So I went to get my car smog today after putting about 450 miles on my new motor. They said the OBD scanner said one of the monitors had not set yet. So I took the car out and drove it for 15 minutes at freeway speeds below 3000 RPMs. I came home and use my Icarsoft POR2 monitor and ran the readiness test for admissions. 8 of the ten monitors sais "OK, but here were two items that came back as "N/A" They were �Heated Catalyst Monitor� and �EGR and/or VVT system monitor�. I dont believe we have heated catalysts, do we? If so, it seems the 'not applicable' reading makes sense. Regarding the EGR VVT system? Do you think �N/A� is just the readers way of saying the monitor is not set yet, or do you think it would indicate the EGR valve is bad. OR, do we not have this monitor on our cars. Car is a 2002 C4S. NOTE: there is no CEL and no codes.

The "Heated Catalyst" is the upstream O2 sensor heaters and the "EGR VVT" system is probably NA since we do not have an EGR system on the 996's. The cat readiness monitor is performed during vehicle start-up / initial warm-up. This is the procedure for the 993 but will work for a 996: DO NOT EXCEED 60 MPH!! Start engine, let idle for approx. 2 min, 10 secs. Accelerate to 20-30 MPH, Maintain steady speed for approx 3 min, 15 secs. Accelerate to 40-60 MPH, Maintain steady speed for approx 15 mins. Decelerate and come to a stop. Then: Idle in Neutral for 5 mins. (manual trans.) Idle in Drive for 5 mins. (Tiptronic trans.) During the drive cycle, do not exceed 3,000 rpm or 60 mph. Try that and see if the monitors set. Edit: Also make sure your car is DEAD COLD. Let it sit overnight before performing the drive cycles.
