Since I didn't know what I was doing, I set the "> MPH" value to 20, so evidently that's a speed warning feature.
Leading evidence: 'Set "> mph" value' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check tonight' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. I recall someone used their Durametric to reprogram the "Manuell" to "Manual".

Understand a code reader can see the code / reset the light, but my el-cheapo harbor freight reader says everything is fine.

I found a thread on the 6speed forum that indicates it can do all the above plus reset the service interval timer.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi, All;
I just brought home my first 996, a 2001 Yellow (is there an official name for this color?) Carrera 2. I've searched the FAQ and the "things you didn't know about your 996" threads, and found out some great information, but not all that I need.
1. Airbag light came on (of course) after I took possession, on the ride home. Understand a code reader can see the code / reset the light, but my el-cheapo harbor freight reader says everything is fine. Must you have a Durametric reader, or are there other Porsche-compatible tools that will work?
2. On my 4th drive of the day, (as in, this didn't happen previously) whenever I make a 90 deg turn with or without turn signals, I get two beeps. Then silence until my next 90 deg turn. ???
3. Is there a great book that covers owner-manual type content? I've seen "The Essential Companion" referenced, but don't know if it's got much basic stuff like what's that weird little a/c button on the right side between an up and down arrow?
4. Is a Porsche dealer the only source for a new key (have only one, and it doesn't have a FOB or lock/unlock buttons on it). Just has a pushbutton that turns on light.
5. Where is the manual spoiler actuation button?
6. Over the fan speed bar, the word "Manuell" appears. Is the car somehow set up for Spanish (don't laugh - dead serious!). Can I change that to Manual?
Thanks, All; still haven't wiped the grin off my face...
Welcome. I guess I am the first one to chime in here.
1. You need a real Durametric scanner or emulator. The cheap-o code readers can read the OBD-II stuff but can't interact with the ABS/SRS system. The seat belt buckle receivers have been the culprit each time it has happened to me. Twice on the 996, once on the Boxster. The Durametric can also help you pinpoint which side.
2. No idea
3. The Porsche Factory Manual is a great start. Search eBay or get a .pdf version.

4. You can buy the key and fob from other locations and have the key portion migrated/copied. Pairing to the car has to come from the dealer.
5. It is a black button on the fuse panel by the clutch. Please don't drive around with it locked up. It embarrasses us all.
6. Can't change that. Manuell is German for manually.
Welcome!
As far as I know, the dealer is the only source for a properly coded replacement key. The frequencies are coded to the VIN.
The manual spoiler actuator switch is in the driver's side foot-well unless a previous owner had rerouted it to another location.
I've never been able to switch "Manuell" into "Manual". Pretty sure it's German, so you may have to just put up with it and enjoy the quirks of P-Car ownership.
Greetings!
Your car's color is likely Speed Yellow.
Yes, an Indy can program your key if they have the right equipment. Mine does, but the cost was the same as the Dealer.
Oh...and the grin? Get used to it!
I recall someone used their Durametric to reprogram the "Manuell" to "Manual". Personally, if I could have figured out how to do that, it would have been something like, "Howdy Gonzo".
Welcome. I'm going to give it a go here...
Your factory color is most likely Speed Yellow. There is a options sticker under the frunk hood that has your color code on it and you can do a search. As a matter of fact try to decode all option codes so you know what you have.
1. For airbag, use Durametric.
2. No clue. Weirdest thing I've heard. It may be a short or something. What kind of beep is it and where exactly is it coming from? If it only happens on turns, it means something is moving (a wire) due to centrifugal force and touching something else.
3. Just buy a used manual off of E-Bay. The arrow up is the defrost vents. The weird button is intended to look like an air vent meaning center vents that hit your face. The arrow down is feet vents.
4. No. You can buy keys and key fobs from the web. Do a search. Much cheaper but one caveat that the key fob still has to be programmed by the dealer or someone who has the equipment.
5. At the bottom by the fuse box by the driver left foot.
6. Leave it alone. It's like "UHR" in the BMW clocks which stands for time in German.
Have fun and search. Lots of good info here.
I have an Autel Al619 that cost $140 on ebay. It does SRS and ABS in addition to OBDII. If I recall correctly it works on the 996. I can check tonight for sure. Obviously not as good as a Durametric but works on other brands.
Thanks for the responses so far, folks! Yeah, after I posted the query I found the spoiler up/down button. I thought it was a retainer for the plastic panel!
Anyone have the iCarsoft POR II reader? I found a thread on the 6speed forum that indicates it can do all the above plus reset the service interval timer.
Now I'm getting concerned about the beeps on turns. I'm not really going anywhere close to speed; was in a 20 MPH school zone, for centrifugal force to be much of an issue.
On Saturday, I pulled up to a brand new 991 Targa, spoiler up. Guy still had the temp tag on his license plate. My top was down and his targa top was, well whatever a targa top is when its not up. I told him nice car and he just gave me a cursory wave without really looking over.
I then told him his spoiler must be broken because its in the up position. He gave me a bit of a dirty look, then went back to ignoring me.
I will not be ignored.
"Speed yellow" is also called "Look at me, I'm having a crisis!" yellow.
Hi, All;

