As I recall when I took my old key apart to change the battery I could see and remove the pill, which looked like a very small medicine pill.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

When purchased the car, I received a second key (plain key, no remote functions). Tried starting the car with it the first time yesterday. Turns, but does not crank. I understand this has to do with the chip in the key. Seller got the key from dealer in January of 2020. That dealer is 7 hours away from me. Anyone know if the key can be fixed by sending them the key or does the car have to be with it?
As I understand it the car has to be programmed to accept the key. So you can't mail the key. When you say it turns do you mean in the ignition switch? Did you check to see if there is a "pill" inside the key? If not that is a problem. Another problem if there is a pill in there, as I understand it you have to have the bar code number that comes attached to the key when new or no program possible. Maybe it was used just for unlocking the door.
It turns the ignition. From the pic, unless the "pill" is encased in the plastic, I guess it just unlocks the door. What the ?#*! is the purpose of that?
I've read a new key (with the programmed pill) is really expensive. If I ever lose this key, is there any added expense (except not having a running car and towing it to the dealer) to get a new key. I guess it's good that I have a spare cut to fit the mechanical tumblers.
It seems the only way to get a key that remote unlocks the doors and can start the engine is from a Porsche dealer at about $500. As I recall when I took my old key apart to change the battery I could see and remove the pill, which looked like a very small medicine pill.
There is a thread here somewhere where the pill is glued to inside lock so both keys will work.
When I bought my car in 2018, I had the dealer include a second key. Had to be programmed.
I do not get why people question this. All modern makes and models of cars are like this for security purposes. For at least the last 15 years it has not been like "hey, I got a mechanical cut key for my car and it doesn't work". The key - laser cut blade, RFID pill registered with the immobilizer, remote circuit board programmed to the car for opening and closing. In order for a key fob to work (1) the laser cut key must be cut to work the mechanical lock cylinders (2) the RFID passive security pill must be programmed into the immobilizer (3) the remote must be programmed into the car.
New keys must come with a tag that has the key code to program into the immobilizer, and only a Porsche dealer can do it. Replacement keys can be ordered through a Porsche dealer using your VIN and they can only get them by contacting Stuttgart directly. This is all for security purposes and so your car isn't stolen. Why do you even question this?
Our Mini Cooper is the same way. You can only get additional or replacement keys through a dealer with proof of ownership, VIN, and they order them from Mini directly. Cost is upwards of $400. Welcome to the new world!
Nope no pill. You can buy complete keys(minus the blade) from other sources that are much cheaper than from a dealer. Be careful with FleaBay offerings though. Check some of the bigger Porsche parts suppliers. Then you have to take the car to the dealer to program. I've read varying cost to get that done. I will find out myself this Spring as I've got a replacement and need to get it programmed in.
Yup, all modern cars have expensive keys. Some cars allow you to self program keys if you have both working keys in your possession. When I go my jeep wrangler, I ordered 2 fleabay keys. Had them cut at home depot and was able to program them following a defined sequence. I keep a spare key at the cottage out of fear that I lose a key while I'm there and can't drive home.
To be clear, I was not questioning having keys with a security system. I'm sure it keeps the comprehensive coverage lower. I was questioning why the prior owner would spend $200 to get a key from a dealer that only opens the door.
I can see a lot of practical reasons to have just a mechanical key. If the car is stored for long periods, the mechanical key is the only way to get into the car. Always good to have a mechanical backup key, even if it won't start the car.
For whatever reason, this is how my car came as well. Two keys, only one starts it and the other will unlock/lock, turn to accessory but won't start. I actually just opened it for the first time since I've owned it and it does have a pill in it.

Lost a key to our Chevy Cruze a couple years ago. Bought a blank replacement online (maybe $15), had it cut at a Chevy dealer (for free), then the car took care of programming the new key, since we still had an old original.
The entire "must get key from dealer for $hundreds" scheme is nothing but gouging.
