I have installed an ACER Racing titanium lock bolt on each rim now as an impediment to the midnight spares crowd (along with 4 x standard titanium lug bolts).

On a whim, I wondered if the Columbus tire doode had torqued up the lug nuts to the 130 NM I requested, so I grabbed my trusty torque wrench and checked all the lug bolts.

If anything the brake rotor could have worn oddly in the time the 5th bolt (looks like it was the coded locking bolt, right?) was missing but since you feel no vibrations or pulsing of the brake pedal the brake disk is fine too.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

On the justification of COVID risk mitigation, I have just completed a 4,500 mile 'work trip' in my (new to me) Porsche 996 C4 Cabriolet, from Los Angeles, California to Columbus, Indiana - return. As a side note for those wondering if long trips are doable in a (roadworthy) Porsche 996, I can emphatically state a resounding yes! 3-days out (via I-40) and 2 days back (via I-70)... over 30 hours at the wheel in each direction. I can say that I found this 22 y.o. veteran to be more comfortable and safer than my 2019 Volvo XC-60, which is arguably a safe comfortable road trip machine! Moreover, the journey through spectacular scenery was interspersed with sublime fun on some of the winding sections of the journey... But I digress... One of the casualties of the I-40 (now known to me as the 'cobblestone hwy' for its truck-destroyed surface) was my set of tires. A whole other story there with a blowout at 85mph outside Springfield, Missouri where I learned that my tires that appeared in good shape with plenty of tread at commencement were actually 19 years old! Lesson learned number one, and of some relevance to this post, as it necessitated re-shodding, en-route, hence 3-day outbound trip. With new rears fitted in Springfield and new front's fitted when I reached Columbus, I was finally able to refine the feel of the ride from the cacophony of various vibrations. One trend started to emerge on the return journey, a nasty vibration that increased markedly when breaking. The source appeared to be front left and was noticeably worse with speed. It also worsened as the journey continued. Upon return to LA, I scoured this forum for tests and diagnosis of the vibration... I assumed that there was a high spot on my rotor where hot brakes had come to a stop with the pads engaged, or rust had built up after washing the car in Columbus without driving it to dry the rotors. On a whim, I wondered if the Columbus tire doode had torqued up the lug nuts to the 130 NM I requested, so I grabbed my trusty torque wrench and checked all the lug bolts. To my dismay, the 5th bolt appeared to rotate freely without any resistance. I got down on my knees to take a closer look, and lo and behold: daylight! No lug bolt! My assumption: I must have spat the bolt on the trip home... should have checked the torque after the tires were changed, instead of trusting the tire doode. Then I pulled up some photos of the car and zoomed in on the right front wheel. It turned out this wheel lug bolt had been missing as far back as Sep (and that was just the last photo record). This got past my Indy mechanic a Stuttgart-trained legend who was the head mechanic for the Hungarian Porsche racing team... Unbelievably (don't start me) it got past the Columbus tire doode who didn't even bother with a ' Sir, we noticed you only have four lug bolts fitted on the front left wheel". And of course, noting my own culpability as the 'nut that holds the wheel', it got past my fastidious en-route checks, including several weeks of daily tire pressure checks after a nail punctured one of my brand new, expensive tires in Columbus. I have now fitted bright, shinny ACER Racing titanium lug bolts to replace the rusty bolts lost in those deep, dirty lug wells on the original turbo twist rims. Today, I executed a brake break-in to resurface (?) the rotors, and can report that all vibrations are now resolved with brake performance and handling like I've never enjoyed. I do worry that more permanent damage may have occurred to the rims after so many miles at highway speed (and well above) running on four lug bolts. I will leave this for my Indy mechanic's assessment in 10 days when the post trip oil change and service is conducted. The moral of this story (borne out by the photo from September that leaves me scratching my head at how I, and so many others, missed the bleeding obvious)... if you experience a vibration that shakes the wheel, especially during braking... and it increases slowly over time. Before you worry about your brakes, or suspension... gentlemen (and ladies) check your nuts!

POST 2Original post

Your wheel is fine. If anything the brake rotor could have worn oddly in the time the 5th bolt (looks like it was the coded locking bolt, right?) was missing but since you feel no vibrations or pulsing of the brake pedal the brake disk is fine too.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks Hardtailer! Appreciate the reassurance... Based on 5 x standard lug bolts throughout the other three wheels, I suspect the lost bolt was also standard. I have installed an ACER Racing titanium lock bolt on each rim now as an impediment to the midnight spares crowd (along with 4 x standard titanium lug bolts). Hopefully Titanium is not a bad choice for durability - there seems to be mixed opinions on its suitability for wheel lug bolts. But at the very least—with their corrosion resistance—I won't ever miss a lost lug bolt on future walk-arounds.
