Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Leading evidence: 'Use dr' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean with bug spray' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

If you do use insect repellent on your car, you should also wash your car with Vinegar as well.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I bought the 3m restore kit, worked great. Included sanding disks (various grits) buffer pad, compound for buffing and uv protectant. 33 bucks and worked very well. All you need is a power drill to sand/buff. Tried it on my wife's dads car and results were great.
The deet in insect repellent "works" as a headlight restorer by essentially melting the plastic and dissolving any varnish/clear coat on the lenses. It's a solvent, so it can dissolve lots of stuff:
"DEET is an effective solvent,[4] and may dissolve some plastics, rayon, spandex, other synthetic fabrics, and painted or varnished surfaces including nail polish."
(DEET. (2015, April 6). In Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia. Retrieved 15:31, April 10, 2015, from

)
Since there's no guarantee this won't just turn your headlights into a melty mess - and ruin any paint it touches - I'll stick to the polishing kits.
I don't need anything as mine are clear. Just saying that's all. There's a couple of small scrapes on the paint work that I may try insect repellent on. It may smooth them out if it is so strong haha.
Insect Repellent should only be used on Insects. The ONLY time this should even be remotely considered is if you live in a 3rd world country where you don't have options to get anything else due to store availability and no internet deliveries(such as in the middle of the outback, but then you have other issues...).
If you do use insect repellent on your car, you should also wash your car with Vinegar as well. Just sayin...
I don't get the "haha" here. What's so funny?
Maybe you should spend the DEET money on performance driving school so you don't wipe out in the snow again...haha.
OK get your dig in **** house. Have you spent yours on Performance Driving School? Mine was in snow on normal tires not snow tires. No excuses for my driving as I am an advanced driver and have been since 1965. That by the way was my first and only bump in 50 years. That fact speaks for itself. Have a go at me when you have driven half the miles I have. Just saying.
I dont see how DEET could melt plastic if you can spray it onto your skin as your link says.
I hear a bit of deet in your 996 oil is good for your... you know.
And Hurdi, a simple google or wikipedia search will tell you more about the well known 'plastic melting' solvency of deet formula's as well as it's human exposure safety.
Bottom line, it's less likely to harm you than malaria, dengue fever, encephalitis, etc. but far from completely 'safe' for humans, and it will definitely trash your plastics.
Yes.
If your skin was made of plastic, using it as a topical insect repellent including DEET would be f***ing stupid. Since your skin is NOT made of plastic, it doesn't dissolve when you apply solvent to it. Hope that clears things up for you.
I used Dr. Headlight to refinish my 996 lights. It worked very well.
Years ago, my sons and I were driving to Indianapolis to watch the Formula 1 race. I sprayed bug repellent with deet on all of us prior to departure so we would be ready. When we arrived, I noticed some sort of black residue on my right leg as I got out of the car. I looked back in the car and there was an indentation and missing plastic on the center console where my leg had been touching the plastic. Deet is nasty stuff.
I think the key with any of the headlight refinish kits is to put UV sealant on after you clean them up, or they will re-yelllow pretty quickly... Fortunately I've never had to clean up the lights on any of my Porsche's, but this has been my experience on several other vehicles.
