first 996, so assuming you checked the date codes on the tires regardless of tread life? Just throwing that out because when I purchase my 996 last year my tires looked great (lots of tread) but were 10 years old!
I quickly replaced all 4 on my C4. I can't speak to wear I'm not really there yet, pretty sure rears would still wear faster. So just comes down to if id use those same model of tires again, really wouldn't run a mismatch setup regardless of saving a few bucks.
Yeah thanks for the input, the front tires are 10 years old (and starting to show some cracking...
) Rears are ~5 years old, but have very little wear on them. From my understanding, at 6 years regardless of wear you should change em out. I was just wondering if I should just leave em on until their 6th birthday. May be a moot point since I want to put on Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4's rather than the currently installed Pilot 4Ss since I'd like to use this car to run up to Tahoe during the week to go ski.
All that being said, I have a bigger problem on my hands: P.O. lost the lug nut key and the tire shop doesn't have any way of removing the wheels without damaging the rims. Time to use the search function in the forums and call the nearest Porsche dealer...
Update: Called the dealer in Rocklin, they said to bring it by and hopefully its one of the keys they have on hand. From there I'll have the correct part number to order a new one. Just have to limp it to the dealer on front tires that were around when Limewire was still a thing...
Update: Ditched the old tires and installed Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4 tires on all four corners about two months ago. So far they've been ok, haven't had much opportunity to push them hard yet. Something weird happened when I first got them installed: Immediately after having them installed, the front right seemed out of balance. So a week or two later I took the car back to the tire shop. Apparently there was sand/grit in the rim that was causing the balance machine to be confused about where to put the weight...??? I have 993 Turbo I hollow spoke wheels, and apparently there is a void between the inner and outer rim that can only be accessed by removing the valve stem. (See cutout below from a google search) Once the tire guy removed the valve stem, he use compressed air to blow the sand out of this hole.
Anyone else experience this problem with the 993 hollow spoke wheels? Is this casting sand that came loose? I wish I took a photo of what came out, but it just looked like a grey fine sand. No idea how it got in there.
So here in California, we are required to "Carry Chains" regardless of AWD and M+S tires on mountain roads in snow conditions. I'm now on the hunt for something that I can keep in my car, even though I don't plan on ever using them. Contacted a local Pewag rep, and he recommends "Pewag Snox Pro"

AutoSock
Anyone here try any of these?
The Auto-socks are awesome on ICE, on soft snow a set of DWS Conti's/Michelin X-Ice/Fulda's etc would likely beat them..
But what your really worried about is if they are forcing folks to put them on.. Then the socks won't beat stuff up.
There is no substitute for chains if its that bad out.. And my 911 likely isn't my first choice in that case..
Remember your not in 4wd till the back wheels spin and the viscous coupler heats up..
