The first thing that came was a check engine and after checking code it seemed the MAF and as a first step cleaned it and the code did not return.

My car was an aerokit car and had a newer engine in it (with 74,000 less miles than the chassis) that had recently been installed with new clutch, IMSB, RMS, plugs, plug tubes, etc.

As the AOS was defective the suction was very strong and held back any leak.It is only a drop after parking and as I am storing the car for six months I will get it done then.At the same time I will have the IMS checked as the previous owner said it was changed but without the paperwork on that one I want to be sure.It has 128,000 miles but $5000 was put on the car for maintenance. It has new Bilstein shocks.

With an inexpensive 996 (or any other enthusiast car), you simply don't go through and spend $5,000 to repair stuff that ain't broke just because it might break and there's no receipt to prove it was already done.

Thanks for all the replies and opinions.I know some of you don't like the trip but I had it on my Boxster and I did not mind not clutching.Once in manual it is fun.I have driven stick shift a good part of my life and now I appreciate the trip. The purist are allowed their opinion.Yes my car has a few issues but generally is a fun strong car that still turns heads.Yes I want it perfect but with the mileage I will make it as mint as I can and enjoy doing it.For the price and a bit of money it should give me lots of pleasure. For those that are afraid of mileage in a german car should look at the amount of them on the road that run strong .Good maintenance should give you a reliable car.

when buying a well used 996 C2, anything with 130K-140K miles should be dirt cheap (market price in the $11-$12K range) prior to making the deal, i would have insisted the seller split the cost of IMS because there was no paperwork - then you could have changed out the AOS and RMS when having the IMS done for an extra couple of hundred dollars.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all
I purchased a 2000 996 trip a month ago and love the car. Price pleasure hard to beat. This is my third Porsche as I had a 914 and a Boxster previously. I knew I would have things to do to make it perfect .I had a PPi done that came back OK.But sometimes with mechanical things you just can't predict the future. The first thing that came was a check engine and after checking code it seemed the MAF and as a first step cleaned it and the code did not return. The second more labor intensive was a coolant leak from the front of the engine bay.My indie shop concluded that the AOS was cracked and had to be changed. I was quoted $1200 and had the work done. After getting the car an oil leak was noticed and I brought the car back and the RMS sprung a leak. It runs smooth and straight with the engine strong through the RPM range.I feel confident that once the limportant work is done it will be a reliable car.It will not be a DD so I will not put to much mileage on it. I just had another check light error code p1118 and I believe it's the O2 sensors. They were changed at 61,000 miles so is that normal once again at this mileage .Sorry for the long .Thanks
Five things wrong with it within a month of buying the car? UUUUm ...Six if you count that it is a triptronic. You say "It has 128,000 miles but $5000 was put on the car for maintenance." Did you get receipts or other proof of when the work was done? I hope you picked this car up for under ten grand as you will need another $5000 on PM to get it up to scratch. Buying a cheap 996 can become very expensive in quick time if you are not a DIY guy.
Looks nice, agreed if the purchase price was cheap enough than these wear items shouldn't break the bank.
I would start to learn as much about the car as possible so you can do some of your own service and save some money.
All these 996 threads about service costs remind me of a book that came out a while back called the gold plated Porsche. Also a long running article in Excellence about a writer buying a mid year 3.2 Carrera for 9K on ebay and the path he took to get it serviced and on par with 20K cars. The morale of both stories was that there are no cheap Porsches. The best part of the PPI should be some candid advice.
If you love this car than don't let the service bother you. They can be costly to maintain in comparison to most cars one would consider a daily, but when compared to a car of its era and genre they are cheap. The enjoyment of ownership should far exceed any bad feelings about the cost or need for service.
Enjoy it and drive it often. Best of luck
Thank for the reply. I don't mind spending some money on it at the present time as most of what is being done was already on my list and i do some of the work myself. If it cost 3 or 4 K to get it right that's Ok because I love the car and I bought it with that in mind at a good price. I read quite a lot about the 996 before and knew what I was getting. It is still a cheap toy for what you get even after the maintenance expense.

IMS/RMS/AOS is approx $2000 total for parts/labor (assuming no clutch is needed as you purchased a tip)- 1/2 of that would have been approx $1000 in addition to purchase price which isn't much of a hit on top of a market priced high mileage example.
now you will have $3-$4000 in repairs on top of the purchase price - this gets you into the price range of a nice low mileage example with service records/etc.
always best to walk real slow into a 996 purchase
You know, having just sold a high mileage '99 996, there does come a point where you stop deducting for "what ifs". My car was an aerokit car and had a newer engine in it (with 74,000 less miles than the chassis) that had recently been installed with new clutch, IMSB, RMS, plugs, plug tubes, etc. The first time the buyer of mine approached me about it (May of 2014), he had gone to a mechanic who told him that my car was worth about $11,000. I just laughed. I never put the car up for sale - he saw it in the auto museum parking lot and approached me. Then, a lowball offer based on some mechanic's opinion who had never even laid eyes on the car just made me shake my head. You can rationalize down the price of a 996 to a point where the seller should be paying you to take it off his hands, but that doesn't lead to a successful purchase transaction very often. The buyer came back in March 2015 and bought it at a reasonable price.
A beautiful 996 in very good condition that runs great - you're not gonna find someone to sell it for $11,000 then deduct $1,400 for RMS/IMSB/AOS and then more because it's a tip, and then more because the brake pads are getting thin and then more because the air conditioning needs a recharge, etc. etc. I don't think there are sellers out there willing to sell a nice looking 996 in good running condition for $8,000.
At $11,000 or $12,000, a car like lahalte just bought is priced appropriately for what he got. With an inexpensive 996 (or any other enthusiast car), you simply don't go through and spend $5,000 to repair stuff that ain't broke just because it might break and there's no receipt to prove it was already done.
If a guy buys an $11,000 car, then drive the damn thing until something breaks. Then fix it. If it is something super expensive to fix, then you sell the carcass and move on. In the meantime, you live with a small oil leak, or a creak in the suspension, or a rock chip on the front bumper. It's very liberating not to be a slave to perfection.
+996. Bottom line, this isn't a new car and any price below $20k is a very good value for what you're getting considering the cost for when it was new and considering these cars are still very relevant and competitive in terms of performance IMO.
With that said, I managed to get $5k off my purchase price because I pointed out to the previous owner that the car didn't have the required N rated tires on there and that the coolant color wasn't the standard OEM Porsche coolant in the tank along with the black coolant cap.
Man, I thought our 993 Forum was tough... The OP is posting his new pride and joy - a beautiful high mileage example. New bilsteins, engine pulls strong, and it looks great. Sure it needs a little work, but that's no reason to rain on the parade or tell the OP what he should have paid. And if the OP wants a tip that's his prerogative. Beautiful car - hope you enjoy it, and enjoy getting to know it!

If you think your car should not go over 100,000 miles you don't have much confidence in todays technology with cars going way beyond that.Life is a gamble so lets enjoy it.
I think the official name for that color is Basalt Black Metallic. I've seen a couple of them in person, and that color is beautiful. It is a very rich, deep color that ages well. You don't see a lot of 996s in that color. That car's a keeper- enjoy!!
