It came back clean mechanically and had solid service records as well as having the IMS changed along with a new clutch around 42k.

The rumble when I crack the engine on a cool California morning...driving slowly as the engine warms up...then letting it have its head and start to run...letting my feet dance on the pedals as I move up and down the gears...cruising the city streets on a rainy night...welcome to you new love affair.

I also have a local track I want to run but it has a sound restriction of 94db.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello all. Been lurking awhile and thought I might as well come out of the shadows.
I was one of those kids who grew up dreaming of someday driving a 911. My ultimate car was always a TT AWD 911. Well, that and the 928 S4. In the small town in Iowa where I am from, there was a red 928 that sat in a garage. I noticed it while riding my bike through the alley and the garage door was up. I would ride to that guys house and look through his garage windows on a regular basis. My mother raised me right so I actually asked permission. He even let me sit in it once. As a teenager, I used to talk about how some day I would own a pre-emission 928 because it wouldn't have cats and would be faster and I would race it on a track and it would be amazing. I would dream of Boxer engines and turbos and AWD and fine leather... You heard this one before, haven't you?
Well, the closest I could get was the Subaru Impreza. We had a long 16 year relationship that has been great. My 2005 STi that I have been driving for the past 10 years had seen its fair amount of flogging at the track between my brother in law and I . It was sitting at 172k and I started contemplating a new built block and blah blah blah. The suspension was already done up but the powerplant was tired. I just couldn't justify it but as I looked for a replacement, I couldn't find anything that I wanted. Literally, nothing. Out of sheer frustration, I did a search for Porsche 911. Holy sports car Batman, I can actually afford a 911 and not have a car payment? Time to convince the wifey.
Surprisingly, the wife was absolutely fine with it. It was financially within our means and she has never denied my pleasures so I began the hunt.
After doing my research I pulled the trigger on a 2001 6-speed C2 Coupe with 50115 miles. I am the 3rd owner as it went from Cali to Nevada to me in AZ. It came back clean mechanically and had solid service records as well as having the IMS changed along with a new clutch around 42k. I was able to get them to $18,800 and moved my STi for $11,600. The wife covered the rest as an early birthday gift.
After giving it a 1 week shakedown, I took it into some local canyons. Nothing crazy. Just cruising with some little blurps of speed. I had the greatest drive of my entire life. I thought my STI drove well but after this, it was like driving a brick. Don't get me wrong, my STi very well might have taken this around the track in it's prime but it was never this enjoyable. Just doing the speed limit through the twisties is amazing in the 911. I didn't have to fight it to get it to do what it seemed to want to do naturally. After that drive, I kicked myself for having not realized this dream sooner. I don't have to describe it to you guys. That's why you are all here as well. There really is no substitute.
Well, I have carried on long enough. Sorry for the long winded post. Just happy to finally be here. I have about 1200 more pages of the 996 portion of the forum to catch up on anyway. So, be seeing you around and enjoying the ride. Hopefully the pics show up.
Congrats. Enjoy!
A friendly warning: as much fun as you're having with it now, it's going to get better and deeper with time. I've had some really fun cars before, including '70 and '84 911s, but the 996 wrings satisfying grins out of every kind of pavement, like nothing else I've driven. Here's wishing you superb gas Smileage.
Not very much drama when pushing these 996's is there?! Sweet rides.
Yours looks like a well taken care of example.
I know you will enjoy all of the moments spent in it.
Whats' not to like?!
Nothing nicer looking than a stock 996. Yours is very nice...don't rush out to mod it, let its understated design and performance reveal itself to you. Just going to the dry cleaners to pick up a jacket is a pleasure in this car. The rumble when I crack the engine on a cool California morning...driving slowly as the engine warms up...then letting it have its head and start to run...letting my feet dance on the pedals as I move up and down the gears...cruising the city streets on a rainy night...welcome to you new love affair.
Well said!
I've had mine a bit over a year, and I still get the biggest smirk on my face as I walk upto it.
Congratulations OP
welcome to your new addiction.
Well you've doone it now....you'll never be without a Porsche now....when you don't have one....you'll be 'between Porsches at the momenet' when people ask.
Thanks everyone. The wife is definitely a keeper. She has already said I should get a turbo in a few years. 😃
One of the appeals of this car for me is that I don't feel the need to mod it. It is amazing how it is and I always seem to mod myself right out of vehicles. I take them to a point that they just become a pain and I no longer enjoy them. I do want to add the aux plug to the cdr 220 but that's about it. My resources are going into keeping this a perfectly running thing of beauty.
I would also say that the addiction was full on from the first test drive. It was very hard to not show my emotion to the seller. From the moment I sat in the driver seat and she gave me her warm embrace, I knew I would never be satisfied with anything else.
Very nice very clean example! There are some small subtle things that don't look after market that you can do to make the experience that much more visceral. The first would be taking the mufflers off and getting fisterD mufflers. It cost me $450 installed for genuine brand new FisterD mufflers and it makes the car sound like it should've from the factory. For me it's not about how fast I'm going, necessarily, it's about the sensation of the speed. Just like you said about doing the limit through the twisters being exhilarating. The noise will make the experience that much better!
I really am against modding cars. And when I got my 996.2 10,000 (DD for me) miles ago I swore tut I would never do anything to it. BUT the honeymoon does end, and I started to pick up on minute things I wanted to change. I wouldn't really consider them mods, just updates or improvements. As I said the FisterD is really a must, then for me it's a T96 steering wheel (first 996 I ever drove had this and it really transforms the driving experience). Then it's a numeric racing shifter (best in the business). Possibly a two inch console riser and that should be it. Otherwise I love things STOCK and all of my changes either are stock or have the identical visual appearance
Good luck you are going to fall in love all over again!
Nice car, have the same color but a 99 with 72k on it. Similar dream but did get the 928S4 first so I can enjoy the best of both that Porsche has to offer! The 996 is a fun car, quick and responsive and the 6 speed makes it all the more so while the 928 is a superb grand tourer, super stable with great throttle response at highway speeds. Enjoy the ride!
It won't be hard to spot me, I will be the guy with a Packers hat and ear to ear smile.
As for mods, the T96 looks very nice. I might have to look into that. As for the fister, it sounds great but I think could be too loud. I have been driving around with a 3" exhaust on my STi that hit 96db from 50 feet. I was happy to have it quiet for once. I also have a local track I want to run but it has a sound restriction of 94db. It is hard to gauge the sound through video but if it was under 94db, I might consider it. I would have to here it in person before I bit the bullet.
Really, at this point, I am just enjoying the car. I like the simple, minimalist looks and mechanical sounds of it. Someday I may add a few little items but I just haven't found anything that screams fix me at this point. Not that there isn't anything that could be improved, I just haven't had time to wipe the grin from my face long enough to think about the cars potential improvements.
Someday my friend, someday. I see 928's available and will pick one up at some point. I actually would love to restore one. Once we find our new house, and I have the extra garage space, I just might do it. The Porsche bug has bitten me hard now so I see nothing but great things ahead. My boys are actually quite smitten with it now as well so it would make a great bonding project for us.
Funny you should mention that. Mine came with pretty much every mod I would want to do (including some I wouldn't have from a $ perspective) so I find myself in the odd position of owning and driving a car I am perfectly happy with. Every time I consider new mods I reach the same conclusion that it is quite simply unnecessary.
