Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have been doing a little research preparing for new tires... and in general I see that folks love their Michelin Super Sports and have seen both positive and negative reviews on the Pirelli P Zero... and a couple years ago Consumer Reports agreed... but a recent review now has P Zero as their top rated Ultra High Performance Summer Tire! What changed? Anybody know if this is some new formulation? Tread pattern looks to be unchanged from images I noted taken in 2011 or so...

POST 2Original post

I generally associate CSR reviews for your avg folks that need an avg balanced performance in anything they review. The hardcore enthusiasts has a different set of criterias/priorities that don't necessarily align with CSR ratings nor their limited amount of test subjects/models. In this case, I'd care more about what Tire Rack would say as it holds more weight for me personally.

POST 3Original post

I agree with what Alpine posted about the conseravative mindset of Consumer Reports. If we could see the review posted that would help! I wonder how many miles they tested the tires for. Most tires are good when new, but many brands you can't wait for them to wear out so you can buy something else.

POST 4Original post

I've always felt that the P Zero performed well. It provides excellent grip and traction. My issue with it is that it has horrendous tread life (even for an ultra high performance summer tire) and it gets very noisy as it wears. I don't plan to buy another set, although they were the OE rubber on my wife's Audi SQ5 when we ordered it, so I have a set in my garage right now! The Michelin PSS sounds like a great tire, but I've never tried a set. It has a harder tread compound from what I understand to improve tread life, but that will obviously give up a little bit in terms of grip to a softer tire like the Pirelli P Zero. Personally, I prefer the Pilot Sport PS2 over any tire that I've had on my 911s.

I agree with the above except adding in the new condition. The CSR report is flawed in this case as they do not do a long term review on it, or else it may have a different outcome. I used to have the older set and after about 6k miles, ended up selling them.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the good feedback. Here is the Consumer Reports top half of "Ultra High Performance Summer Tires"... you can see they ranked P Zero and PSS at the top... it makes sense that you say the test if flawed because there is no long term rating on them. Unfortunately, it looks like they don't make PSS in my rear tire size (295/30) so it looks like my choices are either P Zero for $1000 installed or PS2s for $1500 installed. Pretty big difference. Is it worth it? I'm guessing neither tire will last for much more than 10K... so if I'm replacing them once every year or year and a half, it would add up if I was getting PS2s each time...

POST 8Original post

A new set of P Zero's were on my 996 when I bought it and I was biased to not like them as much as the Michelin's (which have been on everything else I've owned). To be honest, I'm 5k miles in and I kind of like them, but then I was already prepared to swap tires out at 10k. If the front still looks good (and they still look brand new), I may just replaced the rears and push out my decision another year. R

POST 9Original post

From reading the results chart it appears the Michelin SS is the clear winner & maybe the most economical given potential tread life.

POST 10Original post

Agreed, and their survey results definitely are more consistent with my personal experience.

POST 11Original post

You might want to consider the Bridgestone Potenza RE-11A. Since they don't appear to make the low-profile sizes in 18" for the PSS any more, I think I will be changing to the RE-11A once my current Hankooks are worn. They are in a different class (extreme performance) but according to another recent thread on this forum, the tread life isn't terrible and they are very sticky.
