The opening for the cigarette lighter is smaller than the usb charger, so I used an exacto knife (instead of the dremel that is commonly shown) to slowly widen the opening, this allowed me to get a very tight friction fit.

This was beneficial, since the screw on locking nut is substantially bigger than the opening in the frame, since the fit is so tight, I chose not to use the locking nut.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm replacing the cigarette lighter with a USB chargin port and I have a question regarding the wire. There's a red, brown and blue wire. Does anyone know what the blue wire is for? Also, since the cigarette lighter is always on, will the illuminated USB cause any battery drain issues? I'm assuming that the drain will be negligible, but you know what happens when you assume . For longer term storage the car is on a trickle charger.

POST 2Original post

Not sure which is which but the 3 wires should be, Power +, Ground -, and illumination + I think.

POST 3Original post

changing that out is a lot of work to go through when this gets you pretty much to the same place. https://www.bergvillfx.com/products/usb-chargerlighter

POST 4Original post

Quotes source post: 17784747

Red wire is power, brown is ground and blue is illumination. I'm not sure about power draw because my car goes on the battery maintainer if it's going to sit for more than a few weeks. Since I also added a USB charging port to the inside of the center console, I ended up putting the cigarette lighter socket back in because I still have stuff that might need it on a road trip or something. And now I have random plugs that I use just to see if a passenger notices.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the feedback. Install was very easy, I did find the video below helpful in the disassembly of the cigarette lighter if anyone else is considering doing this. I added male spade plugs onto the usb charger and just plugged them into factory harness live and ground slots. All in, it took maybe 20-30 minutes. You Tube

POST 7Original post

As a heads up you guy might want to opt for the newer QC 3.0 or PD type chargers for you modern phones or tablets... .they allow for much faster charging than the 2.1A USB types of chargers. New Phones or tablets won't charge fast on the older 2.1A USB chargers. As another thing to know... watch these chargers because the LED lighting and also the way they charge can often drain you Car's batteries by adding a decent parasitic drain on you system. So wire to a keyed-on circuit so it is just not staying "on" all the time or you may find you battery draining fast. Yes I know LED and these chargers are not supposed to draw much but we tested a few and the draw was significant and a continual load on the battery causing higher parasitic draw. Just an FYI

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 17788715

Thanks for your reply, the one that I installed has 3.0A and 2.4A ports. Is there an easy way to measure the draw. Right now its on a trickle charger so no real concern, but come next spring that will change.

POST 9Original post

One of my winter projects is adding a USB-C PD port into one of the horseshoe switch blanks. Playing around with this one for now: Amazon Amazon I've pulled ~30W from it charging a Pixelbook when hooked up via a benchtop supply. Parasitic draw is ~40mA according to that same supply, but it'll be wired up to the switched power on the telephone connector so not a concern for me. I'll add some pics when I get the housing finished.

POST 11Original post

There are a few ways to check this , but if you Google "how to check parasitic draw/drains..." then you will see quite a few Vids come up on Youtube on how to do this. I will try to find one and post here.. but I think you can test the unit alone with a small battery by itself and a multimeter. It only requires a simple Multi-Meter in-line on the negative side with the setting on Amps....but check the video they will explain it much better. The kicker is the Modern phone and tablets can pull quite a bit of energy, and I'm not certain those chargers do not have a shut-off so even after the phone stops drawing for its charge. I think some may keep trying to act like a charger since they are simple charging devices. I have not checked this personally but I remember on two of my Cars would lose like almost a volt over night if I left a phone charging... and that is massive when a phone is about 5000mah on a larger phone and should not be draining a Car Battery so much overnight. But it might be the model of USB charger also. There are so many out there.
