Suggestion
Sometimes disconnecting for 30min-to hour isn't long enough to deplete the power stored in the capacitors ( especially super-capacitors) , they can stay charged for hours/days.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
40 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

I have a 03 911 with tiptronic, it has a code flashing once started tiptronic emergency
then says drive to workshop. It only drives in 2nd gear it seems.
has anyone fought this before, the car came like this got a good deal. But owner was unaware of the issues it has just been sitting for along time. Owner is a friend so hes trustworthy.
could it just be low on fluid
or is it usually a electrical issue like the conductor plate.
I have a 03 tip also, had that happen after I serviced the Trans fluid/filter. Only way to fix it was flat bed it to the dealership. Durametric can't reset the tip, dealer only. The cause was trans fluid seeped into the electrical connector to the trans.
did the fluid clear the code or did you have to reset.
also does anyone know where the tip control module is on a 2003 cabriolet. I wanted to verify it has power.
On the side behind the passenger's door.
If the dash lights for gear selection work the Tip control has power, those lights are driven by CANBUS from the Tip control module.
You probably need a conductor plate.
[QUOTE=b3freak;17252958]Had this problem with another vehicle where the main TCU connector was dirty with oil. Cleaned the connector, reattached it, and it worked again.[/QUOTE
Is this the BIG connector that goes right into the tranny?
Did you have to clear any codes after to get rid of message?
Dude, it looks like you found the source of your problem. I'd clean those wires up, match them up properly, and solder them back together. Also, use a heat gun and shrink tubing to shield it from moisture and corrosion.
Good luck... and, report back the results.
repaired the wire unfortunately still in tiptronic emergency mode stuck in 2nd gear I believe .
1. I wonder if its just low on fluid.
2. maybe I need to disconnect and clean the connector to the tiptronic?
3. maybe I need to have the dealer reset it?
That's good news you got the wires repaired quickly. I agree, just like other trouble codes that the car will display, for it to "reset" itself, you need a Porsche scanner like the PIWIS or Durametric to do a full refresh of the system.
While you're waiting, I'd do a complete check of wires underneath the car. Rodents are notorious for chewing into the wires. Apparently, they love the taste of the shielding.
Also, can hurt to clean the connectors too. Just make sure you use the right stuff.

Amazon
took it to dealer this morning,
225$ to look at, I told them to top off tranny fluid and reset codes, also check connector at tranny.
They said they will look at it tommorrow.
cross your fingers, I fully except they scan codes and say we will need to look into it more and ignore my directions. Then quote me 1000$ 1000$ for repairs
I Hope Im wrong we will see
I look forward to hearing what they find beyond what you discovered. Did they ask what the problem was? Did you tell them about the cable repair too?
I wish you all the best!
we will see
here is the response today
The tech checked the fault codes and they coming up for the 2nd & 3rd shift solenoids. He physically checked and found the transmission wiring to the connector has been repaired badly and he believes that is the cause. He is recommending correcting that wiring repair first and then recheck the system. The wire repair would be $690.00.
so I got a fault code check and they want 699$ to repair one 18 gauge wire. I temporarily fixed it with crimp connectors so I dont think that will make a difference.
i
i asked them to check the fluid and the main tranny connector and they didnt
I will tell them again tommorrow
Did you not resolder and shield the cut wires in the image you provided?
If this is a Porsche dealership service center, that will either want to replace the entire cable or in many cases, they'll solder a new connector on the multi-core cable instead of just repairing the individual lines.
If I'm not mistaken wasn't there at least two broken wires in your transmission cable?
I strongly recommend NOT using crimp couplers, but instead crimp off the ends of each copper line, solder, and shield with heat shrink tubing. Then wrap an outer shield around the repaired bundle for added protection.
yeah the wire was so short I cut it on other side of bundle and crimped around connector temporarily. I will solder and heat shrink.
there is another one that is abraided i will just tape that up as the copper is fine no broken strands.
Well Im gonna go pick it up today. They said to remove the main connector clean it and check top of tranny fluid its 900$ I said get car ready Ill come pick it up. Ill jack it up tonight and remove that connector and clean it myself.
I think its time to buy a durametric
Seriously, same thing on my car when I serviced it. How is the trans fluid getting into the connector? Only thing I can see is that somehow when you fill it with the correct hose fluid comes out the top if you pump it fast. That's the only theory I have.
Anyone else have some ideas?
Tip is a Daimler (Mercedes-Benz) transmission. They suffer the same problem. Through capillary action the oil inside the gearbox gets past the material surrounding the individual terminals/contact pins and continues al the way into the loom.
In case of some Mercedes it finds it way into the TCU.
So I picked up car today,
took it home noticed the crimp I fixed was disconnected. I guess I did a poor job(it was late)
so I re crimped it nice and tight, I will solder this in the future. Or buy a new harness.
I then removed the main connector jamming my arm in there and the release tab felt kinda loose. I sprayed it with contact cleaner and put it back, really tight on release tab.
I ordered a conductor plate and fluid to change it out.
I went ahead and ordered a Mercedes 722.6 conductor plate , filter and gasket. The filter looks different might not be compatible with Porsche pan. I also ordered 5 liters of pentosin ATF 1
Anyone have any tips I should look out for. Were you able to remove the screw into the conductor plate receptacle plug to pull it out?
im not sure if I can get a ratchet up there as Im flying blind I cant see it.
So to wrap this up, I bought a icarsoft v1.0 POR unit. I took a risk but it worked. Under tiptronic it showed all the fault codes and I was able to reset. No more fault codes no more limp mode. Everything shifts in manual and drive as it should.
I was very pleasantly surprised by the function of this scanner extremely user friendly and cheap.
Not to be a killjoy or anything, but disconnecting the battery would have cleared the fault codes and got it out of limp mode.
No money wasted on the scanner though, it will pay for itself in notime if you are any type of DIY'er at all (which you obviously are).
Glad your Tiptronic issue was a simple broken wire !!!
This is what usually fails on the 722.6 tip, it goes between the outside connector and the trans. Very common on the Mercedes forums. The O-rings fail with age.

for me that didnt work I disconnected the battery 2-3 times for 30 minutes or longer. But the icarsoft definately identified the codes then cleared them once the fault was repaired.
Sometimes disconnecting for 30min-to hour isn't long enough to deplete the power stored in the capacitors ( especially super-capacitors) , they can stay charged for hours/days. The quick way us Pro's do it ( called a "hard reset") is to totally remove/disconnect battery ( I suggest remove battery from the car for anyone who is not a Pro), then touch positive and negative cables together. This depletes all power that can keep KAM and RAM memory alive.
I have had to use the "hard reset" technique on some cars where the "learned values" were corrupt, and normal reset with PIWIS would not clear them..
As an electrical engineer you would want to drain all power more slowly, like using a "resistor shunt",.but those of us "in the field " who have been doing this for decades know it causes no harm..What do you think happens when the battery shorts out ?
Still, wow...you risk soooooooooo much with all the sensitive electronics in our cars.
You're justification about being in the field, I've been in the "field" my whole life troubleshooting circuits.
Drain it slow to be safe.
Well, I agree with you in theory , but the caps that need to be drained are micro-farads and only hold micro-amperes of power. Anything you use to drain them will zap the power from them instantly, no different than touching the cables..
