Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

As part of the winter slumber process, on the weekend I pulled the spark plugs on the right side of the car with the intent to replace them and assess the coil condition. After pulling the 3 coils and respective plugs, I realized I ordered the incorrect spark plug replacements. I then realized that the coils are the newer style and that the spark plugs looked basically new. I have owned the car since fall 2018. Due to covid, maybe driven 2000 miles since purchase. I have most service records but the coil/spark plug replacement didn't appear anywhere. Since the car was purchased at a Porsche dealer and coils/plugs looked very new, I'm assuming that they were likely replaced as part of their dealer prep and so would not appear on any history. I have a few questions: 1. The coils have a 997 part number. So, is it correct to assume that they were replaced? Car is an '03. There is no way that an '03 would have a factory 997 part is there? (no AT on engine btw - car has 45000 miles (76000 km). 2. Any advice, recommendations, complaints on how to complete plug 4 (rear most on passenger side)? I got it done. I did not remove exhaust or even the wheels (I have a 4 post lift). It took me 3 hours to do that one plug. I ended up going into the engine bay to get a bit more slack for the electrical connector. Let's just say my fat small hands struggled to plug it in. No way to do it with the coil bolted to the engine. How bad is the other side to do? And, I did get it all back together, drained the oil through a sieve. Oil had 700 km's on it. No particles in sieve. I washed it. Dumped fuel stabilizer in the fuel, drove it around for 20 minutes to get it to operating temperature, filled the tank and parked it until next year.

POST 2Original post

The cylinder layout is 1, 2, 3 on the drivers side from front to back. 4, 5, 6 is the passenger side, bank 2, on the passengers side. The one you are talking about is #6. Which I thought was the hardest one to get in and out. I went to NAPA and bought regular bolts with a standard head. Then used a ratcheting box wrench to tighten it up. The e-torx tools I have are too big to get back there. I did not feel compelled to use the "correct" hardware. Since then I found an e-torx 10mm ratcheting box wrench on Amazon for about $20.00. It's on my Christmas list this year. Best,

Ok, so #6 then. thanks for the clarification. The part that I struggled with was not the coil install. It was completely related to getting my hand in there to attach the electrical harness to the coil. I struggled to detach it and really struggled to attach it. There was no way I could attach it when it was bolted down. The muffler support was in the way. I ended up attaching it after many, many tries when the coil was in the spark plug hole about 95% of the way and managed to position the electrical plug so I could blindly press it down and listen for the click. I'm thinking that with the bumper and mufflers removed it may make it easier but the muffler bracket doesn't come off so the only help would be the added light and potentially maybe getting at it from a different angle.

POST 4Original post

Taking the heat shields off seemed to let me get at mine. But I have a ton of swivel/extensions etc.

POST 5Original post

I did my coils and plugs with the bumper and mufflers removed. I probably spent the same time cutting off the terribly corroded exhaust hardware as I would have struggled to get everything installed. So it was kind of a toss up. At least with the bumper and mufflers removed, I was able to look at the plugs/coils straight on which made things much much easier, plus I now have new exhaust hardware and also did the Gundo hack.
