However I don't know what parts that I'll need to order though, and the various threads all recommend different parts from one another.

You'll need more parts than what you have listed depending on how far you are going with it & what else you want to replace "while you are in there".

You can and should replace all 3 tensioners while doing your rebuild.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Let me start by saying that I have searched, but only retained enough to confuse me.
I did an oil change last weekend (just rolled 90k) and found the indicating tiny black and brown/phenolic colored bits in the filter media. There were some tiny ferrous bits stuck to the magnetic plug, but like a ****, I binned them without thinking or having a good look. I've not dropped the pan yet, but I think it's pretty obvious that at minimum its time to do a timing service. However I don't know what parts that I'll need to order though, and the various threads all recommend different parts from one another.
My shop Forman, give me the okay to drop the motor and trans and store the car and drive train on site. I was given the okay to work on it as time allows and on my own time. Since I'm in need of a new clutch and flywheel; I was planning to tackle the IMS tensioner/paddle while I'm there & if its feasible, without a full on engine rebuild.
What parts do I need to source, and what other bits should I consider replacing, since the unit will be out?
Also any special or Porsche/996 specific tools that I'll need?
Thanks in advance.
Thanks. I did search and I know this is a common issue. Whats confusing is that in each of the 100+ threads, each one is more about differing opinions on the cause of debris in the oil and differing opinions on what material it is. And typically Rennlist; there always seems to be a multitude of posts in these threads of who has the bigger proverbial d***, and arguing whos right on IDing the material type. Its exhausting and not very helpful. I just need a list of parts and tools needed. Im not even asking for part numbers or sources; just what is needed to do the job.
changing the pads on the timing chain advance mechanism for the cams does not required splitting the cases, only removing the cams. If you wants to change the pad on the IMS to
Cams or the IMS to crank chains then you do have to split the cases.
Alright everyone are there any other parts that I should aquire? Am I correct that unless I opt to split the case, I won't need the IMS ramp and tensioner?
Thanks to Katie at Pelican Parts for the assistance.
Oh god! Please keep reading more and if needed take notes. I don't think you know what you are doing yet. How much engine wrenching have you done before and how far did you go into the engines?
IMO.... take a step back, purchase the DVD series linked below and start from there. You can get in over your head REALLY quick with these engines..
https://lnengineering.com/focus-on-m...embly-dvd.html
Where in PA are you located?
To answer your question;
You can not replace PN 996-105-165-55 or 996-105-166-51 without splitting the case.
PN 999-707-344-40 come with the new tensioners.
I dont see a need to replace 9A7-008-365-00... just the O-rings.
You can and should replace all 3 tensioners while doing your rebuild.
You'll need more parts than what you have listed depending on how far you are going with it & what else you want to replace "while you are in there".
I don't think a $600 DVD is needed to change the timing chain pads. Drop the sump and look for debris. That will give you a good indication of how to proceed. Feel free to post pics of what you find.
I was a Porsche tech factory trained on the M96 engines and I still bought the DVD to replace my timing chain pads... I took away a ton of "Golden Nuggets" from this series.
U cant get to the pressure pin either so dont buy. Get the 2 small chains for the variocams. U may want to think about injectors, coils, tubes snd plugs. If u search my screen name u will find several posts on parts and pics of the job as i dud this a month ago. For tools u need this, i got my on ebay for $99 but most r $150.
oh yea 6 cam plugs too
Thanks for the suggestion. As I previously stated in the opening post; I'm just unsure what parts I need to amass, thats why I reached out to the forum. Im located in Montgomery Co.
Its a fairly complicated proceedure the first time u do it. He just wants u to be prepared as if u dont have a good handle on the job u can ruin a motor. A Bentley service manual and the Fastener Torque book from ln engineering r a big help too.
i would pull the motor too. In the car is possible but not recommended
Thanks. This is the type of help I was looking for.
General statements: The parts list depicted was provided based on my call asking for a price quote to perform a timing job on my '99 C2. I explained I didn't know what parts I need, but I have verified cam deviation, tensioner bleed down and chain slap on startup. The parts list I posted is what was emailed to me as being needed.
I do not plan to do the IMS pad (I think thats the number you posted) as I have no desire whatsoever to split the case; I think it was included as I didn't specify not to include it. Since I've never changed ramps/guides on an M96, I felt reaching out to others for clarification and assistance in parts shopping, would be the best course of action.
Thanks for the clarification and thanks to those concerned for me on this endeavor.
I will be using a lift and dropping the entire drivetrain.
Other
while I'm in there
's will be: clutch, PP and flywheel, I was considering plug tubes/tube seals, probably addressing the 1 or 3 of my coils that have small cracking, and Im going to tear open my starter and see if cleaning and re-greasing it corrects the starter hanging. AOS the PO did just prior to my purchasing. I will remove and inspect it regardless. Replace if necessary.
The work involved doesn't intimate in the least. What does have me concerned and confused is what parts exactly are needed and what aren't. As I stated previously; I've searched through pages and pages of thread after thread related to this topic and it somethinggets lost on translation, I think. Even having taken notes; literally every other thread contradicts and offers different parts the one previous and the one next to that. Im just looking for a clear concise amalgamation, so I can get the ball rolling, and not waste time or resources. Im going to pass on the $600 DVD set, although I'm sure there's some great info in there! (There better be for that kind of bread!)
I've downloaded a couple service manuals, but I was planning to purchase a physical manual, to keep at my disposal.
Im in Carroll County, MD if we were closer I would say I could give you a hand.
Attached is the PET parts catalog. It should help you out on finding what parts go where.
Once you have an updated list from PET and De Jeeper's post history, get back to us and well let you know if there is anything else you need.
In terms of silicone sealant, you have a few options; Porche spec is Loctite 5900. I personally like Drei Bond better...
This might not be complete but here we go:
I will reference the page number and part ID number in PET so you can see what part it is. This is only my recommendation take it with a grain of salt

While the engine is down
Ultimate AOS (look this up on this forum)
Coils / plugs
Injectors
Any plastic tubes/ vacuum lines / vacuum canister
oil filler neck are prone to cracking (get the O ring also)
Rear Main seal / IMS seal
Oil cooler & seals (slightly overkill)
Coolant expansion tank (pain in the *** without lowering / dropping engine)
When was your water pump / thermostat last replaced?
Anything else seeping / leaking oil on the engine?
Replace any bolt that is "torque to yield" ex: flywheel bolts
A coolant vacuum bleeder makes filling the cooling system dummy proof
You will need Pentosin power steering fluid - CHF202
Great suggestions! Thanks for the time and effort you've put into this post! I had in the back of my mind to address obvious broken or leaking parts. Im hopeful that there won't be too many of those though. *fingers crossed*
Check out FCPEuro for parts. Ive found that they are a little cheaper than Pelican. If you sign up for a account, put a few items in your cart then wait a few days, they usually throw out a 5% off coupon.
In that case I don't recommend you go past the removal of the valve covers. I don't think you have the experience to do this. You can check and change most of the timing chain plastics when the valve covers are off. A few of us here have split the case on our engines and putting it back is not a fun procedure. Right now you have a working engine so do everything you can do keep it that way and don't make into a expensive lawn ornament.
