I also changed the oil/filter because with the amount of fuel that was being dumped into that cylinder there was definitely a risk of contamination, and misted the cylinder with oil prior to startup to mitigate any fuel wash.

However, after inspecting the cylinder 5 and 6 plugs again, it's clear that number 5 is still soaked with liquid fuel and number 6 is normal.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi All, Got an interesting problem I'm hoping someone can shed some light on: I'm working on a 99 Carrera that has been experiencing a misfire on Cylinder 5. My friend--the owner, who was driving it--was running along and noticed a loss of power. In the time it took him to pull over, the check engine light came on (flashing) and the car started billowing smoke from the bank 2 exhaust. He had the car towed and the codes I pulled showed a Cylinder 5 misfire damaging to the catalytic converter (codes 54, 67, 62 and 75). The car is not burning oil, but rather an excess of fuel--to the point that straight gasoline literally spurts out of the tail pipe at idle. I swapped the coil and plug from cylinder 5 to cylinder 6 to see if the code would follow, but the car is no longer throwing any codes (no check engine light). However, after inspecting the cylinder 5 and 6 plugs again, it's clear that number 5 is still soaked with liquid fuel and number 6 is normal. I also checked the resistance of the coil packs and they are both within spec., so I'm fairly confident that isn't the issue. I'm thinking checking the number 5 injector is the next step but I'm hoping perhaps someone may have some insights that I may be missing--anything helps at this point. Thanks very much, Ian

POST 2Original post

Plugs and coil packs are common issues for these cars. I just replaced all my fuel injectors as preventative maintenance. Not uncommon for those to go bad either.

Thank you for the reply! Just an update, I pulled the number 5 injector and blew into the end and I was able to blow right through it. Unless Im mistaken, these injectors should be closed when they arent energized so Im thinking that this one being (apparently) stuck open is causing the flooded condition

POST 4Original post

I'm impressed you got injector number 5 out by itself. I had trouble getting to it after the intake manifolds were off!

Thank you 🙏🏼 I just changed all 6 injectors in my personal 997 a couple of months ago so Ive got the technique down 😄

POST 6Original post

Did you get it fixed? I'm guessing you are waiting on finding injectors. There has been a shortage.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yep, still waiting on the new injectors to arrive. Im replacing all 6 because the car is sitting at 100k and its definitely time. Ill update this thread once I get everything back together

POST 8Original post

Save the other 5 and send them out for cleaning.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just an update in case anyone is interested: I dropped the new injectors in and the car runs perfectly so that stuck number 5 was definitely the culprit. I also changed the oil/filter because with the amount of fuel that was being dumped into that cylinder there was definitely a risk of contamination, and misted the cylinder with oil prior to startup to mitigate any fuel wash. Luckily my buddy caught it and had the sense to have the car towed before any really serious damage occurred.
