For IMSB, the more effective way (short of changing the bearing) is to use the IMS Guardian (a metal chip detector).

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

31 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

2 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The water pump failed on my 2001 convertible and I fixed it. I've been checking the oil filter regularly for more signs of trouble. But I decided to get a Used Oil Analysis from Blackstone to quell my fear. And it worked! I got this great report telling me all is OK. Hope they're right. I really like that when I called Blackstone to check on progress they picked up the phone!

POST 2Original post

You may want to remove the personal info on the report A UOA is good for monitoring the oil condition and bearing wear (e.g., rod bearings, main bearings) but it may not be good to monitor IMSB as it can't detect larger debris that's shed by the IMSB during failure. For IMSB, the more effective way (short of changing the bearing) is to use the IMS Guardian (a metal chip detector). It may also guard your engine against other failures such as partially broken timing chains.

POST 3Original post

The best way to do samples, if you're concerned, is to pull one a few times a year. From what I was told (and maybe my engine builder was wrong) is they were best to identify trends rather than just a snapshot. He also said they work best if/when you have concerns about the engine and wear, which would fit well into our engines and our higher mile cars.

POST 4Original post

The best way is NOT read anything on the internet or anywhere for that matter on the M96. I know people that don't want to know and they have a very happy life. The other way is to learn to fix it yourself.

POST 5Original post

I beat the crap out of my 996. I do. I drive it HARD. I DARE, DOUBLE DARE, this car to blow up on me. 117k miles later and the car just keeps on laughing.

POST 6Original post

Just to reinforce your paranoia, an oil sample will do nothing to let you know if your timing chain is going to break or not. It may break all of a sudden for no reason.

POST 8Original post

Keep up with the maintenance and drive it. If the enjoyment you get from the car is overshadowed by the paranoia you feel, you should probably sell it and by a more pedestrian car.

POST 9Original post

The ONLY way to absolve yourself of any worry involves a Camry. If you're not willing to go that route, do your maintenance and drive your car.

POST 10Original post

What? issues with the M96 motor? first I heard of it!

POST 13Original post

Back when I got my first Porsche...a 964 RS America...I knew nothing about design issues. In fact I was under the impression that Porsches were absolutely bullet proof and so I drove my Porsche and my later 993, as if they were. Nothing ever broke. I serviced them by the book and a little sooner if I was going to track it. And they just didn't break. Fifteen years later, I heard rumors about something in the newer Porsches but I didn't pay attention and I jumped on a 2003 996 about the same time I also discovered Rennlist. Little by little a broader picture developed. My earlier fantasies of Porsche's being flaw free were wrong...and the phobia about the newer models was just as distorted. A million things can break on any car. A Porsche is engineered to accept more stress than a Camry. The price of the pleasure is that when/if something breaks it will cost a lot of money. But worrying and waiting for your Porsche to break is like expecting infidelity in your marriage. And obsessing on it will ruin the marriage. The answer? Have sex with your Porsche often and don't worry about your wife catching you.

This. More time driving, less time on the internet.

POST 16Original post

not worth the stress to worry about....like the above comments just drive it hard. Mine made it to 172k all original no issues then it got totalled....by HAIL

POST 18Original post

Yes! Finally, somebody mentioned the sun visors. What's with these things? Could they be any narrower? I drive west in the PM and eastward in the AM. Believe me, those "visors" are next to useless. They cover maybe an inch-and-a-half of the windshield. And that's if the seat is raised 'til your head hits the headliner. Definitely a design flaw. Can we get a class action on this? Impossibly Minor Sun Blockage (IMSB). Anybody else plagued with this issue? My car is way out-of-warranty, so I guess I'll have to continue wedging a big piece of cardboard under the vanity mirror cover, even if POA loses. On a car that was over $70K new? Pretty tacky, IMHO.

POST 19Original post

Quotes source post: 12196234

Your is only an inch and a half?? Yowza!!! Measured mine and it's more like nine inches.

POST 20Original post

Oh, great. As if the regular paranoia isn't enough, now I have visor envy. Ugh!

POST 21Original post

911 engine paranoia? Luckily, i have a 996; ive been told its not a "real" 911, so i guess i dont have to worry....😀

POST 22Original post

Quotes source post: 12196335

So, let me get this straight, 'cause I got a 997.2 I got a bigger unit (AKA visor)! Man, I can't wait to lord it up at our next PCA event. Any inadequacies re 991s?!? T p.s. This is one funny dang thread.

POST 23Original post

Quotes source post: 12196234

Simple fix, take it off and go to the local junk yard and find one form a different car that fits.

POST 24Original post

That's why I generally only come here to check on the status of Pete's car and for the IHI thread on OT. TC

POST 25Original post

Quotes source post: 12196261

Well, when she tells you *that* is easily seven inches I am sure that you now think the visor is nine.

POST 26Original post

Blackstone hires good writers... The unicorns and rainbows in that summary were priceless. But without a TBN or TAN data point the oil can't be thoroughly observed. Has anyone EVER seen a Blackstone analysis that was "bad"? I don't believe that I have. If you want results without all the extra fluff, with TBN and TAN values as standard, use ALS or a local Caterpillar dealer. Caterpillar is my favorite.

POST 27Original post

Quotes source post: 12198782

I often wonder if they even type out the responses or if they have pre canned responses to pick from. Maybe the "lab techs" throw a dart to see which message to select?

POST 28Original post

Quotes source post: 12194878

Yea, I had the same philosophy. Now paying $15K for a replacement engine after it blew up on me. It can happen. I did all the right things - IMSB upgrade with LN Engineering, oil changes every 5000 kilometers. I am not laughing anymore. Hope you get away easier.

POST 29Original post

Quotes source post: 12198782

Jake, What or who is ALS? I do a search and I get a bunch of stuff that seems unrelated. I've actually tried to do a search before based on your recommendation and came up with the same thing before. Also, On the Blackstone analysis, is it the comments or you just don't trust their results of a UOA? Couldn't we just ignore the comments if the results are correct and if we knew what to look for? Mike

POST 31Original post

Blackstone is the Walmart of UOA. If you are fine with that and not getting the TAN or TBN values unless you pay more for them, then they are fine. The comments annoy me, I have seen results where the anti wear package was trashed and their comments didn't mention it..