1. Airbag light came on - need Durametric.
2. Beeps = horn? Horn bushings are worn out.
3. It makes air come out of the dash vent. Notice the symbol is the dash vent?
4. Keys are available on eBay - but dealership must program for you. $$.
5. Where is the manual spoiler actuation button - by your left ankle (assuming your car is left-hand drive)
6. I see your Spanish is almost as good as your German. No, the HVAC is not multi-lingual.
Thanks, All; still haven't wiped the grin off my face... - Me neither, and it's been 3 years.
I hope this is not against the rules, as i dont consider this to be a competitive forum, rather complimentary. If its not cool to cross post please feel free to remove this or let me know and I will delete it.

^ You and your damn helpful, on-topic posts need to get the hell out of here JTT. Yeah, scr-- you, your cross-posts and the horse you rode in on.
Now, everybody look at me - I've got a guards red turbo!
EDIT: And my words aren't covering up my avatar like the rest of you noobs.
Double Edit: And I think Schnell is right on the horn - very common to have the rubber spacers under the airbag wear out. Search on here for horn not working threads and I believe you can buy cheap rubber o-rings at Home Depot to fix that.
Well, I found out what the beeps were. I didn't notice them until I was trying to figure out the display options like MPG, avg MPH, temp, etc. Since I didn't know what I was doing, I set the "> MPH" value to 20, so evidently that's a speed warning feature. I only noticed it on corners because, of course, as I'm pulling out from turning a corner, I pass thru 20 MPH.
Yes, Speed Yellow. Options tag extremely hard to read; looks like it's been washed a few times (the label, that is...).
Guess I'll have to join that other forum as well; can't download without logging-in.
Speed Yellow = Crisis Yellow? Well, yeah I guess you can say that. All my life, everything I've owned has been a compromise. Had a 944 back in the 90's cuz I couldn't afford a 911. Restored a 1980 'Vette because I couldn't afford a '69-'72. Well, I'm retired now, and sold an airplane I built and flew. Finally got my 911. OK, yeah, so that's a compromise, too, because I'd really like an SC, but I figure this is the "last hurrah", so I'm smiling and happy.
One other question: Do these engines "load up"? Occasionally when I'm at a light and go to pull away, as I blip the throttle it seems like it skips one beat, then everything progresses normally. Not all the time; haven't been able to correlate it to the length of time sitting at the light.
Whenever I see it on the street below 35MPH, I absolutely laugh at whoever is behind the wheel.
The driver took half a minute to reach down by their feet in an attempt to look cool.
Unless it is at a track or above 75, having it up serves no other purpose than the driver trying to look cool, which is inherently dorky. IMHO.
Mine went out at the Amelia Island Concourse Cars and Coffee. I'm driving onto the golf course with the stupid horn beeping at every movement of the wheel. Uber embarrassing.
I could imagine the comments about the douchebag Porsche owner announcing his presence.
I pulled the fuse before I left.
For the key, you have to get a fob with the programming tag/number. If you just get a used key it will only be able to start the car, but you can't get the remote to work
Well that brings up a good point. I really have a chuckle when we're crawling around on the freeway at 5-10mph and I reach down and put the spoiler up.
=)
